They could always sell the franchises to Sega and Konami. I hear they're pretty good with IPs.

Current games: Pokemon Shield

@MegaTen You make a good point, I got a go at Grabbed by the ghoulies late and it was good, Conker graphically looked great but the sensoring didn't help it and I was disappointed to lose local mutliplayer like the N64 version. Viva Pinata and Kameo were good, Perfect Dark Zero was a chore to play. It's fair to say after Conker on the N64, things began to go down hill.

Why choose from a range of great characters like Wario, Waluigi or Baby Luigi, when you have all green jelly Luigi and Toadette. Why have regular Toad and Toadette or another character when you can have a blue or yellow dressed Toad? 😵

SuperGhirahim64

@TheLZdragon That would be interesting alright. Sega especially, the way they handled F Zero GX was unbelievable. They don't get enough credit for that brilliant game.

I still hold Rare in high regard and there are still some original staffers there. What Duncan means is that he doesn't want the team to make a new version of the same thing again just with better visuals and sound. However, he doesn't rule out making a new game in an old franchise: "Do something new with it [old IP] from a gameplay paradigm or scenario or something that could actually be genuinely different and innovative".

I am a big Rare fan as well!

Sell your IP to Konami? Maybe if you want a pachinko machine...

I liked the days when Rare was like Nintendo.

Great games, great graphics, great music, great content, great gameplay.

Rare's games in general were either as good as Nintendo's or better.

Donkey Kong Country beat Yoshi's Island in sales. I personally was a huge fan of DKC. As a kid you wanna have the coolest looking games, now that I'm older I really appreciate the crayon kiddie Baby Mario stuff inside Yoshi's Island, but DKC was definately way cooler, faster. It has the better soundtrack of the two. It had graphics and animations that were outstandingly beautiful at the time.

Killer Instinct took the Street Fighter concept to another level and beat Mortal Kombat's gameplay with ease.

GoldenEye and Perfect Dark were essential fps, the best fps games for a whole generation of consoles!

Banjo-Kazooie was on the same level as Super Mario 64 and even resolved the camera issues. How could they release an even bigger sequel just two years later, along with 4 other Triple AAA games in the same timeframe?

Conker's Bad Fur Day is the most impressive game on the N64 at every possible angle.

There are lots who argue that even Diddy Kong Racing was better than Mario Kart 64 (In single player it was, in multi it wasn't).

Blast Corps and Jet Force Gemini are two of the best games I've ever played in my entire life!

Donkey Kong 64 was is the biggest collectathon ever, and even though I personally didn't like it that much (felt like a reskinned Banjo game with Banjo music instead of being the anticipated Donkey Kong Country in 3D) I totally got my moneys worth out of it completing this 100%.

The asking price for Starfox Adventures is worth it for the soundtrack alone.

Then they developed for Xbox and lost me.

Rare Replay is a tempting game, but it's on the wrong console.
I don't like what they did to the Xbox-Banjo, -Conker, and Killer Instinct games. The Kinect Sports games were likely the worst games they did since the NES era.
Not everything's lost though: Sea of Thieves, Viva Pinata, Kameo: Elements of Power I'd gladly buy on Switch.

Also, I'm still hyped for Yooka-Laylee. I hope we are getting a polished retail release for Switch. I would be the first to preorder. Really, they should have polished the game on PS4 and Xbox more. Feels rushed. People expect more quality testing coming from such a studio. I would be annoyed as well, because I'm expecting a game that runs as flawlessly and perfect as Banjo-Kazooie did from its launchday onwards, but instead players get issues here and there.

I love Banjo-Kazooie so much because it's like playing the Rare version of a classic European tale and the characters are excellent: Banjo, Kazooie, Gruntilda... If you have read these tales and played Banjo-Kazooie when you were a kid they become part of your life.

@SKTTR Although I agree with all of your points, I think they also made great games for Microsoft. Nintendo had the chance to buy Rare but they didn't bother so Microsoft bought the Stamper brothers's part and then Nintendo sold their part to Microsoft. Rare said that they were surprised by Nintendo's lack of interest. Nintendo disregarded Rare.

Very interesting reflections about their games, Rare games have great visuals, music and gameplay. The only one I have complaints about is also Donkey Kong 64 but hey, they made so many games in such a short time that it's understandable.

Donkey Kong Country trilogy, Killer Instinct, Banjo-Kazooie, Banjo-Tooie, Blast Corps, Diddy Kong Racing, Goldeneye 007, Perfect Dark, Jet Force Gemini, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Star Fox Adventures, Viva Piñata, Kameo... I even enjoyed Grabbed by the Ghoulies (the Xbox One version at 1080p 60fps). I have a love-hatred relationship with Nuts and Bolts. Sea of Thieves looks amazing.

Donkey Kong Country 2 is my favourite 2D platformer and Banjo-Kazooie my favourite 3D platformer.

@SKTTR well said. Sums up my thoughts exactly. It just annoys me that during that times, games were coming left right and centre, high quality games centred around fun and gameplay. Now games are pretty much just dumb interactive movies mostly, no charm and gameplay is an afterthought, and franchises like Banjo and Conker are thrown aside for absolutely no reason. Sometimes I wonder do developers understand what makes gaming fun? I think Yooka-Laylee sort of lost that in terms of level size and even using Unity, sometimes it feels like a mobile game with a controller which is no good thing. If it was a polygonal N64 game with the same size and limits I would say it would have been much better. Advanced technology can be detrimental at times.

@SKTTR Although I really love DK64, collectible over-tramping aside.

SuperGhirahim64

@BlueOcean Also solid points. How I wish those days were still alive How does Banjo return I wonder? These days can't just be over in my opinion. It was the reason I got into gaming. My first games ever were Banjo and Goldeneye.

@Banjos_Backpack I feel for you! I don't know, I am always dreaming of a new Banjo-Kazooie game. Do we have to get rid of Craig Duncan or what?

Those Rare games were built around gameplay with nice visuals and music and these elements fit together. A magical recipe that two decades later seems to be so elusive.

SuperGhirahim64

@BlueOcean I feel for myself at this point. If they didn't mention Banjo-Threeie in Tooie and then show GameCube footage I might have been alright by now, but I think there could be a day yet don't you? Yooka gives me hope. Nothing replaces it though, If Playtonic get the license I will be delighted.

Haha, Craig can stay just give fans what they want. Don't they do customer research anymore? Do a Killer Instinct and license out. I really fear what will happen if sea of thieves flops.

You're exactly right with those last two lines. A big reason why I find many games hard to love now. I went to Xbox during the Wii era waiting for Rare titles, especially for them, but nothing worth talking about. I came back at Wii U and went through the Wii back catalogue, getting Skyward Sword at launch, suddenly I regretted years of owning an Xbox and I won't be away from Nintendo again.

@Banjos_Backpack I hope that they make Banjo-Threeie with Gregg Mayles eventually. Playtonic and Rare would work together on it. Let's dream and pray.

SuperGhirahim64

@BlueOcean No reason why it can't happen. In fact, it's absolutely stupid that it isn't happening. Madness.

"I think that what Rare is, is doing the kind of games that only Rare would go do." - Craig Duncan

I've just glanced at a list of games developed by Rare...

During what I'd consider to be their golden years, their release timeline reads like this:
Action, Shooter, Platformer, Racer, Platformer, Platformer, Shooter, Platformer, Racer, Platformer, Shooter, Action, Platformer, Racer, Platformer, Platformer, Racer, Action, Platformer, Platformer

In more recent times, it reads like this:
Life Sim, Life Sim, Construction, Sports, Sports, Fighting, Sports, Compilation, Adventure
...not exactly 'the kind of games that Rare do' now are they?!

I imagine that if he were to become head of EA Sports, he'd probably retain the company name...but stop producing sports titles! ..what a clown this guy is, seriously!

@NaviAndMii need we say anymore? Couldn't have put it better 😥

@SKTTR I couldn't agree more, but would have to throw in Battletoads for the NES. A very difficult but one of a kind action game...every level was a different game in itself.

NaviAndMii

@Banjos_Backpack Yeah, I'll never understand their strategy...they had a winning formula but - for no apparent reason - they decided to tear it up and start again! They no longer make the kind of games that they're known for and they routinely misuse their own IP...to me, they just seem like a rudderless ship - lost at sea - making wrong-turn after wrong-turn...and it's very sad to see

@NaviAndMii nicely put. I agree unfortunately, but I still have faith in them. I think maybe the work best under hardware restrictions. Make a polygonal game using N64 limits and it will turn out so much better. Also that roll move is an absolutely diabolical alternative for the talon trot.

He could do well running a cable TV network.
Last I was watching TV (several years ago), the Biography channel was running everything but biographies. (though MTV was probably the more famous example of this)
