I did not see any thread created specifically for Valve's Steam Deck console so here it is!

I personally really REALLY want this device to succeed but not for reasons like "to crush the Switch" or "to have Sony and Microsoft cry".

I want it to succeed because there are so much possibilities with it!

I want to play the following games in handheld mode:

1. Fallout 3 and NV
2. Fallout 4
3. Batman Arkham Series

And so MANY more!

Snatcher

I want to play all sorts of games in that handheld mode of its, Though I'm going to wait a little bit Just to see how it works out, if it get popular, and all that jazz.

@Zuljaras I agree.

I thinkI'm in the same group as you guys. It's not a day one for me, but if it's reliable and not as clunky as it looks I might grab one eventually. Probably when it gets a price cut.

Not going to lie. With all the buzz media outlets and the internet have been exuding, I would have thought this thread would have been more active!

It looks like a great idea and I'm definitely interested but right now I have enough on my gaming plate that this would just add so much to my backlog. If the price comes down after a year or 2 I might invest but sadly I just don't have the time to dedicate to it, a Nintendo Switch, Stadia games and Gamepass xCloud. I feel those 3 cover enough of the bases for me.

But i can see this being a success and hope it is. Competition in the handheld market can only be a good thing for everyone.

I see it as the first step in something potentially very cool however it seems very much non elegant right now both in design and in function. Hard to say without hands on experience but it seems heavy and uncomfortable which is not ideal for playing for a long time or for taking it out and about. Battery life is also way to short and the memory options leave a bit to be desired.

But this could be a very good foundation to build upon. It reminds me of the original Gameboy, a bit clunky but still good. But then we got the Gameboy colour and the Advance etc etc. Over time I can see this type of system growing to be very popular.

Maybe we could start some Steam Deck Pro rumours?

I'm the opposite. I think it's a great idea and I'm definitely interested BECAUSE I have a large Steam backlog and I know I tend to complete games when I have access to them on a portable device. Would also mean I'm less likely to re-buy stuff on the Switch I already have on PC just so I can have them on a portable device

@GrailUK ha maybe but I'd be more keen on a light version to be honest. With a portable system I'm not as interested in having the highest performance. I'd rather have a longer battery life and a sleeker, more comfortable design.

Maybe in 4 years they'll give it an OLED screen though lol

@skywake yep I can see your logic. I don't really have much of a catalogue of Steam games to start with. Never really used the platform. It's brilliant for people who have a big library already though. Much easier access to games.

I've pretty much gone the route of portability for the last 4 years of gaming. I use Switch in handheld a lot and I'm the last 2 years I've been using Stadia to get access to big AAA games the Switch could never run and can play them on my phone, laptop, work pc or TV. Convenience is key.

I am interested in this for one reason only and that would be to make it a portable Xbox. There's times I want to play my Gamepass games but especially now the TV is in use. This would be perfect for times like that. I am not a big PC gamer, that's why I have consoles like the Xbox so I have no interest in Steam. I am sure most games Steam offers I have elseware.

If the Steam Deck is even only mildly successful, Nintendo would be under pressure to release a Switch Pro rather sooner than later. That's what I'm hoping and waiting for.

I'm not rushing out to buy this thing immediately but what it brings to the table in terms of handheld gaming is practically unheard of even in a world where we have something like Switch

It's going to run all native Steam games including those on Windows, PC applications in general which means other storefronts like GOG, Epic and the Microsoft Store are supported for their exclusive games and Game Pass, and probably a treasure trove of emulators all the way up to possibly the PS3. In addition to that, with how Microsoft and Sony are now both putting games on PC and specifically on Steam, you can use this thing as both a portable Xbox and PlayStation console as well

It's seriously cool stuff even if the price is steep to match.

Also as a MegaTen fan it's going to be really funny if this thing pushes out better framerates and performance in general for SMTIII HD and Persona 5 Strikers than either Switch port lol

Many of us were in the PC thread. I'll give my thoughts again.

This is amazing and I have a 512 model reserved. I'm massive fan of handheld gaming and as a Win 2 owner, I've done handheld PC before. This is not a new concept. The difference this time is it's Valve, and it has Gyro. And it's priced better.

Just having Gyro and the Steam controller layout but with 2 analogs and 4 rear grip buttons is the dream realized. Portal 2 handheld was why I bought a Vita. By the time I got a Win 2 I had realized I can't play without Gyro in handheld. So close yet so far.

I do think a lot of people are gonna get this thing and then realize once they get it it's a cruise ship. And that's my biggest issue. It's heavier than a Switch and New 3DS combined. That's not gonna be comfy for holding long periods of time. I really hope they release a Lite version at some point. Trim down the size and weight. Even if the screen size has to shrink to 6" with a reduced bezel.

Battery life will also likely be 2 hrs for any demanding game which just isn't enough. Another reason why the Switch and Steamdeck just aren't the same. This isn't a slim, featherweight handheld you toss in the back pocket and can last you a while.

But, many games can be dialed back to 600p (close enough), 30 fps with low or medium settings to extend life to 3 hrs. And Portal 2 gets 4 hrs at 720p, 60 fps max settings. 6 hrs at 30 fps. So less demanding games will also get more.

Proton means most of my library runs at Native, Platinum or Gold ratings, but around 20% were silver, bronze or borked. Valve says they're working on it and I expect Proton to be improved significantly by launch, even more so by the time I get my system.

@TheFrenchiestFry
Persona 5 is "borked" in the Proton compatibility layer. Unless they fix that, or you install windows, it won't be running. Don't know about SMT3. But Idk why it would be funny. This thing is on par with a base PS4. I can't imagine any game that wouldn't run better.

@dionysos283
No it won't. By the time this thing even gets in the hand of most consumers it'll be mid to late 2022. This thing will be successful, hoping at least 5 million, but that's a drop in the bucket and it's not the same as Switch. This thing is a cruise ship. At 670 grams its over twice the weight of Switch Lite. It's not a "tuck in the pocket and go" kind of system. 67% heavier than even the OLED model, and several inches wider.

Nintendo isn't releasing a Pro. That ship has sailed. Next gen is only a few years away- that's when we'll see a jump from Nintendo. Even if by some miracle this device sold 15-20 million, and that somehow was enough to make Nintendo say oh, we have to respond, it would be next gen anyways. It takes years to plan hardware, source components, test the design.... it's too late for all that. Next gen is the next jump.
