Here's a what-if scenario for you. What if Sega actually maintained the Dreamcast, and Microsoft doesn't bother with the console business, which leads to Sega still being in the hardware race? Here's how I think it would go down.

6th Gen:
-Sega releases a DVD add-on for the Dreamcast to combat the PS2, offered as a standalone purchase for $59.99, or a system bundle $199.99
-Sega launches a Dreamcast pro controller with a second analog stick and 2 extra buttons.
-Dreamcast gets some PS2/Gamecube multiplatform games, but mainly relies on Sega's 1st party lineup
-Rare would still be with Nintendo, and continue release games like Banjo and Conker
-Sonic Heroes, Billy Hatcher, Monkey Ball, etc. would all be 1st party Dreamcast games
-Sega releases a slimmer, sleeker Dreamcast with Pro controller standard, and built-in DVD support
-Yakuza is released late in the system's life cycle

7th Gen:
-Sega teases it's next gen system at E3 2003, says will be discussed next year
-Sega unveils the Sega Spectrum at E3 2004, plans for a Holiday 2004 release
-Hardware wise, the Spectrum is a slightly more powerful OG Xbox with modern PC shaders
-Full color, backlit VMU size screen built-in to the controller
-Spectrum is a huge success at launch and becomes the lead platform for 3rd party developers
-SegaNet online service is outsourced to Sega of America, becomes leading online service
-In typical Sega fashion, the Spectrum is outclassed by the monstrously powerful PS3 2 years later
-Like Nintendo, Sega wouldn't pamper or become slaves to 3rd parties, but would make sure their platform is easy to develop for.
-Nintendo's Wii though weaker and lacking HD, shares similar hardware with the Spectrum and recieves most of it's 3rd party games.
-PS3 proves too expensive and difficult for 3rd parties to develop for, as they slowly abandon it for the Spectrum and Wii.
-PS3 suffers from long software Droughts and poor sales as a result with only Metal Gear Solid remaining.
-Square Enix jumps into bed with Sega, and makes Final Fantasy exclusive to the Spectrum
-Sega and Nintendo compete on a 1st party and hardware level, as they try to 1-up each other with add-ons, innovative games, and 3rd party exclusives
-Sega pimps Valkyria Chronicles and Shenmue 3 as Advance Wars and Zelda killers respectively.
-Sega continues it's Dreamcast trend of constantly pumping out weird, quirky games, Yakuza becomes a popular series.
-Sonic games are of better quality, with the effort and polish rivaling the likes of Mario Galaxy
-Sega releases the Spectrum Wand in 2008 to compete with the Wii remote
-Visual Concepts becomes Sega's flagship western studio competing with Retro Studios and Naughty Dog. Focuses on Gritty Mature games and Sports titles for a Western audience
-Spectrum goes on to sell 94.7 million units worldwide with the Wii and 100.2 million, and the PS3 at 35 million.

8th Gen:
-Sega unveils it's new Acksys platform at a special event in 2011, plans a release for Holiday that year
-Acksys is a hardware agnostic platform similar to Android, runs on a variety of devices from handhelds, to set-top boxes, Smart-TV's, and tablets.
-Sega ditches optical media for an NAND flash memory format available to developers in 16, 32, and 64GB capacities for same price as DVD and Blu-ray.
-Acksys devices can be outsourced to various hardware manufacturers including Samsung, LG, and Nvidia
-Capcom promises unprecedented support for Acksys, with Monster Hunter becoming a flagship exclusive
-Sega unveils initial 1st party lineup including Sonic Generations, Virtua Fighter 6, and Fragmented, a JRPG about a girl with Dissociative Identity Disorder from the Valkyria Chronicles team.
-Sega becomes market leader and changes the landscape of the console market
-Nintendo quickly adapts in 2013 with Crosstar, a platform that Crosses devices, and play locations
-Sony unveils PS4, shown to be a traditional, single device platform hoping to be easier to develop for than the PS3
-PS4 is percived as outdated and archaic, sells poorly, discontinued after 2 years
-Sony files for bankruptcy, divides Sony Computer Entertainment Assets between Nintendo and Sega
-Nintendo, Sega, and Google battle in the Gaming OS wars with Acksys, Crosstar, and Android

That's pretty much what I think may happen, how do you think it may go down?
