I just wish to know how many of the people who said that completed the game, actually finished all levels eating just melons and got the black and white Yoshis. This game is about scores, if you beat it once and didn't stand the gameplay, hated the music and simply didn't enjoyed it, nothing to do, but if you liked it, there's a lot more stuff to uncover on this game. Personally, I like the gameplay, music and score system, but that's just me.
I really like Yoshi's Story. I was told a lot of things about it that basically turned me off but I decided to try it anyway and I'm glad I did. And yes, there's some hidden depth in the game that some don't realize.
@Twario: when it's called 'Yoshi's Story' and yet doesn't even have as much 'story' to it as SMW2: Yoshi's Island... yeah, i'd be expecting more to it, really.

I agree with that, the name was a bit misleading, I always thought the game should have been called "Yoshi's Pop up book"

@Terranigma Then you actually completed the game, good job , I'm glad you enjoyed it. I haven't been able to get all melons on 3 or 4 levels, but someday.

yoshis story was a 20-levels-competition jump&run.
after you unlocked everything the real fun started. playing through the stages more than halfway through! sniffin out all the hidden valuable honey melons! (what a darn challenge) putting in your name on the highscore list. the game had endless choices of how to play a stage with switching between the different colored yoshi's.
but it came out in an era of Super Mario 64's and a general "want see more 3D generation". Plus the high expectations from having a Yoshi's Island sequel... when it wasn't Yoshi's Island 2 but something completely new and different called Yoshi's Story.

I did indeed complete every level, get every melon, and find the black and white Yoshis. I still was not a huge fan of this game, lol. Beating my own scores did not interest me in the slightest, though making sure I had fully completed the game did keep me busy for a couple days. :3 I just remember that there was a Nintendo Power article or something back then where Miyamoto had been explaining his vision for Yoshi's Story and why they'd created it the way they did (where the ultimate goal was to beat your own scores and compete with your friends amongst yourselves to see who had the best score), and I think I facepalmed when i was done reading it. Ah well.

Unfortunately, I've only played Yoshi's Story during visiting hours. Now I'm wondering whether or not to download it on VC. But Yoshi's Island is still the best Mario platformer in 2D.
Why is Yoshi's story for N64 hated on so much? Easy: because it was such a let down after the masterpiece that was Yoshi's Island. Sure, Yoshi's Story can be sort of fun on its own, but it just pales in comparison to its predecessor on the SNES.
...wuh? Yoshi's Island is probably the hardest Mario game out there.
Indeed. Especially those darn Special stages. They're up there with the Lost Levels in terms of frustration.
The difference between Island and Story was that Island was designed to be the next big thing on the SNES. A lot of effort went into making it. Whereas Story was something they pooped out while they were making the next big thing on the N64 to give gamers something to do while waiting. I find it unfair to compare the two as Story clearly had a completely different target - it was just simply "filler" and as such its not so bad. Still better than a lot of other third party 2D platformers on the N64. Although Mischief Makers was surely the best of them all. Story didn't come close to that one.
