I have 75 stars now between my 6 levels. Would most people consider that good?
I'm kind of losing my passion for making them though. My goal is to have one of them streamed on GameXplain or something during one of their live streams, or one of my stages to just get really popular and well liked but I can't see that ever happening so part of me is giving up. So much work has to be put into me making a level (at least 4 hours) and I don't feel like they're ever going to be super successful.
I don't know. I guess I just need a long break from this game.
@Kinan:
The difference is you don't make any money from Super Mario Maker. It's there just for the joy of creating something. If people want to push their levels here heavily here then that's cool. However I personally don't promote most of my levels on here because I don't really want to be pushing my levels down people's throats. If they do well from people just randomly stumbling across them? That's fine by me.
The only levels I share here are the ones I've made that I think are particularly good. And the only reason I share those is because I think some people here might like to play them. Infact if it was as easy to share levels I'd starred as it is to share my own? I'd probably be posting other people's levels just as much as my own. I don't think there's anything wrong with people playing this game and relying purely on the tools in the game for sharing their level.
But yeah - I agree. @Rexcalibr is doing a fair amount of legwork getting players for their levels just by posting them here. Those are about twice my numbers, although I confess to have done some small amount of promotion for my levels elsewhere.
Yes, without promotion no one will find your level. I share my levels here and with my friends and I guess that is enough. I create level mainly for friends to play and enjoy. For one level I need 4-8 hours and I don't think that suffices for a really great level. You need a lot of time to reach perfection. Personally, I don't have the endurance for that. After hours of creating a level I just want to complete it and therefore they often are shorter than other levels.
Your second point though, to share levels that you starred, you kinda are helping the level find a wider audience just by starring it. Whatever algorithms Nintendo has running take care of that. Plus, if you really want to share what you starred, you can see what you've starred and access its ID number through your personal menu in Course World, and then starred courses. It's not as fancy as the graphics of NL's database, but it's possible if you found a good one.
Well, if I want to share one of my own levels I just go to miiverse.nintendo.net and copy/paste. If I want to share a level I've starred I have to turn on my Wii U, find the level and type it in here. Not quite as easy.

@Kinan: You make some excellent points; there's several things I could add but I have a tendency to ramble on and you hit the major points pretty well so I'll just leave most of it as is.
Good post.
@Rexcalibr I guess I'll just emphasize that you should be making courses in Mario Maker because you enjoy making them,
and
You will get AN audience for your level, you just don't know how big that audience will be. And if you manage to make a good impression, people will come back to play your other levels. And those are the people I find I strive to make levels for, not the people who play a level once and I never see them again.
I would have never guessed Weezing was so useful until I played a HeartGold Nuzlocke! My YouTube Channel! Video game related, of course! My Pushmo Levels

The biggest problem I have when designing a level is getting the difficulty right. When I'm testing one of my levels, it always feels easy since I happen to know the intended route through a level and where everything is. However, I'm usually surprised at the low pass rate and how difficult people are finding it.
@crimsontadpoles Make sure when you check completion rate you also compare how many people finished against how many people played. I'd consider myself an advanced (not quite expert) platformer and sometimes I die 2-4 times on a medium-easy difficulty level, which is a 20% completion rate at its lowest.

I've been out of town for a week but today I'm back and I can't wait to create a new level, and of course, play yours.
I honestly understand people's frustration with their levels not getting the attention they think they deserve. There's a guy in my miiverse list who makes incredibly average levels - they are not bad by any means, they are just "normal" - and he gets 30 to 50 stars each, always. I think I have done eight levels in total and I'm not sure I have reached 40 stars yet.
There must be 20 millions levels by now, so you can't expect to get recognition just because your level is good, or excellent, or whatever. There are other skills beside being good a making a level - be social, be able to "market" it, be lucky etc.
I am grateful to those three or four users who keep playing my levels, so I'm totally happy the way it is.
Now I have to catch up with all the levels you have made during last week...
Top-10 games I played in 2017: The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild (WiiU) - Rogue Legacy (PS3) - Fallout 3 (PS3) - Red Dead Redemption (PS3) - Guns of Boom (MP) - Sky Force Reloaded (MP) - ...

@Rexcalibr your most popular level is your most easy/fun level if I recall correctly. Check the completion rate of your levels. People award well designed, fun levels. I'm breaking 100 stars this weekend and doing it by challenging myself to make better and better levels. Making a few and waiting for a pewtiepie to pick one up isn't really in the spirit of things.
On this "advertising levels" business and the idea that you can't get an audience without pushing your levels. Of the 24 levels I've uploaded so far I've posted 5 on this site and then in these forums. I haven't promoted any levels anywhere else. I have 7 levels which have received 5 stars or more so far..... 2 I posted here... after they'd already got quite a few. The rest I haven't posted here.
I'm sure that promoting your levels on forums like this helps get a bigger audience. For sure. There's a reason why GameExplain is one of the top Makers. But I don't think it's at all true that you can't have a popular level without promoting. In the end it does come down to how good your levels are. Because think about it, what do you do more of even if you're making levels? I don't know about you guys but I've played a hell of a lot more levels than I've made. And I haven't counted but I wouldn't be that surprised if I've given out about as many stars as I've received.

Yesterday was my birthday (won't say how old), but I was able to play some other levels from you guys since I took the day off from work to relax.
@Kinan - I finished "All Around the World" today. Great level! Well done! Gave it a star. Will be getting to more of your levels this weekend. @ChelsAngel - I played your "Don't Touch Anything Level". That was one of the most beautiful and complex of the auto levels I've played So Impressed!!! Of course, I gave that a star. Will be playing more of yours this weekend as well. @Tamara - I played "Link's Teeny Dungeon". How clever and creative! Amazing job. Will be getting to more of yours this weekend.
I have many more of you on my follow list as well. (Sometimes I just forget which Mii names go with which forum members)
@DPisHere - Played your improved "Undertow Cove"! Great level! Such a good mix of an above ground level with swimming mechanics. Very well designed! Gave it a star.
@DrVollKornBrot I love the idea but wow it's a long level and I died at the end so I lost interest @Gandalf65 a trap level that requires hidden blocks to exit the level. Not a fan of this mechanic at all. @JDW great level! giants tie in is great and bomb blast mechanic was fun, starred @Nicetry05 very challenging. almost too long and i said to myself on the 5th try "okay we get the point" starred though.
