I checked the Wii Shop Channels from both Nippon and the United States. Sonic the Hedgehog 1 and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (the Genesis versions) were taken off only the shop from Nippon, not the one from the United States.
I thought the Sonic games were already removed once before from Japan.
I thought it was something about the Sonic theme (title and invincibility music) that Sega had licensing issues with, possibly just for Japan.
Although if anyone remembers Sonic Spinball, it seems there was an issue where the title screen music was replaced. Reportedly a small amount of US copies have the Sonic theme (which is thought to be first-prints) while otherwise most copies worldwide have a different song.
Since I still have the original Genesis carts, as well as both Sonic Gamecube collections, I never bothered to get the VC versions. Since they might get pulled though, I'm gonna try and get them all before they do. Just got Sonic 1 last night. Next up will be Sonic and Knuckles because of the lock-on emulation, then hopefully I can get Sonic 2 and 3 before they are gone.
Well, in Wii U there is the only way to play this games, via Wii menu of course. I already have Genesis collection on Gamecube and 3D versions in 3DS. I don´t know if download them, maybe Sonic 2 because you can use Knucles if you download Sonic&Knucles in Wii. Maybe to download them to have a rare game in my Wii. I don´t know. I preffer to use that points in a lot of games I wish in the Wii VC that I still have in my wishlist.
I remember this games were deleted in Japan time ago.
Me gusta jugar videojuegos. Soy de México. Sorry my english grammar. I love the Virtual Console, party and fighting games too.
