So we subscribed to the EA access thing on Xbox. Being able to play through all the Dragon Ages and Mass Effects and Dead Spaces for 5 bucks a month isn't too shabby. That mixed with game pass is really a generous offering of "free" games.

Also, Celeste is a fun little game. It's a super well made game, and I'm glad the developers have seen such success.

Going through Rare Replay, banjo aside, I feel like most of these games, unless you played them "in their time" really don't hold up well. The controls are just so horrible on so many of them. Banjo is "modern-ish enough" to still work (but even that gets iffy at times.) Conker 64 is an unplayable garbage heap if you're not already familiar with it. I loved the characters and world but was really bummed that I"d never subject myself to that horrid gameplay control......but I've discovered the OG XB remake of Conker is available and X Enhanced! That makes me quite happy now!

N&B is just stunning and way cooler than I'd remembered it on the X. I'm impressed with Viva Pinata...it's nothing like I expected it to be. But it's oddly pleasant to play!

I do have a weird problem with the main RRP menu though. All the games that have their own 360 version won't launch from the RRP main game....it says they're not installed even though they are. And I made sure to install the "Rare Replay" tagged ones instead of the untagged ones. Weird.

Banjo-

@NEStalgia You are not supposed to install games, Rare Replay install them for you, you probably were playing around with the Xbox and the downloads as usually. I found Conker's Bad Fur Day a joy to play on Rare Replay and I did not played it back in the day. It can get brutally difficult at the end but it has checkpoints. It's also Xbox One S-enhanced (like the other N64 games) because it runs at 1080p and smoother frame rate and it's also the most impressive N64 game ever created visually, which is made more evident in HD. Yes, as I said many times, Viva Piñata was the biggest and nicest surprise for me too, the more I played it the more I liked it. Happy 2019, in between!

@BlueOcean Hmm, in my case when I bought RRP, my "ready to install" tab listed RRP itself, and two separate versions of each game, the RRP badged version, and the non-RRP badged version, so there were a ton of tiles in the "ready to install" tab. So I went through and installed RRP itself, and each of the "RRP badged" versions of the 360 games (the non-RRP versions still show in the "ready to install" tab though...) But the RRP menu still thinks it's not installed (not a big deal, I just run it separately, but just a slight sadness at not being able to use the cool menu for them.) Maybe it wants the non-RRP badged one? I doubt uninstalling will help unless maybe I uninstall everything and start with just RRP again. It's definitely clunky, even if RRP does it itself, if it leaves 16+ tiles in your "ready to install" menu.

It's also possible it messed something up because I'd already bought Kameo separately and had the non-RRP badged version installed, I guess.

Hmm...Conker in 1080? Hmm, when I run it from RRP I get a small letterboxed window inside a border like for the arcade games that doesn't use even the full height of the screen. Is there a way to get 1080p full screen at least in 4:3 that uses the screen height?

For me it's the controls and camera that made it problematic, not so much the appearance. Conker moves hyperactive like a squirrel and is kind of hard to control. I just found out about the OG XBox remake though, so I'm pretty excited about a remaster! Definitely buying that! It could be that I skipped that whole era of console platformers so I never developed muscle memory for handling it. I jumped from SNES to PC where things control fluid with mice, back to X360/PS3/Wii where things were "modern" already.

Viva Pinata reminds me of the kind of thing that would have been on PC in the late 90's. It was really a leap ahead to manage to put something like that on console, on the 360 no less! I think that will be my springtime game.

Happy 2019!

In my honest opinion, the Xbox One and its previous consoles don't have a lot of impressive games. All they have are shooters and other crud. They don't have many JRPGs. That's what I don't like about the Xbox and its previous and current models, they lack good games and JRPGs.

Now the PS4 and Nintendo Switch have a great library of games, including JRPGs. I used to like the Xbox and the 360, but due to lack of games from Japan and horrible manufacture problems with the Xbox 360 (AKA the Red Rings of Death), I gave my Xbox 360 away. PS4 and Nintendo Switch have a lot of great games (including JRPGs), the 3DS does too, but the PS4 and Switch have better games. That's why I like the PS4 and Switch better than any incarnation of Xbox consoles. Forgive me for posting this.

@Alantor28 3DS is the king of JRPGs, hands down. Playstation (in general) is the runner up, but a lot of the JRPGs tend to be more obscure or anime based games, visual novels, etc. The really really Japanese stuff, that has only a very limited Western audience at all. Older Sword Art games etc. Switch will likely be the new king of JRPGs given it's easy #1 status in Japan.

But it's also kind of an old cliche that XBox only has shooters. With the exception of less mainstream JRPGs and visual novels, and perhaps the less mainstream fighting games, it probably has the broadest library of the consoles. I mean it gets nearly all the 3rd party games PS gets, but with the benefit of backward compatibility to the huge library of 7th gen games PS4 misses out on. If you trim it down to just what's unique to each console, it probably has the less unique to it. OTOH if I tally across all 3 consoles the total number of "unique to one console" games compared to my total game library, it's probably 1/4 of it. MAYBE 1/3. Including all Nintendo games.

If I look at the 3 current gen consoles, my X1X has, probably the most diverse library out of the 3, spanning 3 generations....4 actually if we include Dreamcast stuff on it), with all genres pretty well represented. Switch comes in second with the mix of third parties and Nintendo games. And finally my PS4 which is more or less "just a JRPG/VN/Fighting box + Sony games." Granted I now have a lot of JRPGs/VNs for it. But even that is largely made of older games (Dark Cloud, etc.) plus things that have gone to or are coming to X1 and/or Switch.

I happen to love all genres. And I love both JRPGs and WRPGs. Not surprising the biggest genre group on my XBox is RPGs. So big that I had to split it between WRPGs and JRPGs because I had too many for one group. WRPG is a broad genre including Diablo, Fable 1-3, Witcher, Skyrim, Fallout, etc. But for JRPG, off the top of my head (including what will be on the console by end of 2019, including some things I already have or will get on PS or Switch):

World of FF, FFVII, FFIX, FFX/X-2, FFXII-Zodiac, FFXIII, XIII-2, XIII-Lightening Returns (Note that X1 is the only current gen platform you can get these 3 JRPGs on!), FFXV, FF Type 0

Then there's:
Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet (about as anime as you get (but PS4 has the rest of the series...) , Ys Origin, Dark Souls 1-3 (technically JRPGs), MHWorld (technically an RPG), Dragons Dogma (very Western design but it's a Japanese game...), Kingdoms of Amalur, SaGa trilogy (retro), Blue Dragon (XB exclusive), KH3, Vesperia, Shining Resonance.

Then there's Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey, X1 compatible X360 exclusive RPGs from FF creator Sakaguchi.

I'm probably forgetting some. PS (and maybe Swithch?) get Dragon Quest and Persona/SMT. They have a lot of legacy games like Dark Cloud, older Sword Art Online games, etc. And tons of visual novels, things like The Witch and the Hundredknight etc that won't end up elsewhere. More NIS support.

Most of the modern JRPGs go to PS and XBox. Older ones are glued to PS. But more and more of the library is shared. The bigger difference lies in which classic content is available, where XBox makes 360 and XB era games available, and PS has "Classics" lines of some legacy Japanese games (though arguably not terribly many of them are especially good games...), as well as more support from current niche (NIS) Japanese studios (migrating toward Switch more and more.)

If buying a PURELY JRPG/VN focused system, yeah, 3DS/Switch would be my first pick, PS4 second and XB last, there's less unique content in those genres on XB. But it's far from non-existent, and the myth that "XBox only has shooters" is really outdated. It's arguably the most balanced library of all 3 systems. It's just that it doesn't delve as deep into the JRPG or fighting genres as PS and Nintendo, while still representing the genres well.

Personally Switch is my go-to system due to its convenience and the magic of Nintendo games. PS4 tends to be my "older JRPG and a few exclusives" system. And XBox is "everything else that comes to both." Tekken I've moved from XB to PS4 though....Bamco can't bring themselves to support X1 properly for it, even though they did a great job with Soul Calibur VI on X1. And of course SFV and King of Fighters is PS4.

IMO Square announcing FF is now multiplat across the board dropped the hammer on the "PS for JRPGs" illusion. It took most of the "must have classics" RPGs and put them evenly on all systems. For the moment, excepting things like Dissidia, and FFXIV Stormblood (MMO), XBox actually has more FF games than PS4 thanks to the 13 trilogy being only on X1 due to back compat.

Though if you're really into classic JRPGs a used PS2 that plays PS1 games is probably the optimum choice. Most of the great PS4 stuff is really PS2 stuff anyway.

@NEStalgia Oh I believe you, I was partly joking. I bought the game at launch and the non-tagged versions were released afterwards. The original Rare Replay releases have the Rare Replay tag so keep those only. Don't worry about save files, there aren't separate save files. Let me know if it works. If you want to get rid of the "ready to install games" you can do that, press the Menu button and select Hide from list. You can always redownload them on the store if you search them. I know I can launch every game from Rare Replay so it's possible, let's find a solution for you.

By the way, question about Final Fantasy XV Comrades. I have it in Ready to install but I haven't installed it because it used to be included with Final Fantasy Royal Edition (still is, but now it's a separate download). So my question is, is Comrades still included in the Final Fantasy XV file? Because I don't want to have Comrades duplicated as it is a waste of storage, you know what I mean?

I am not the biggest fan of games like farm simulators, Animal Crossing, etc. but Viva Piñata is one of the best games I've ever played, it's so rewarding, relaxing, nice... Relaxing but not boring.

I'll have a look at your vertical resolution question (Conker's Bad Fur Day) because I can't check at the moment.

NEStalgia wrote:

@BlueOcean Hmm...Conker in 1080?

Yes.

Where Xbox 360 remasters were available, Xbox One's shiny new backwards compatibility functionality was utilised to excellent effect, while the rest of the titles employed direct emulation of the original consoles, with no actual remaking or remastering in play - though the 1080p resolution boost was clearly worthwhile.

Rare's Microsoft debut - Grabbed by the Ghoulies - is treated to an Xbox One-specific 1080p60 conversion, seemingly ported over from the original source.

So basically all games in Rare Replay are 1080p, even the Spectrum ones and Grabbed by the Ghoulies is 1080p60fps instead of 480p30fps (a remaster). The 60fps is heaven-sent, completing that game is quite tricky - but I loved it too. The 360 games were the first 360 backwards compatibility games so typically 720p as you know. Please note that the performance videos in the article are dated, NOW Nuts & Bolts run better on Xbox One than on 360. I noticed Nuts & Bolts (and other games) even smoother on Xbox One X.

Yes, but they don't have things from Japan. Japan makes better games than the West. I am a fan of Japan and their games. Hence why I think PS4 and Switch are better than Xbox because the two systems have games from Japan while Xbox and its past and present consoles have Western games that only cater to FPS and hack and slash fans. Rare Replay is a good game, but it doesn't scratch that Japan itch.

Sorry for saying this, but I personally feel that Japan and its game studios make better games than Microsoft and any Xbox company related to them.

The PS4 seems like a better fit for you. Nothing wrong with that. Personally I find most JRPGs to be boring, derivative grindfests full of tired tropes, but thats just me.

@NEStalgia In the imaginary words of the semi-immortal, and slightly deranged Titan that I adopted the name from:
"Fear not, little ones, for I have returned, and all will be good in the Universe again..."

If you were living over here, I would inquire if you still own all your limbs and connected appendages, seeing as the Dutch have the rather unique habit of lighting their own fireworks, instead of having a single, national event that you just go to and watch how actual pyro-technical professionals light something up...

It actually did result in quite a few casualties, as it usually does, each year, but they keep doing it regardless.
And the amounts of money spent on it: absolutely crazy. Oh, well it does make for a rather unique experience,
and I kinda like it. The watching it, that is. I'm not crazy enough to spend money on stuff that is just literally going to go up in smoke in a mere matter of minutes...

Anyway, best wishes and here's hoping your luck will improve, even if only ever so slightly. Then again: anything would be an improvement, right?
And if things stay the same, it would at least appear as if you've got the funds to support all the mishaps...
(sorry, couldn't help myself, there)

Well, 2018 ended, so it was time to buy another console. And no: not the X, although that will still be bought at some point, but I just HAD to get a Switch first. Got a bundle with a 64GB card, pouch and screen protector, and Breath of the Wild to go with it, but funnily enough, I ended up installing a lot of free to play games and demos on it, and after having done the first bit of Warframe, I ultimately binge-gamed my way, or more accurately:
I still AM binge-gaming my way through Fallout Shelter.

What an annoyingly simple and addictive game that is.
But it's probably still better than the main series' latest installment...

@ThanosReXXX You think that's a unique thing of the Dutch? You haven't been stateside in a while have you? The 4th primarily and New Years secondarily neighborhoods sound like warzones of tons of people lighting fireworks, usually over other people's roofs. Much of it is illegal or "kinda" illegal, but of course, you call the cops and they show up an hour or two after it stopped "nope, don't see anything here" (insert Don Knotts voice.)

Meh, one year of splurging on video games and I'm suddenly "rich" No, I just do nothing but stay at home and play video games and go to work, so I dump the budget on that...not like it could buy anything more useful for the same money here Plus that's like 8 years of games

Congrats on the Switch! (It's about time! ) You're in for a real treat with BotW!

I haven't played Shelter, but pretty much anything is better than '76. Heck even listening to my hard drives is more fun than '76....

@BlueOcean Nope, I have all the Rare Replay tags, but it still won't find them. I imagine if I reinstall it all maybe it will work, but it doesn't make sense to redownload it all if it's working (more or less) so I'll probably leave it as-is. It's annoying but not a problem. I did give Ghoulies a shot though. Wow that's GREAT, and looks great too! I never expected that from it. It reminds me a little of the arcade version of Luigi's Mansion in some ways....it's really clever (and predates Luigi's Mansion.)

FF Comrades: That's interesting, for me it automatically downloaded it like it was a patch, but installed separately. I'm not sure why it's being handled like a separate game. I wonder if it has something to do with the new fast download/piecemeal downloading stuff they're rolling out? I'm not actually sure if it's still inside XV, or if it's like Rare Replay and just runs it externally now.

Nuts & Bolts really is gorgeous and smooth on the X.....it makes it really fun to play again!

@Alantor28 I don't think anyone will say that XBox (an American console) has more games from Japan than Nintendo (a Japanese company that leads sales in Japan), but the gap is rapidly closing with Playstation, as Playstation abandoned Japan and became more or less an American console as well. More and more the same Japanese games are on both platforms if they're on one. Take a look at the focus from Square Enix on FFXV, FFXIII, bringing all of FF over to XBox (and Switch), KH3 on XBox, etc. Capcom unveiled DMC5 at XBox's stage. Nier Automata is most definitely a better looking/running game on X1X versus PS4. Soul Calibur VI, DoA6 seem to have a 1X focus and should run best on X. Japan buys Nintendo and basically only Nintendo now, but Japanese developers seem to be really paying a lot more attention to Microsoft now as MS courts them and Sony takes them for granted while chasing the Western money.

NEStalgia

And best wishes to all of you other crazies as well.
No exceptions: fire and forget, water under the bridge and all that...

It's a new year, baby, and there's plenty of clean slates to go around. Cheers.

@NEStalgia Well, unique enough apparently, that two American/Canadian comedians made a video about it, that's even trending on the web, apparently. But yeah, I do know to some extent: I've seen enough crazy videos about people launching rockets from certain anatomical places they're not supposed to be launched from, and what not, but believe me: it's nothing like what they have over here.

On the day before New Year's Eve, the fireworks started at around 5.30 - 6pm (the children are legally allowed to start then, midnight is reserved for all the drunk adults), and it lasted until around 3am the next morning. All across the country, and practically without pause (leaving the city streets covered with thick patches of red paper, ashes and semi-burnt cardboard boxes, the next day)...

Yep, truly nothing like it anywhere...

Fallout Shelter is fun, if you like management sims. It's more or less in the vein of Theme Park, except with a side-on, sliced through underground bunker view...

It just runs externally now. They were quite clear that it was just an attempt to get the MMO-fans playing it, who didn't want to bother with the main game.
That's almost definitely not gonna happen though. It's not well fleshed out enough to compete with other MMOs.

It's dangerous to go alone! Stay at home.
