You did good with Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate. That's the game that got me into the series. Just keep in mind that game is not is newcomer friendly as the two more recent entries, so when you play just settle it in your mind that it's going to take a couple hours for the pace to pick up. But once it does.... oh boy. You were in for one of the greatest video games ever created. So stick with it and if you need a helping hand hunting online don't be afraid to tag me in a message.

Xenoblade isn't cheap but it's a must own. Same can be said for Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE. If you buy a GCU membership @BestBuy for $30, you'll get 20% off all new game purchases for 2 years. These 2 games alone would net a $24 savings, basically paying for the membership in and of themselves. Then you could just save money for the next two years on every single game you buy.

Pikmin 3 must own (Selects version only $19.99, $29.99 for non-Select version)

DKC Tropical Freeze must own (Selects version $19.99, $26 for non-Selects version)

Bayonetta 2
Wonderful 101
Rayman Legends
Sonic Racing Transformed (Mario Kart is excellent, this is as good and cheaper)
Yoshi's Wooly World (the Yoshi's Island sequel we've wanted for 20 years)

And it goes without saying that Super Mario 3D World, Mario Kart, Smash Bros and Splatoon are all must-owns. They won't be as cheap though so maybe prioritize them for last but you don't want to miss these games if you own a Wii U. That would almost be criminal.

Also, lots of good VC and indies. DO NOT PASS UP METROID PRIME TRILOGY FOR $19.99 on the eShop. Don't do it! This should be one of your absolute first digital purchases. If you insist on having a physical copy you can do that too- price has come down since Gamestop reprinted- the reprint is like $39.99 and the steelcase is maybe $50-100. I'd just go digital but if you have to do physical go for the $40 reprint.

And if you really wanna get the most out of your Wii U, you can mod it to play GameCube from SD card in HD with a Wii U Pro Controller. Takes 20-30 minutes and what's that saying? So easy a caveman could do it? Ya. And believe me it's every bit as awesome as it sounds. Of course you would have to take some personal responsibility and only put games on the SD that you actually own. But if you do own them then why not. Might as well play them in widescreen in HD with a modern wireless controller.

excellent replies. I've sinced picked up

Bayonetta 1&2 combo, used for around 44$ on Ebay in like new condition(no scratches at all). it does not technically go over budget, since its two games. two excellent games!

Wind Waker HD for 20$ like new (no scratches at all)

Out of the replies, I plan to get

DKC Tropical Freeze
Metroid Prime Trilogy
Splatoon
Zombie U
Super Mario 3D World
Yoshi Wooly World
Xenoblade

Thank you for the suggestions, a reminder - Hard copies only, or very small downloads. At the most, a flash drive is the most storage we can expand to with this budget. For 20$, I got a Kingston USB 3.0 32GB flash drive. Also, we're only talking about official, licensed products. No homebrew, or emulation of any sorts(even though the wii u natively supports gamecube games, the software locks it out). As much as I appreciate emulation, and I do use it occasionally, this is not the thread for that. thanks again and lets keep them coming!

Affordable Space Adventures
Runbow
Art of Balance
Skyward Sword
Human Resource Machine
U Host
Rayman Legends
OlliOlii
Fast Racing Neo

I know most of these are digital-only, but if you want to collect the best games for Wii U, it would be a crime to leave these out. All of those are pretty small, but even for the big games, you won't need more than one (big) flash drive.

And definitely get those from the "plan to get" list. You can't pass on unique games like Splatoon, Wooly World, XCX, Mario Galaxy or Mario Maker.

thanks for the reply! a few of these I now remember, thanks to you shani. i've always been interested in, but never learned more about:
Affordable Space Adventures
Skyward Sword, will be looking at both versions.
Rayman Legends

In my OP, i asked for hard copies only, or very small download size(500 mb-ish), because this is the affordable guide, which means we will assume you do not have several old hard drives laying around, ready to be used on your Wii U. we are acting as though 20$(again roughly) is our 'per item budget', which limits us to a nice quality 32 GB flash drive, a poor quality 64 GB, and many used options. so in the future, if you can check beforehand and include the download size, it would be extremely helpful.

However, the suggestions are pretty great from everyone, so i will be adding a 'user recommended' section, under the official one. thanks for the great ideas, now everyone can see them.

Side note; I participated in the splatfest thing recently, Nintendos free '6 hours over 3 days' promotion. I enjoyed it, and will look for a good deal on it, but shooters are definitely not my thing(anymore). it would be excellent local multiplayer i believe, which is why ill be grabbing it!

You may want to get Skyward Sword on disc, since it's a 4GB download on Wii U. I know that's more costly and kills your cost requirement, though.

indeed! same as metroid prime trilogy, which i just picked up the steelbook edition. i guess i should clarify, if it costs 60$ but comes with 3 FULL games, it counts, since each game is 20$ on average. i paid 49.99 on ebay for a never used, like new steelbook collector edition copy.

Captain Toad is super fun and I believe a Nintendo select now, so it should be $20 or less. I can't vouch for it (I don't own it), but I haven't seen Mario Maker anywhere on your lists yet. Star Fox Zero is getting cheap too, but I haven't played it either.

Most of the games that were X360/PS3 ports can be found for quite cheap.

So ME3, Assassins Creed 3 and 4, Deus Ex, Darksiders 2, Call of Duty BOPS3 and Ghost, Arkham City and Origins.

Also Legend of Kay more recently.

It's dangerous to go alone! Stay at home.

Every Nintendo Select, but you probably already know that. I'd advise looking on Amazon, as I've seen some games priced down on there.
