I was going shopping today when I came across a Wii U demo unit at Argos, I checked it out and there were some big surprises. Below is the full list of content:
Mario Kart 8
Single Player and Multiplayer (100cc)
All characters unlocked
A reasonable amount of parts unlocked
8 tracks (Mario Kart Stadium, Water Park, Sweet Sweet Canyon, Mario Circuit, Toad Harbour, Sunshine Airport, Electrodrome, Cloudtop Cruise)
Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze
Single Player and Co-op
4 levels (1-1, 1-4, 1-Boss, 6-1) (1-4 is a minecart level so plenty of variety there)
Pikmin 3
Mission mode
5 collect treasure levels (don't really understand Pikmin 3 so can't really be more specific)
New Super Mario Bros. U
Single Player and Co-op
Acorn Plains world
Rayman Legends
Didn't try it out but assuming it's the same as the late 2012 demo.
Only game that really felt missing was Super Mario 3D World.
At the same time, the users who ask for these demos are usually those who are buying the game anyway. So if this is the case, what would Nintendo even gain?

People who otherwise wouldn't be. Not against buying a game I know I am going to like at full price. Don't think that is going to be the case with Pikmin 3 so I either get it where Nintendo gets basically nothing from the transaction or not at all.
Other People might think Tropical Freeze is going to be too hard for them from reviews. They then try 6-1 and realise it is actually going to be fine and get it straight away.

Freedom of the press is for those who happen to own one.
