I think one thing many people agree on is that Nintendo home consoles are among the best for local multiplayer experiences. This makes them the ideal systems for small group parties. Smash Bros, Mario Kart, Mario Party, Wii Sports, Just Dance, Goldeneye, etc.
So I find it a bit perplexing that Nintendo rarely every positions themselves in that sort of role. I think this is particularly true for the Wii U, which from my experience, completely curbstomps the PS4 and XB1 in terms of group multiplayer experiences. That's not to say they should shift all their advertising that way, but they should take greater advantage of it.
I know what you mean. But Nintendo are already pretty entrenched as number one in that field, I mean who is number two? They never advertise (or spend money) where they are already sound, it seems. A lot of those games you mentioned are still what many people think of with mulitplayer but yes perhaps now the time is right to remind everyone they're still going strong. That's why I'm wishing Nintendo come out with better bundles, not just for my friends and I but for them, so the every day people are more willing to buy a box that has a couple of controllers and games in it, these multiplayer games like Kart and Splatoon.
Mario Party makes the most sense to bundle in with a console and extra controller of some kind, what about a Smash bundle with something unique to make sure it really sells? Then bring on a Xenoblade bundle, they know the Wind Waker one sold like hotcakes!
Bundles should really be their thing to get the variety across, to emphasise that they do have all these options and all kinds of games.

Agreed. A cheap Wii U bundle with 2 party games like Smash and Splatoon or Mario Kart 8 and Smash could actually help sales.
The best way to capitalize on this is to stop limiting certain games, like Mario Party, to be strictly local and expand their online networking.
How exactly are they supposed to advertise this and make it sound like it's something good that they don't have online modes for certain games, or no voice chat? Who in their right mind would actually look at this as a positive and how is that supposed to increase sales?

Most people don't actually look that up beforehand and thus is a non-factor (though if that has backfired on Nintendo because people assumed it had online in a game, that wouldn't surprise me)

Voice Chat I feel like we covered in the Splatoon thread so I won't bring that up.
Online Multiplayer, I agree some games could benefit from it (possibly Nintendo Land) but Mario Party is not one of them, in my opinion. I agree Online Multiplayer should be in more of their games but when a game isn't fun playing it online compared to local multiplayer should they still put online multiplayer in? I think Mario Party is a game that is fantastic in a Local Multiplayer setting but would fall apart with Online Multiplayer. Some party games work online but I don't think Mario Party would.
People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...
If we're going on the "Nintendo games need online" bit again I guess I'll chime in. The way I see it when a game has an online mode I'll only ever care in two instances. If it's a competitive game that you could realistically turn it into an eSport? Then it needs it. So racing games, fighting games, shooters and even speedruns in platformers. And Nintendo has done those things. The second one is the one they've kinda dropped the ball a bit and it's with co-operative missions. This is where they've fallen short but... it's hard to think of which franchises would suit it. Metroid and Starfox spring to mind. Perhaps.
Really most of the time when I boot up a game and see the online mode? Unless it's something where that's the primary appeal? I'll usually just ignore it entirely. Play through the single player campaign and then move on. Or I think about games people begged for an online mode like Wii Sports. When we finally got it in Wii Sports Club? I don't know, I played it for a couple of days and then moved on. I still boot up that game sometimes but always for local-multiplayer.
So when people say "Mario Party needs online".... I don't think you really know what you want. Because I know I'll just ignore that mode entirely. But for something like Starfox? If online dog-fights aren't there for Starfox then I will be annoyed.

An opinion is only respectable if it can be defended. Respect people, not opinions

They shouldn't be advertising that there isn't online, they should be advertising that the Wii U is a system that is GREAT for parties. It's a fantastic way to hit older demographics like college students.
Currently Playing: Steamworld Heist, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, Tales of Graces F

O_O how is making mario party online going to change anything? this thread is discussing how Nintendo rule the roost in regards to multiplayer gaming, and how they should capitalise on this by reminding everybody. so how is making one of their best multiplayer games online going to help?!
Yeah party games being online doesn't make much sense to me. Go to your friends house, play with your family or whatever. The nice thing about them is they're quite accessible so even mum and dad can play and have a chance of doing well!
Nintendo have done these bundles in the past: my partner's white 8GB unit was bundled with Nintendo Land and Wii Party U. I thought Game & Wario would make a great pack-in game because it makes fabulous use of the Gamepad. There's also decent eShop originals that fit the bill: Spin the Bottle for example - hey why not have a system bundled with eShop originals pre-installed to promote the eShop?

Game & Wario was meant to be the original bundled game with the Wii U but as it got delayed it was changed it to Nintendo Land instead.
Ah that makes more sense now. Every time I played Game & Wario I wondered why it wasn't the pack-in: no extra controllers needed was the biggest problem with Nintendo Land for people who weren't upgrading from a Wii and had the accessories.

I find this a little hard to believe. Nintendo Land made some sense as a Wii Sports equivalent for the Wii U, Game and Wario is literally a spinoff of a spinoff of a spinoff of Mario. I find it hard to believe they would consider Wario a bigger console seller than a large chunk of their IPs combined.
That would be like if the Marvel Cinematic Universe started with a movie about the day to day life of a minor Iron Man villain.
