Also, maybe it's just me but I've played some stages that don't seem like their categorized properly in the Easy/Medium/Expert settings. I wonder how the server actually goes about to do that and determine the difficulty.

Well it's based on the rate at which people beat the level. So I'd assume that before people play your level it's just put in any of the three categories. And even then maybe the first few people who play it are above or bellow average skill level. So if your level hasn't had many players it's rated difficulty will be pretty variable.

Also on the topic of levels getting stars again. I've seen levels which have had 80+ players and zero stars. I've personally made some levels which are sitting at 9 stars after only 30 people have played it. I suspect that most people aren't giving out their stars lightly. I checked earlier and I've given out approximately 1 star for every 10 levels I've played. About 90% of which have been for levels I've seen in the 100 Mario Challenge. Assuming most people are being about as generous as that? There are definitely stars to get.

I think your theory is true about the difficulty because I was playing the 100 Mario Challenge on medium difficulty and one of the levels seemed way too difficult to be considered medium, and before I played it, I paused and it had zero play throughs and zero stars (the level was awful by the way). The person made the level start with a bunch of random pipes from the top and bottom and you basically try going in all of them until you find the one you can actually enter to make your way through the course. From there, it was just a mess.

I just made a pretty sweet timed pipe jumping segment with thwomps overhead ready to squish any slow pokes. It's pretty tough and intense. It is definitely a course that you will have to try multiple times to get the timing of the jumps correct. Well I hope it doesn't annoy you guys too much. I wanted to make a challenging speed level.

Regarding the stars debate, I don't care for widespread exposure or collecting many stars. Ever since I've gotten to 50 stars (20 uploads), I have not felt the need to fish for stars, and I don't care to be featured somewhere. I get all my satisfaction from you guys and real life friends playing what I have created

I agree, with 20 uploads it's just easier to maintain a nice balance of levels. They should've lowered the required stars to 25 or 30, for 50 you need to fish for stars or you're likely to have to wait too long and that might put some creative people off the game. If it wasn't for the forums here I probably would've put down the game myself by now.

On the topic of the 100 Mario Challenge levels not being any good, I noticed a large portion of the bad levels are in the New SMB theme. It really stood out in the last 3 100MC sessions I did. Even the original SMB levels are usually a step up from the NSMB ones, even though it's available from the start.

I played a level last week using the SMB 3 ghost house as it's theme. The level was a bit basic but I liked how it looked with lots of tall buildings and windows. My question is,how do you make windows appear in the background?I've got it open just now but I can't to find how to add them?

Edit : Never mind, found it,you shake the crate

Hmm... I just now noticed from videos that NSMB's P-Switch isn't a P-Switch but a yellow ? Switch.
It shouldn't but it bugs me now that I've properly noticed it, the New games had blue P-Switches and they weren't used for Mario Maker...

Just added a couple of new levels.I don't think they're my best but still lots of fun (I think) With Mario the Kidd I struggled to keep my theme going and it kind of falls away at the end but it will surely raise a smile with fans of the Master System classic.Cape me Home / Yoshi's Jungle I literally just finished,I put a lot of work into the look of the level which I hope comes across when you play it.Please try both routes and let me know what you think. Cheers!

Aside from the levels I've played from people here, the majority of levels I've played from other users (mostly on the 100 Mario Challenge) are not really any good.

Yep. Been saying this since the announcement of SMM. I swear people associate the level difficulty with "good" level design. If making a 50% and up completion level is a sign of a bad level designer, then I must be one of the worst

Guys, Mario Maker stopped giving me new content a while ago, and I'm only on the second row of stuff. What do I do?

@GuardianKing: Use every item you've gained at least once and just keep making, they'll appear soon enough.

@OneBagTravel: If it wasn't for the NL community I would have probably stopped playing levels other than my own after a few days,I've played 100 Mario twice and gave up as they were all really poor. The 10 Mario challenge I've only bothered beating twice as I found the levels dull and have no motivation to play more.I probably will eventually though to unlock the NWC levels. The majority of Featured levels I've played have been poor to average at best but never great and the top rated levels you don't even need to play. However many of the levels I've played from the NL community have been superb,I'm following a few and they never disappoint. It's here that has made this game for me,giving and receiving feedback, comments and stars from fellow NL users is really satisfying.

I created a level for a challenge over at a Something Awful stream. To contribute to the discussion, the only places I've been finding decent levels online is here and SA. It seems like both NL and SA have concentrated groups of adults together who care about decent level design and playability. Otherwise it's just been garbage, garbage, garbage. (Can we say bull**** here on NL? Lol. Because a lot of the levels I've run across are that!)

@OorWullie - try the Mario 10 Challenges, most are short but they showcase what the Mario Maker engine can do. I've taken some of their quick courses and "borrowed" a mechanic here and there Really gives you some level inspiration
