@Octane Is that a picture of those fires caused by those WAY too high pallet stacks?
The streets looked quite eerie there, almost like volcano ashes and embers were floating around.

The damage was pretty extensive as well. Wonder if any of the people involved are going to get some kind of punishment or fine to pay.

Hey everyone, I would like to say I am sorry for the trouble I caused in this Xbox thread. And to BlueOcean as well. Anyone has a system they can enjoy and we should respect their decisions to enjoy them.

@NEStalgia Grabbed by the Ghoulies is also very gamey, isn't it? The art style is cool, the characters might be a bit simple (originally an Xbox game) but the environments hold up well. It's a good challenge and I guess that the 60 fps on Xbox One makes it more enjoyable now and the HD output more beautiful than back in the day. I completed everything but I suspect that without the extra responsiveness that 60 fps allow it would have been more frustrating. Rare games aren't easy usually but they have that gamey thingy that makes me want to beat them, like a well-balanced difficulty or something.

@ThanosReXXX Ok, I take it back, the Dutch are nucking futs. Though I really always knew that.

What is it with people and fireworks? It seems to be getting more and more common in general. It's freaking explosives on a rocket and these people play with them as toys....and it seems almost officially sanctioned. Nobody should have to put up with people firing explosives in proximity to them. And if it's ok, nobody should have a problem if I buy a belt driven mounted minigun and just have some holiday fun on the highway, right?

@Octane Of course it's not CA, I don't see any 300ft Che statues in rainbow cannabis tshrts in that picture....

@Dezzy Geez XV is such a disgrace. It's technically a better game (kinda) XIII base, but....I mean there's nothing about it they got right, and they don't know who they're selling it to. And it somehow sold well....

NEStalgia

ThanosReXXX

@NEStalgia They tried to regulate it, and limit the amount that can be bought legally (also by making it more expensive), but like almost every year, people just go to Belgium or Germany, and buy insane amounts there for a third or less of the Dutch prices. And they buy illegal stuff, material that is practically a military grade explosive.

Some appendages most definitely did get lost in the aftermath, unfortunately, but I don't feel sorry for most of those people. Only for the innocent bystanders that got hurt, but not for the idiots that buy illegal fireworks and lost a limb or an eye. Karma is a you-know-what...

Still, fireworks are highly impractical and/or imprecise as a weapon in general, so it hardly compares to a minigun...

Last off topic remark: was strolling through the Nintendo eShop yesterday, and almost got tempted to buy that Senran Kagura game, seeing as it's only $9.99 and I'm still kind of curious what all the fuss is about with HD Rumble, and I'm not about to pay almost 50 bucks for it, to get a collection of mini-games from Nintendo themselves...

But ultimately, I didn't. Now, I'm pondering getting either Golf Story or Rogue Trooper Redux, although in the end, I'll probably get them both. And I decided to get Mario Odyssey, as a final purchase for the time being, so between those games, Breath of the Wild and all the free games and demos, such as Fallout Shelter and Warframe, it should be more than enough to keep me busy for some time to come.

So, how are things with the games you recently bought, like the ones I drew your attention to?
Did you get to play any of them during the Christmas holidays, or are you still engrossed in Forza Horizon 4?

@BlueOcean It really is. You're right about 60fps being important with how gamey it is. It's too fast and chaotic for me to think about a 30fps "cinematic" presentation. It seems like gamers in general just want sameness in controls. When it comes to a game that plays just like others, like RDR2, that's a valid desire (why would I need to do a common task differently than every other application that does it a simpler way?) but gamers seem to reject anything that requires an unconventional input method. Ghoulies is most definitely unconventional in the inputs, not in a "why would they do this?" way, but a very design-intent driven way. It's very Nintendo...which shouldn't be surprising from Rare, and it got the same kind of apathy Nintendo's unconventional ideas (be it WiiU in general, SF0, etc) get. (Ok, Kid Icarus: Uprising had legit terrible controls, and Sakurai still refuses to admit that.... )

I tried Perfect Dark for the first time yesterday...it's....it's not Golden Eye. Technically I just have a hard time getting into N64 era shooters. They occupy this weird space between modern realistic shooters and fast arcade shooters and don't really represent either very well when playing them after their time. The repetitive maze like shooter looks beautiful on the X..and the shooting was fun at first, but it's so repetitive, until you get to an area where you have no idea how to get through a locked door (or the area where you have to wait for the bug thing to go through the lasers to give you access) are painfully dated. It makes me think of No One Lives Forever, but I dare say, that game was far better. It should have been a Rare game . I'm hoping PD0 improves on the formula a bit, being a 360 game...I have higher hopes for it. Though I like the original's character design better.....in 0 they try to maker her into a pre-Bayonetta or something

@ThanosReXXX Yeah the same kinda garbage with fireworks in a lesser quantity here, unfortunately in terms of per-state differences (and bizarre laws in some states where if you're from a state you can't buy high power ones, but if you're from out of state you can...meaning they can sell them, just not to in-state residents....meaning everyone who wants to buy them, does. Then they keep legalizing more and more classes but with a "but you can't use them in a residential neighborhood" clause....meaning you can buy anything and only if you get caught using it where you shouldn't is it wrong. AKA it's the "we don't feel like enforcing the laws so we'll just legalize everything" legislation. I don't care if the people doing it blow themselves to kingdom come...just don't damage anything of mine. But what I find most terrifying is how many people so clearly are willing to flagrantly ignore laws without even a pretense of following them as long as they think they can get away with it. It's pretty telling of how nasty all the people around you are and how they live the rest of their lives too.

And thus I spend my budget on video games rather than dealing with those creatures.

Senran: LOL, in a moment of weakness I actually bought Estival on PS4's sale due to someone mentioning it in the PS4 thread along with a bunch of other games I knew I was interested in. I thought "how bad can it really be? Some say it's decent, maybe it can't be as bad as I've heard." I started it, and in like 5 minutes it has an upskirt of a child-like character. sigh...I won't delete it since I paid money for it...but...yeah it's as bad as I've heard and have no reason to actually play it. And that's not as bad as the "HD Rumble flan" one.

BOTW + Odyssey is kind of the grail of Switch for now anyway. Oh, and XC2. Obviously the more arcade games like Smash, ARMS etc. as well. Oh and Rabbids if your'e into SRPGs. Those are the "must must must" haves for now. But 2019....oh by that's a crowded year!

Nah, I haven't gotten to many of the others...just whittling through Rare Replay here and there while hooked on Smash, Pokemon Let's Go, and messing with some fighting games on PS4 (Tekken 7: We can't be bothered to properly support XBox Edition, SFV, KoFXIV.) The past week or so the XBox has been getting a rest for the first time since May other than poking and Rare games and a little Horizon 4 here and there, technically for audio testing. Plus yesterday my HDD was spinning all day again after I rebooted the box due to a UI slowdown that hasn't happened in ages (Jan update incoming?)

But yeah, it's mostly a Switch kind of month this month for me I did pick up some BC gems on the last sale though: Rayman Origins/Legends (I have Origins on Vita, Legends on WiiU and Switch, physically, but it's a treat on the 1X and it was like $7), MGS: Rising (never played it, didn't know it was BC, along with FFXIII-X2 it was one of the 7th gen games I regretted missing.), and Prince of Persia (I had a PS3 copy somewhere I never got to.) Also, Hitman 2 was half price (already, not unexpected though) so I grabbed it. Not ready to play it but I loved 1 (it might still be on sale....who was it here asking about it back in Oct?)

@NEStalgia I played Goldeneye 007 back in the day and I still have a N64 and the cartridge, what is a bit unplayable now is the frame rate and the controller -innovative and industry-leading at the time- doesn't help much. So I was a N64 player and still can see this.

I never beat Perfect Dark on N64 because I couldn't beat the final boss in the easiest difficulty setting, but on Xbox One this is different, I beat the final boss in two of the three difficulty settings. 1080p and 60 fps are the reason why. I really believe that Goldeneye 007 still is one of the best, if not the best, shooter ever made, but only a remake or remaster (not that Wii thing) can prove it now. Perfect Dark is nice but, as you said, it's more complicated than Goldeneye 007 so it feels less intuitive even navigating the levels. I used a guide, I never needed guides for Goldeneye 007. Why Perfect Dark Zero was hated? I will never know. Granted, I never played Perfect Dark Zero on 360 but on Xbox One, but I played Perfect Dark on N64 and Xbox One and still believe that Perfect Dark Zero, the sequel, is the better game. Much better. It's awesome, one of my favourite shooters. It's a bit too challenging sometimes but once you learn to move by stealth it's great and the boss battle was "easy" compared to Perfect Dark's.

Banjo-

NEStalgia

@BlueOcean Cool, I'm definitely looking forward to Zero then!

Perfect Dark 1, I wish I could like it. I don't dislike it....and it's pretty on the X. And controls well (well-enough anyway.) But the environments so far aren't giving me incentive to play it.

It's such a shame there's almost zero hope of Golden Eye every being remade....a licensed game with broken publishing contracts is kind of doomed to the dustbin.

NEStalgia

Banjo-

@NEStalgia I hope that the fan that made the first level remakes the whole game. I would pay him for it even if it's consider "illegal". I was so disappointed with the Wii version. Anyway, James Bond is featured in Forza Horizon 4 and Nintendo's publishing rights for Goldeneye 007 expired 20 years later, in 2017, according to several sources. So right now it would require an agreement between MGM and Rare, apparently. Rare was making a remaster for Xbox 360 but Nintendo stopped it, I wonder if it will be released eventually.

@NEStalgia Rumble flan? If you mean the hand rubbing one, then we're on the same page.

And still buying more games? You're creating a back log for your back log, at this rate...

Concerning other Switch titles: played some demos, and for now, Mario+Rabbids, Project Octopath and ARMS are on the "to buy first" list, and after that, we'll see what gets added. Still hoping for some Metroid Prime 4 footage, before the end of the first half of this year, so I'm hoping they're not going to keep that locked away until this year's E3.

As far as Goldeneye is concerned: that will probably be in limbo forever, unfortunately. I did play the unofficial HD PC remake, though, and that's pretty good, actually, but it's on PC, so I guess you're not going to play it any time soon, and seeing as it's unofficial, there's zero chance that it'll ever reach any consoles...
(although there is that developer mode option on the Xbox One, so who knows... )

Hitman 2 is a good choice, in my opinion. I already had a blast with the free training mission that you can download from the online store, so if that is anything to go by, then the actual game is going to be at least as entertaining, if not more.

@BlueOcean I'd think the Horizon 4 Bond stuff is a new license purchased for that game, but that's a good point, it did include "classic" content including Brosnan's Bond's car, so that era licensing is still available. I wonder if it's worth the probably exorbitant cost of the licensing now that the film it ties to is almost considered "retro" at this point. Selling to N64 Rare fans surely wouldn't justify the cost...could the Golden Eye brand appeal to a new audience, or would it have to be a spiritual remake using something like Quantum of Solace just to appeal to the broader market the license fee would require? Golden Eye remains one of the best Bond films (Sorry, Connery) but it's almost forgotten these days given the short stint Brosnan got in the role.

It probably at this point might come down to how much Rare itself really wants to push on MS to make it, and how they can make a market case for it to justify the expense. Of course Rare's the all SoT, all the time team for now, with Battletoads taking the rest of their time, so it might be a while.

@DarthNocturnal MGM will take money from anyone willing to pay. They don't care what they do with it But between them and Broccoli's ego, the Bond license is quite costly. MS is at least in their good graces though with Forza...

Hmm, Absolution and Blood money are great games (and the free Blood Money is nice) but with 1 & 2 being the modern take on the series, I do wonder if this is just Squeenix trying to milk IOI's more current success with the scraps they got from the split. Why play full price remasters of the older less dynamic stealth games when the same creator is making newer, more refined content still? It's not like it's an abandoned series, the newest one is 9 weeks old. I love remasters, but....

@ThanosReXXX Well, the holiday sales are a great time to buy Especially the $10 and below content. Hitman was a guilty pleasure I wanted at launch and couldn't justify....half price on a new game...I'll take it

Switch: That's a good list. But what about XC2 & Torna? 2019 of course has FE, Yoshi, DxM, Animal Crossing, Pokemon, maybe Metroid or Bayonetta, probably DQ11, SMT5....it's a pretty packed year.

Hitman 2...I played Hitman "1" last year on PS and got really pulled into it. Stealth games tend to get tedious but Hitman has a magic formula with the ability to change disguises and all that keeps it always engaging, and very well designed environments and scenarios. I hear Hitman 2 isn't a revolution but more of the same with slightly refined details....and that's not a bad thing! Except it will be prettier on the X this time. I wanted the remastered Hitman 1 levels too but that's listed as not available and is an utter mess of a DLC. The only mission I didn't like in 1 was the farm in the US. It felt too "Far Cry" and I didn't enjoy it much. But the other missions were all exotic and wonderful. In a way, that's the "real" 007 series at this point, just without the license

NEStalgia

ThanosReXXX

@NEStalgia Yeah, in essence, it's indeed more of the same, but it's so entertaining, that fans of the series don't care, and newcomers might also come to find that this is one of the more entertaining and diversified stealth games around.

As far as acquiring Switch games goes, I'm really going to pace myself here, because between the Switch and the Xbox One, there's just too much on offer, if I dove in and got all of it. Couldn't even afford to, seeing as the list of wanted titles for both systems is quite long, and I'll probably add some more titles in the coming year...
(Yay, back log)

No, I'll just take it easy, and get what I want eventually, over the course of the coming years. I haven't even got that much time to play games anyways, so it's mostly reserved for the weekends, and sometimes a quick hour or so in the evening on week days, but with the more addictive games it's pretty hard to stick to just an hour or so, which doesn't make for a smart move on week days, especially if there's a work day following.

I'm kind of having to go cold turkey, after having been able to binge-game til 5 or 6am during the holidays, so now I'm going to have to drastically dial that back to every day levels...

On a side note: Nintendo should have taken a leaf out of Microsoft's book, concerning eShop purchases.
Last week, I linked my PayPal account to my Nintendo account, thinking I could then buy games in the same way as on the Xbox, but after just having tried to buy Golf Story, I found out that I first have to buy those stupid points cards again (edit: albeit in the form of digital funds, but still: one or two steps too many, Nintendo)...

This should probably go in that "It's 2019, Nintendo... " thread...

@NEStalgia But the remaster has been done by Rare already. Anyway, when I talk about Rare is because they own the N64 game (except the James Bond IP) but not because they must be the ones to develop a remaster or remake. If it's the cancelled 360 remaster I guess sales would be decent, if they or another Microsoft studio (considering Microsoft owns Rare) makes a remake I think sales would be surprisingly high. You don't need to know the original film to buy a new fancy thing. How many remakes do people buy ignoring the original source! Crash Bandicoot N.sane Trilogy (my first Crash game), Spyro Reignited Trilogy (my first Spyro game), Resident Evil Remake (my first Resident Evil game)… New kids love Mario and weren't born when Super Mario Bros. launched. I think I weren't born either. Pierce Brosnan was just the guy on the game cover for me, I watched the film years later (and I loved it). About royalties, I don't think Microsoft paid a fortune for including James Bond in Forza Horizon 4 so something can be worked out. I think MGM cares about the "spin-off" qualities, not about how much money they are making with it. They must be realistic. A video game remake is not a Hollywood AAA film. You are saying the opposite but I don't believe so after Forza Horizon 4. You admit that the deal wasn't good with Activision because of the poor reviews, not because of the money, right? If James Bond is not everywhere must be because they care more about his reputation than about making money anytime anywhere.

Banjo-

NEStalgia

@ThanosReXXX Not sure about the EU eshop, but in the US eShop you don't have to buy points cards. When you check out it will just ask "do you want to add $10, $25, $50, $75, or, at the top is a "only required amount" button which just bills you same as MS and Sony. MS just added a shopping cart last week, though (works for X1 games but not 360/OG games, though), and Nintendo hasn't, but otherwise you should be able to just bill it right to PP without weird card value purchases. Unless EU is different. If so, Reggie got it right and we can blame NoE

@BlueOcean if the films are anything to go by, MGM stopped caring about Bond's reputation decades ago.....

NEStalgia

Banjo-

@NEStalgia To be honest I haven't watched many James Bond films. The first one I watched was Goldeneye 007 because of the game and I really loved it, it is so faithful to the game LOL. I watched a few more but not many.

@NEStalgia Yeah, it's not literally like buying points cards (see the edit I added), but in your eShop account, you do have to manually select adding funds, and then select PayPal, or whatever option you desire, which is why I said it is two steps too much. On Xbox, it's just clicking buy and you're done, which is how it should be.

'The console wars are like boobs: Sony and Microsoft fight over which ones look the nicest and Nintendo's are the most fun to play with.'

ThanosReXXX

@Octane Not so, unless you have credit, which I didn't, so I first had to go into my eShop account, select to add funds, and then go to the page to be able to select a game and buy it.

On the Xbox, there's no such nonsense. Nintendo's way is indirect, and it really makes me wonder what the hell the use was of being able to link my PayPal account, since it doesn't work without first adding credits manually. The whole point/ease of using PayPal is that transferring money from one place to another, is handled by PayPal, relieving the user of such trivialities...

EDIT:
And what's more, is that they only have fixed amounts, so there's no option to just pay the actual price of a game either, meaning I would have to add 20 euros to buy a game that costs 12, just because the only other option is adding 10 euros, which is insane and archaic. They should get with the times already.
