So everyone wants the big N to have a new IP that no one will buy because people say a bunch of stuff then comes low sales. I personally think they should do what makes them money and if the want something fresh take another crack at one of their sleeping IPs. Anyway, if they were to make a new "rated M" type mature IP what would it be like.
IF they were to do this, and I don't think they will, I would like to see a very Japanese styled game. Maybe it's just my dissatisfaction with Capcom and Koonami as of late, but it would nice to have maybe a very Japanese styled game in terms of art, music, gameplay, etc. that played off of humor. Maybe like cutely drawn chibi adult characters dealing with mature themes. Add some story that maybe touch upon some philosophy, so it wouldn't just be totally silly. What genre? Honestly feel they could do anything here, but if I would choose at random RPG since I am more concerned with story/environment aspect since that would actually make it "mature". It doesn't need to be an RPG though. Something along those lines is what I would want and honestly what I think would suit Nintendo best in the imaginary world where they would do this. Other Japanese decs have tried to be western, it didn't end well.
So would you want/think Nintendo would do in this type of situation?
Most people seem to forget about this series when they talk about mature nintendo games...
When I say mature I mean "rated M". Also think more along the lines of humor and I have seen Fire Emblem Awakening, not all that super cute or chibi. Not talking bad about FE, I want to get Awakening once I beat Pokemon Y and SMTIV. Just different from what I am saying. I want something philosophical but more of a silly and modern tone, if that makes sense.
I understand what you're saying and fire emblem has it's charms, is cute and is very funny too mostly in the support conversations though.
The overall settings of the game are really far fetched and fantastical and yeah a bit silly at times
But a game doesn't have to be rated M to make it a mature game and it seems games that the ones that are rated M are only done so because they have swearing, sex and drugs in them. Nintendo would never make a game with any of that, so they will never have a rated M game, fire emblem is definitely the closest with all the apocalyptic themes and death and violence along with some fanservice and really Japanese games don't tend to go much further than that.
I guess what I'm trying to say is the game which you want already exists. It might not be a typical blockbuster AAA game that grabs all the media attention but it's still mature and not intended for children.
A Mature game and a "Rated M" game are two different things. Shooters don't need blood/gore to be fun. I wouldn't mind a more mature title from Nintendo but I don't think I would want a "rated M" game from Nintendo. Fire Emblem is a great example of a Mature game from Nintendo, Fire Emblem deals with some mature situations while not having mature content.
People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...
Being mature means to be boring though. We want a game where we grow up and get a job then marry and have kids, high octane action sequences include waking up in the morning, make breakfast for your family, drive the kids to school, go to work, go shopping, make dinner then go to bed... The only explosions come from your wifes mouth when it is that time of the month
Something like Katamari Damacy, but when you run over people, they get squished in pools of blood, with their remains going into the ball. The rainbows would still be there, of course. It'd be black humor of the most sadistic variety. Silly, but tackling mature themes in a way that feels fitting.
That sort of sounds like Nintendo, right?

I just want to say that I am in COMPLETE agreement with the idea of a mature game is not necessarily rated M. I feel Xenoblade, one of my all time favorites, deals with mature and smart themes perfectly. I said rated M because let's face it, the only point of a move like this would get the attention of a gaming audience that as of recent only gives GOTY to rated M titles. I have only one rated M game AT ALL, that's SMTIV. I don't care about ratings, I like games that are very fantasy and imaginary like Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, Castlevania, etc. this was simply a mind exercise to see that if a rated M game would even be all that possible to really be "Nintendo" in nature still.
The last time Nintendo tried something truly mature iirc was Advance Wars: Dark Conflict (or Days of Ruin). It was a post apocalyptic, anyone-can-die story with grey morality characters which dealt with human pragmatism and the notion of the greater good.
Unfortunately that got dropped halfway through in favour of a villain who spread war and disease for no other reason than because HE WAS EVIL AND EVIL IS COOL. All the grey morality stuff flew right out the window and the interesting discussions the story was raising before were hand waved. Somehow defeating Mr. Evil settled all the disputes the survivors had and the ending was happy despite the fact that most of humanity had died in nuclear fallout.
Also, a lot of fans disliked it because it gave up on continuity and created a whole new set of characters. Plus, the style was different and we all know how much people hate change.
All in all, thumbs up for trying, although it did show that mature really isn't Nintendo's forte.
always thought I'd change to Gyarados after I turned 20 but hey, this is more fitting I guess. (also somebody registered under the original Magikarp name and I can't get back to it anymore orz)

Man I'm mad as hell that game bombed becuase days of ruin is probably the best game in the Advance Wars series.

something like that advance wars game would be great. i hate how games are so polarized in the good vs evil thing. ya sure its always fun to be the hero and know you are always right, but there is nothing realistic about that (except for those that actually see the world like that...)
I prefer morally grey stories myself, but I don't mind a simple good versus evil especially for Nintendo games. I haven't played awakening yet so i'm not sure how that plays out.
If were being honest I don't think Nintendo needs to make Mature Games. I'd rather see them make E-T takes on other genre's, like how Lego city undercover is a family friendly take on the GTA franchise.
