@redd214 I'm sure Microsoft will probably have a Crackdown 3 focused Inside Xbox around early next month. We still don't really know much about single player.

@ThanosReXXX Hah, I'm pretty careful with stuff, but of course I use tools as they're meant to be used for the task at hand, so in the case of a controller, I've no idea what my hands are doing, I'm immersed in the moment of the game....that may or may not involve crushing the stick against the housing with extreme force, entirely subconciously. Sore fingers at times lead me to that conclusion But it's not a "being rough with things" issue as much as using it for what it's meant for in the way that my primate brain processes holdable tools

I ran through 360 controllers more than any other controller....those sticks were fragile.

@redd214 Oddly the Joycons seem pretty rugged. I have weird drifting in my most used one, but strangely it shows up in the test screen as perfectly centered....yet in games it can wander...I suspect it's dust or something caught in just the right spot, but none of the tricks seem to get it out, so I do have a replacement on standby (also because an incident of dropping the Switch on a wood floor left the other joycon not latching as firmly as I'd like (an unfortunate incident where I put it carefully on the chair, and a velcro cord strap on my headphones hooked ever so slightly to my shirt, and when I got up, so did the Switch. Zero damage aside from a chip off the joycon latch. Still works fine, and latches mostly fine, but occasionally I'm afraid it may slip off during play.) The drifting one is the left one, though...it wasn't the launch batch, but just after, the neon yellow for ARMS. I have a Switch Pro though with a disastrous drift...thing is I barely even used that controller....a few months of Splatoon and that was about it...and it was fine when I last played it, picked it up 8 months later and it drifted like crazy. That was that first batch of Pros though that I've heard a lot of QC issues happened with.) The Joycons had way more Splatoon time on them and are still fine over a year later other than the dust drift.

@SuperWeird At least I found someone worse than me! Yeah the shoulder buttons are connected by a plastic bridge across the USB port. The Elites break it more easily due to the inflexibility of the aluminum button heads.

I think the common theme is probably those of us that get fully immersed and play on the controls like we're really in win/survive at all costs situations are more likely to damage the controller.

@redd214 Yeah, the silence on Crackdown 3 is deafening.... I'm worried about that game....

@NEStalgia Well, what you describe, most definitely does NOT sound like "using things as they were meant to be used". I'm sure Microsoft is stoked with the attach rate of extra controllers per console, but when controller housings are creaking and tearing during use, or if you're hands are hurting, you're definitely not using them correctly. (edit: unless of course, the controller in question is too big or too small for someone's hands)

Hand-eye coordination is an actual thing, you know, so I'm always VERY aware of what my hands are doing, in relation to controlling what's happening on screen.

Right now, I'm looking at my still nearly mint condition 360 controllers, that came with my first gen, RROD-surviving Xbox 360, and I'm pretty sure that both me and my controllers are like "over-the-moon" glad that they didn't end up with a certain other owner...

@NEStalgia What kind of Gorilla/Hulk grip do you have? I've broken one controller in my life from use and that was a SNES controller because I had crap timing in SFII when I was a kid so I hit the L and R buttons way harder than I needed to.

I feel like no news outlets are talking about Crackdown 3. I promised myself I'd get it day one but...this is weird...even for an embargo.

@NEStalgia Can you post a link to those stick caps for the Elite controller so I can have a look?

Crackdown 3 is included in Game Pass and I have Game Pass until the end of the world... People are not talking about it because they just want to play it and see. I think it's going to be better than many people expect.

Banjo-

ThanosReXXX

@BlueOcean No offense, but I think that @redd214 meant people at Microsoft and partners not talking about it, not people of the general public. That these aren't talking about it, isn't bad and/or too strange, seeing as there's simply nothing new to talk about, other than wondering about the when and where, but the fact that nobody official is talking about it, could potentially be bad news, so here's hoping we're not in for yet another delay.

For a game that's supposed to launch somewhere next month, according to the last official reports, the silence surrounding it, is quite deafening...

@Ryu_Niiyama @ThanosReXXX Yeah, I have zero awareness of my hands while I'm playing, it's all an autopilot/done by feel/instinct..... Hard to describe, but my brain isn't processing "push stick and X to do this on the screen" - what's in the game is most of what I'm aware of and I'm "turning the wheel" or "running right as hard as I can"....I think my brain abstracts that there's a controller involved at all. I'm "running to the right", and there's an abstraction of analog that, if I want to go right faster or turn sharper, I press harder. With the Splatoon example, if I want to dodge the sniper fast, I just kind of automatically press hard to try to move faster to the side. Not fully consciously, that's just kind of the automatic motion.

I was also a nightmare for flute/violin as a kid....if I'm focusing on the music in front of me, my fingers/hands go into death grip mode on the instrument - though it's apparently a common problem, according to violin teachers, as the hands are gripping devices....and it takes a lot of dedicated practice and training to not do that.

@BlueOcean https://scufgaming.com/scuf-elite-precision-thumbsticks-and-p...
You have to buy the handles too (they're replacement grips for the outer rubber grip on the controller....I didn't use those though they're nicely molded and ergonomic, they're also ugly, and I'm not tempted to mess with popping the grip panel off with a pry tool until the rubber peels on its own

GameStop is the exclusive US retailer for Scuf (other than buying direct), so I'm not sure who has it in the UK, but I'm certain someone does, it's the "official" brand of controller for most eSports (because they product place it there as a sponsor. ) Their own controllers are weird hackneyed stock controllers with a ton of upgrades and a spotty reliability history as it's all hand-done. (Every pro gamer has a Scuf...and a pile of dead Scufs...) But the Elite accessories are really nice. The sticks have a different textures and a really "grippy" material. Kind of like the newer (gray) DualShock 4 rubber, but even softer/grippier. I suspect the grip material is half of why it's popular in eSports...it does make it effortless to just kind of guide the stick with a light touch and let it adhere to your thumb.

Only catch is some reviews of them complained that the rubber disintegrated rapidly on people (with pictures), it looks almost like it melted. I haven't had mine long enough to evaluate durability, but the material choice may react with certain skin chemistries for some people. So far, I've had them about 2 months and they look like the day I bought them. But if you like customizing your controllers, it's a fun upgrade for the already great Elite!

ThanosReXXX

@NEStalgia Man, I'm starting to think you're living on Earth Two, or any of the other Earth's in the DC Universe, seeing as I've never heard of any of such practices or "common" problems. I'm also starting to think that people that DON'T wreck their controllers (or musical instrument) are the abnormal ones.
Well, almost...

And I most certainly never had any special training or whatever. Just a case of being cautious with your own belongings/devices, and being aware that your head is controlling your hands, and as such, it shouldn't be too hard to be aware of them.

With all this in the back of my mind, I would also steer clear of delicate glass work like wine and champagne glasses, if I were you...

I do recognize the feeling/sensation of wanting to go faster or more into a certain direction, but in my case, like with many other gamers, that mostly translates into me moving the controller along with the movement, as if it is a motion control device. I've certainly pushed thumb sticks all the way to the ends of their casing, but never to a breaking or tearing point, so apparently my subconscious thing is that I have an automatic brake in my mind for doing that.

Might also stem from my N64 controller wrecking period. I've destroyed enough of them, to imprint in my mind that it's a definite waste of money to keep doing that...

@ThanosReXXX LOL, technically you're write, not don't that is probably the more unusual one. Might have to find music teachers to ask

Ahh yeah, the moving the controller thing. That's a common thing....I think Nintendo cites that as part of the inspiration of the Wiimote in fact. I don't have that particular issue, my controller stays perfectly still.....so maybe you have one or the other, the death grip of forced input, or the waiving and flailing with the motion depending on brain wiring, but not both

N64 controllers broke themselves though

NEStalgia

Banjo-

@NEStalgia Thanks! I might get this. It says that the grip handles are easy to install but how do you install them? It seems that the original ones are glued to the controller so... :S I don't know if I would mess with it either. Do you prefer the original sticks (not the caps) or these? If the caps are "grippy" that sounds good to me.

Banjo-

NEStalgia

@BlueOcean I haven't installed the grips personally, but looking at the instructions and pieces it seems that the rubber is glued onto a plastic panel that can be popped out, but they are indeed glued/taped down. They provide a spudger-like pry tool in the package, and some double sided adhesive strips to secure the new ones down. I has posts that fit into holes to keep it centered in the controller.

The replacements cover the outside panel (the controller edge to the seam on the back half of the stock grip. The inner rubber from the seam to the paddle mount area remains the stock one.

I can say, I imagine the Scuf grips are better. They're grippy, and they have lots of ergonomic molding that feel to me like it would be very comfortable in hand. BUT, yeah, I figure given all the reports of stock rubber peeling, I'll just wait until mine peels off on its own and then consider installing these. It's nice enough as it is to not want to mess it up.

The caps, I definitely prefer the Scufs. The stock ones are very nice (though my Elite caps has a deeper "ridge" along the edge than my normal X1 controller, and that always annoys my thumb compared to on my normal X1 controller where it's only a slight ridge.) But the 3 height choices versus 2 and having height choices for the dome caps where the stock has only one is really nice, and I just love the grippy material and texture! There's only one of each size in the Scuff pack (S/M/H concave, S/M/H convex.) So it's assumed you'll use a convex cap on the right hand side. If you want two same-sized concaves it requires two packs. Personally I'm using the medium concave on the left, and the short convex on the right and really like that setup. It's perfect ergonomics for my thumb reach!

NEStalgia

Banjo-

@NEStalgia Thanks! I didn't know this existed. I considered buying an official replacement but for two caps that needed replacement I was tempted to buy a second Elite controller instead (white for a change). I like your suggestion more though, I want to try the different size and the grippy caps. I will buy just one kit for now and try different setups. I will search an online shop that sells this Scuf elite precision thumbsticks and pro grip handle kit here, I have never seen these in brick-and-mortar shops.

The sticks did, the housings didn't. That's where I came in...

As for moving the controller to and fro: my movement isn't that over-exaggerated, but I actually do catch myself doing it on a regular basis. But not nearly as crazy as you see some people do, using a controller like a steering wheel, and turning their wrists almost 240 degrees in hopes of it having any effect on screen...

As for the musical instrument bit: as long as you keep your hands of the expensive Stradivariuses of this world, you might just be fine. Or start playing drums, you know, those sturdy ones, with stretched animal hides...

@ThanosReXXX I can proudly say I've never broken a controller housing, just the fragile moving parts internal components

Well ok there was that Madcatz Genesis controller that failed for no reason and I opened it to see if I could fix it....

@ThanosReXXX Haha, I know for a fact that I don't have to worry about any museum entrusting me with a Strad. Though my interpretation of the opening movement of Mary Had a Little Lamb has been known to move people to tears.

@redd214 WE HAPPY FEW!!! That's awesome! I don't do horror and wouldn't buy it, and that's waay too reality for me to feel comfortable with, but I'm so sooo curious about it. That's perfect! I'm shocked a new game like that is up on GP!

NEStalgia

ThanosReXXX

@NEStalgia Yeah, probably tears of laughter or tears of pain and/or sympathy for the instrument...

By the way: forgot to mention that for this month, I can actually agree with you on Microsoft's free games offerings being a bit meh sometimes. How the heck can they pass off a game they've already had in GwG as a "new" free game?

'The console wars are like boobs: Sony and Microsoft fight over which ones look the nicest and Nintendo's are the most fun to play with.'

Nintendo Network ID: ThanosReXX

redd214

@NEStalgia yeah We Happy Few is definitely not something I'm interested in. The whole drug induced angle is not something I can get down with but hopefully people can find fun in it. Seems both Plus and GWG are getting "AA/AAA" games that have bombed at release pretty quickly after launch. On plus we got Onrush last month not even 6 months after release and I think we happy few is the same. Obviously not ideal for the devs but I like the trend.

Lego Movie is cool though, played it not long after the movie came out with the kiddos and we had fun with it. Nothing special just a pretty standard Lego game if you're into those. Haven't played the others

@redd214 My problem with We Happy Few is it's too much like what it feels real life is now. Very very Orwell/MiniLuv. That's more terrifying than The Last of Us. But yet it looks so very well done....

Yeah, Onrush really tanked. The game was just flat and bland. I'm surprised WHF got a poor reception though.

NEStalgia

redd214

@NEStalgia ehh I was pretty down on Onrush after trying the beta but somewhat enjoyed it when it came to Plus. Ended up getting the Platinum in it an for the most part had fun with it. Definitely could've used a bit more time in the oven though tbh. Not something I will probably ever go back to but was a fun 12-15 hours.
