I don't think anyone necessarily hates it. It just doesn't feel special to me. The time based system just doesn't feel as tight as Paper Mario or Mario & Luigi, and the level environments (so far) aren't that fun to look at. The menus are bland, too.
I think I just need to force myself to get back into it. I'm in an annoying forest maze ATM. Grrr.
Weird I'm sure it was some forrest maze I stopped playing at too, loved the game when I first played it, completed the whole thing, but now I just can't seem to get into it at all, seems almost like a chore to play now, will retry it eventually hopefully I'll find it more fun further in, I mean I did enjoy the game originally.

Well, I wouldn't call it hate per se, but rather extreme disappointment. Before it was released on VC, people were drowning it with hype, even saying it was better than M&L and PM. So then when I finally played it, it turned out to be just an easy, average, goofy-looking game with some truly tedious segments.
@mickey. I heard somewhere that the first BoF was wrapped up in some sort of legal issues, so it's VC release could be awhile. It's on GBA though if you want it bad enough.

Yeah, I remember all that hype. I made sure to ignore it when I first played it, and I actually enjoyed it for a little while. But then I started to realize how annoying the platforming is, how unavoidable the overworld enemies are, how extremely difficult and unintuitive timing attacks and blocks were. It just became unbareable! It's a shame, too. For all it's goofieness, I found it very funny and charming. But sadly, it wasn't enough to keep me playing it, and now I haven't touched it in months.
As for BoF GBA: Duly noted. I'll give it a look-see next time I'm at a game store.
I really got to download Breath of Fire 2, eventually!

@SKTTR: I was hoping I wouldn't be the only Shining Force fan on here.
I wouldn't really count the Shining Forces, since they're strategy-RPGs, and "Turn-based RPG" usually refers to tradition JRPGs, like Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy.
