Bit of bad news and I don't want certain people to lead the narrative on this one so I'll keep it simple:

Pretty much everyone ITK is saying Scalebound is toast. Apparently a very troubled development that didn't meet a number of deadlines and now the plug has been pulled. Kamiya is apparently gutted, this was a game he wanted to make for a long, long time, starting as a prototype on the Wii.

On a personal level I'm gutted, was definitely the game I was looking forward to the most on Xbox One.

Bad day for Microsoft, Platinum and the 'AAA' industry as a whole as far as big new IP are concerned, let's not be immature and act like Microsoft are the only ones that do this either.

beep happens.

Yikes.

Scalebound is enduring a 'troubled' development - http://kotaku.com/rumors-swirl-that-scalebound-is-in-trouble-...

Sea of Thieves and Scalebound are two of my most anticipated Xbox One games this year...

:EDIT: What's going on over there?!

Lionhead Studio (who created the Fable series) was defunct last April, and so was Good Science (Kinect Adventures and Fun Labs) and Press Play (Max: The Curse of Brotherhood and Kalimba) too.

You also have Twisted Pixel Games (The Maw and 'Splosion Man) asking Microsoft if they could become an independent studio again, after a disagreement over their ID@Xbox program policies.

That's three studio closures in eight months, and one asked to become independent again... and now it looks like Scalebound is facing the chop.

That's a shame to hear. The worst part of it all; couple of years of development down the drain. It really was shaping up to be something unique on the Xbox and by the looks of it, Platinum's most ambitious game. Maybe another dev could pick this project up and fund the development, like how Nintendo funded Bayonetta 2.

If The Last Guardian was being developed on a Microsoft machine it would never ever seen the light of day.

After today's news, the line-up this year is Crackdown 3, Halo Wars 2 (in February) and Sea of Thieves, along with a small handful of indie games such as Below, Cuphead and Tacoma.

Granted, Forza Motorsport 7 is inevitably coming out this year, but it's a fairly tame selection of games all the same.

@Peek-a-boo Don't. This is really bad news for Platinum and we should be more worried about their future than List WarsTM or ridiculous hypothesising about how awesome Sony are for releasing a game after a 9 year wait.

Just don't. Here's a great post from Neogaf at the situation at Platinum now:

"I imagine this will be an issue for Platinum.

1.) They have over 200 staff, presumably at least half of which were making Scalebound.
2.) Nier Automata is about to go gold, and Yoko Taro makes it sound like it's not going into sequel mode right away.
3.) Activision killed off their licensed game division, so that's not an option anymore.
4.) They have the Gran Blue Fantasy project and Lost Order, but I'm assuming that was going to take on Nier's staff given Kamiya wasn't attached to it."

Of course this could easily be Evil Micro$oft and entirely their decision but as I said in my OP it sounds like a game that went through hell and Microsoft apparently supported it through at least a few missed deadlines.

But hey how 'bout that The Last Guardian PS3 exclusive? I hope those people who bought a PS3 based off of that announcement loved Resistance: Fall of Man.

Good ol' Sony...

@Octane No other developer can, it's a Microsoft IP. Platinum made a deal with Microsoft to develop the game but the copyright belongs to Microsoft, like how Bayonetta is owned entirely by SEGA.

Also Kamiya is apparently taking a break from his job and seeking mental care such is his devastation.

So no any potential "Bayonetta 3 Switch confirmed!" or "Sony to the rescue!" is pipe dream stupidness at this point. Some might say the writing has been on the wall for a while now but it's out in the open once this is confirmed- Platinum are in trouble.

And imaging The Last Guardian's fate as a Microsoft game in light of all this is incredibly narrow minded and childish. There are bigger things to be worried about.

To be fair, I don't recall any of Scalebound's pre-release footage looking any good, so maybe this really was for the best? I mean, the fact that the question is left open to the public is probably better PR than releasing a product the public was dissatisfied with, right?

That makes me butthurt

@Octane just to be sure.

I genuinely, genuinely only wanted to pass on the message but suspected people (not you specifically I haven't even been on this thread enough to know you frequent it) might be immature and use this as an opportunity to take a totally one sided shot at a company without thinking of the bigger picture. I thought that was perfect clear. But you couldn't help yourself and I hope that the further posts I made on Platinum's situation as well as Kamiya have brought some perspective to you. I am still completely flummoxed at the The Last Guardian comment and you expect people to believe you're wholly sincere after it.

Also IDK what's so bad about Neogaf and quoting an excellent post about Platinum lol.

Well, that's a shame. I feel sorry for Kamiya and Platinum.

Between Activision's tight budgets and time constraints leading to the disastrous Korra and TMNT games and now this, the studio is in a rough patch. They still make great games though. Bayo 2 is among the best of the genre, and NieR Automata looks fantastic.

I think Platinum bit off more than they could chew.

Also I could have easily turned this into an immature "I told you so" post because, as you can see if you go to page 100 of this very thread, I was not for the first (and unfortunately not the last) time absolutely pilfered (IDK if that's the right word) for suggesting this game might be subject to Microsoft interference and that it might tarnish the product as a whole. Now I for one think that taking an opportunity as worrisome as this and turning it into a "Look how smart I am guys plz liek and suscrib for more hot factz" to be immature in the circumstances so I didn't. It wouldn't have been half as immature as Console Wars but I'm glad I refrained and I hope that proves that I held no grudges nor had an ulterior motives with my post.

At the very least I didn't insult someone. 5 times.

Hey, while I'm playing devil's advocate:

Peek-a-boo wrote:

p.s. Why don't you go and join NeoGAF if that's all you ever do on here, making reference(s) to them?

I'm pretty sure he's only quoting them because a few members of actual Video game studios post there. You may as well be telling people who keep quoting Twitter to stay on Twitter instead of bringing that trash here - Which is totally something that should be happening, btw. **** Twitter...but if that actually happened, we would be missing out on the occasional nugget of information. I can't say whether or not that makes it all worth it, I'm just saying: NeoGAF is a hell-hole that few come out sane from. Sure, Shinion does bring it up quite a bit, but you don't tell a Vet to go back to No-Man's Land just because he keeps telling war-stories. Perhaps it's just his own way of dealing with the pain?

@CanisWolfred Thanks for that, though I don't see why it's playing "devil's advocate" to defend someone quoting an excellent post from Neogaf lol.

But anyway yep that official cancellation sucks big time man. Poor Kamiya

P.S. I kinda still want a response @Octane or any mod really. 5. Times.

Too bad. I was genuinely looking forward to this...

@DarthNocturnal I disagree. The Last Guardian was rumored to be cancelled multiple times over its hellish development cycle, but it stuck in there and now we finally have it. We'll never get that chance with Scalebound.

To be honest, I was expecting Crackdown 3 to be cancelled, not Scalebound. For their sake, I hope it isn't next.

@Ralizah On a different system years and years and years later. We get it, Sony 'won' this time, getting game is better than not getting game.

But people please in general let's not do this. Sony have cancelled games. Nintendo have cancelled games. EA have cancelled games. And yes today, Microsoft have announced a cancelled game. Sony have also closed down multiple studios this generation, so have Microsoft. Sony played a significant part in the shady at best marketing for No Man's Sky, allowing Sean Murray to show a game of at E3 that was anything but the final product, I can safely say now after playing it, and it was voted by NEOGAF as the biggest fail of the year. Nintendo released Starfox Zero and basically wasted everyone's time because Miyamoto wanted to beep over the Wii U Gamepad.

Bad things happen. Every company makes mistakes, every company does things people don't like and goes though bad spells of publicity, but that absolutely should not be people's focus here, if you'll look at my comments they put things into perspective.

I feared things would go badly but I wasn't ready for that ridiculous TLG comparison. Now after this piece of news proved me right (paaaaage 100 yo) I'm gonna go and make another wacky prediction. Y'all are not ready for this one.

Sony will cancel a videogame in the future. Duh-duh-duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuh!

And in completely unrelated news how about that new trailer for Dreams coming out in 2014? Or was it 2015?

So yeah please stop it with the stupid comparisons. Pleeeeeeease.
