I 42nd the idea of an NES Mini, if you can ever find one in stores. Like just about every single person here, I also highly suggest a Wii U. Everything about it is the very image of "kid-friendly", I can promise you that.

I would seriously advise against getting a Switch, though. The Joy-Cons can be easily lost and misplaced by a 5-yo, and the little stand in the back can probably be broken off. The hardware simply wouldn't be suitable for small children AT ALL. Really, I can't believe nobody else is bringing this up, it's a real issue.

Hope I helped. ^_^

I'd buy a Wii U used at Gamestop or some other store. It'll certainly be cheaper and Gamestop does have a good return policy on used products.

If you get a Switch, just be mindful of the hardware itself getting damaged. Perhaps your little girl is very responsible and there would be no issues- I know I was playing video games at around 6 years old and I took very good care of my NES at that time. If you get Wii U, you probably won't have to worry about it as much because it has a sturdy screen and no hinges or detachable parts.

That said, the Switch will probably launch for the same price Wii U is now at the end of the generation. $250 no game vs $300 with a game. And Switch will have a long life ahead of it, as opposed to Wii U which is virtually already dead (Zelda will be last major game for Wii U, as opposed to being one of the first major games for Switch).

If they're responsible enough to take care of it, go Switch. It's by far going to be the better console with a bright future ahead of it, and its launch cost will be no more than Wii U is now, after 4 years.

Remember the Wii U can play Wii games as well. And then there's the virtual console stuff from the online store.

You won't run out of games in the next 5 years with a Wii U.

I know you said he has an iPad and you're not interested in a 3ds but I highly recommend you reconsider! I have a wiiu and sadly there's only a few good games for it, other than that it's a dead system which is really sad. In fact I haven't fired up my wiiu in quite a while, whereas I use my 3DS systems all the time. I love the 3DS so much I own 4, yes 4 and all of them work just fine. I have an original 3DS, a 3DSXL, a 2DS, and a NEW 3DSXL.

If you're still stuck on a console by Nintendo I'd forgo the wiiu, as again it's a dead system. Yes the wiiu is totally awesome as in it doesn't suck but sadly there just isn't really that many games for it. The only few good games are; Hyrule Warriors, Splatoon, and Mario but that's pretty much it. The Nintendo 3DS is constantly pumping out new games like the new Pokémon Sun and Moon! Anyway if I were you I'd wait for the switch! Also you can look into a 2DS which is the same as a 3DS yet it has no 3D feature yet it will still play 3DS games and it's a lot cheaper.

Tldr; look into getting a 2DS/3DS, don't get a wiiu because sadly there probably won't be anymore games being released for it and currently there's only a handful for it that are any good. Wait for the switch!

I'd definitely stick with the Wii U for a five y/o. The Switch looks awesome, but it doesn't look like it's ruggedized for a kid. There's a pretty nice library of age appropriate games that are reduced in price at least some.

I wouldn't worry about them not making anymore games for it once the Switch comes out. Super Smash Bros. and Mario Kart 8 alone provide enough replay value to justify purchase of the system. I have close to 400 hours on those two games alone. For the $400 it costs for the system, plus the two games, it comes out to a dollar an hour for entertainment. Hard to beat that.
