I figured it would be like Smash, you can see the DLC (and go up against people who use Ryu or Lucas, play on the stage), but you won't be able to use them yourself until you buy it.
This would make sense. You should be able to use the DLC if you want to create levels as tools and bosses, enemies and such. Other people should still be able to download those levels but not use those tools themselves for their own levels.
The only thing I don't like about how DLC worked in Mario Kart 8 is it literally splits players in three different categories and limits lobby and multiplayer interaction.... I hope it doesn't end up like that in future games.
@DefHalan: The levels won't show up on your stage select screen because you didn't buy them. They'll still be downloaded on the disc, though. So when playing online, if someone who has the DLC selects a DLC level you don't own, if the game chooses that level then you'll be playing on a level you didn't buy.
are you sure about that? Because in Mario Kart 8 you have to switch between DLC pack regions in the online VS mode, so the obvious assumption to me is you are switching between groups of people who bought the DLC tracks and didn't. Why would this exist if anyone online can play on the tracks?

I've actually never played MK8 online with randoms, I've only ever played with friends, so in the case of MK8 was talking about that.
If you add me, I need to at least know you or I won't add you back.
Ok, well yeah in Mario Kart 8 people who bought the DLC are locked into their own category, so online lobbies are split into groups between players who bought the first pack, second pack, and who bought both packs. You can switch between if you purchased the DLC and other players will be able to see you use DLC characters but they will not be allowed to play the DLC tracks unless they purchase them.
My point was, if Mario Maker makes DLC tools, I hope they make it to where players can still download stages with those tools (Boom-Boom, check points, Koopalings, etc) but just not use them in stages they created themselves. I don't know how Nintendo will go about it... assuming they are planning DLC at all.
For Mario Maker there's an easy way around it. If a level uses an item or theme from some DLC you haven't purchased then it simply doesn't appear for you. Easy. Alternatively they could just make the DLC free. Not unlike how they unlock extra content in Splatoon.

That'd be a hit or miss solution if progression in the level is dependent on that 1 particular item.

Yeah I don't think you thought that one through very well skywake...

Well with the amiibo you don't need the amiibo to use the costumes, it's unlocked if you play a stage that uses said costume or unlock it in-game. I imagine any DLC would be the same, granted without the ability to use it outside of downloaded stages if you have to pay for it.
Now Playing: Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, Crash Bandicoot 4
I think Skywake is saying the LEVEL itself would not appear for you if you don't download whatever DLC was released to help create that level, not the items/bosses/enemies would not show up in the stage, rather the stage itself. If it was a particular thing in the stage, it would not work but I also misunderstood his post at first.

Yes, I re-read what he said and the language is ambiguous. So I'll assume he meant that instead. Cos that would actually work!
Personally, I suspect any DLC will be free because it'll generally be too small to charge for (e.g just a bundle of 10 new items or something) and they've got into this nice groove of doing free DLC in order to keep a game relevant for as long as possible. Splatoon's obviously benefitted from all that extra exposure.

The difference is though that Splatoon started off from scratch, Nintendo even said so themselves that they were shocked at how well Splatoon did. Super Mario Maker is the latest entry in a 30 year franchise so paid DLC seems more likely.

I dunno, I got the sense that they'd just deliberately done that with Splatoon. It seems unlikely they ever meant for a full price game to have just 5 levels included in its price.
Haven't all the Smash Bros updates been free too? I haven't been following it.
