Judging by past Mario Kart games and the hype around this particular version it could break 1mill. Especially given that unlike previous consoles you there were no games to steal its thunder (on Wii Smash was out almost ontop of it and on 3DS it launched next to 3D Land and OoT). The problem is that this is the first Mario Kart game that you could download and for Mario Kart downloading the game makes sense. So the sales we'll see reported could be a lot lower than the actual sales.
I'd say it's a good guess. I think 3D World sold like half a million at first, and now it's up to 2 million physical copies. Mario Kart 8 probably will have sold more on launch, especially since more people have Wii U consoles, and it's debatably a bigger game that people have also bought consoles for,
Now all they have to do is invest that money back into the Wii U, then people have more reasons to buy a Wii U, on top of the already existing reasons. The last step is printing money, presumably, but it's just a guess. Any money they make is already probably going towards more software.
Nintendo could probably buy more exclusive 3rd party support. Who knows?

It's just a guess. According to that math(×1.5 than 3D World), MK8 will have sold 750,000 copies. More Wii U's have been sold since Super Mario 3D World and people bought the console for the game.

There are about 1.5x as many Wii Us sold than there were when 3D World launched. Also Mario Kart 8 is only competing with Watch Dogs right now whereas 3D World had A Link Between Worlds, CoD:Ghosts and the XBOne/PS4 launches. Plus it's Mario Kart, people aren't anywhere near as drained on Mario Kart as they have been on Mario.
This could be silly but I think this game would sell around 8-12 million and that it would have boosted the Wii U's sales by 900% probably a Nintendo like expectation.
In the short term, I'm guessing it'll do around 2 million like 3D world. In the long term, depends on the future of the Wii U. Mario games have long legs.
