I'll be honest: I'm so used to the iconic DualShock design that seeing the original PS1 controller is really weird.

Unless it comes with some rare games, I don't see myself buying it. I'm not a fan of this retro console trend. Just release these games on PS4 already!

@NEStalgia I've never seen anyone hold a controller like that. I just tried it and... yuck. That's awful. Besides being unnatural, the hands are supposed to be that high up on the controller. It has grips for a reason.

GameCube triggers weren't like normal triggers, either, but they're still the best I've ever used. The triggers on Xbox controllers are uncomfortable to use. I'm playing a video game, not carving a turkey! Comfort is paramount! And the DS4 has triggers that are very comfortable to use. In fact, the entire controller is designed to rest easily in hand as the analog sticks grip your thumb. I just wish Sony would "unlock" its gyrometer for use in normal games like you can on Steam, because, honestly, it's the best darn PC controller I've ever used, but they force you to stick to dual analog aiming on the actual console itself.

@Ralizah Isn't that up to the developer to add in gyro support? Don't get me wrong, there's a reluctance in Sony's own games too when it comes to gyro controls, but I don't think they purposely lock devs out of using it, right?

Ralizah

@Octane I didn't mean to imply they were stopping developers from utilizing them. And let's not forget that Gravity Rush 2, a first-party Sony game, made use of gyro.

The way Steam handles it, the gyro can be used by emulating mouse movement. Perhaps it would only work so universally on PC? I don't know if something similar could be achieved on console. Either way, the effect is that shooters are a lot more fun to play on PC.

I think it comes down to the entire culture surrounding Playstation, not just the developers. After all, gyro aiming was patched into DOOM and Wolfenstein 2 on Switch, and it's not uncommon to see motion controls scoffed at by the dual-analog fundamentalists.

@Ralizah Oh, I didn't know that was a thing. How does it feel? I can imagine that implementing it properly takes a lot of fine tuning, but maybe a sensitivity slider is all you need.

@Octane It's great! As good, or better, than the gyro aiming in Switch games like DOOM and BotW. I just turn up the hardware sensitivity, and dial down the mouse sensitivity in-game a bit. It works really well. DOOM is a blast to play at 120FPS with gyro aiming.

@Ralizah But...but...but.....it's the same controller design. They just glued analogs below in the open space and called it a day so as not to interfere with this existing design. Note the symmetry of the primary movement input directly parallel to the face buttons. Look at that perfection. Now that the analog stick has replaced the d-pad as the primary movement input, wouldn't it be great if we could have a controller that replicates the original vision of the Playstation? Oh wait, look at that, Nintendo and Microsoft did just that!! And so did Razer and Hori for Playstation, with Sony's approval! (But not for North America!)

Actually GCN triggers were a lot more like normal triggers than DualShock. Instead of long, they were wide, but they still had a cradling shape for the finger running the opposite direction. They still had a large angle of motion with a fairly linear pressure gradient, like conventional triggers. DS triggers are flat pads with increasing resistance but without a solid bottom when fully depressed. XBox triggers, the only complaint that might apply is sometimes they have too lengthy a traversal for their own good, which is why hair trigger lockouts are popular on the Elite and 3rd party premium controllers. The long throw is perfect for racing, but can get tiring when shooting. That's valid. But the actual trigger itself is an actual trigger, not a flat squishy mat without a solid end

Still, I dont' know what hands it supposedly rests easy in. I assumed it was small hands but @Tsurii says no. I'm not sure what physical traits make it work well. But it doesn't rest comfortably in the hands because it doesn't have enough handle length or thickness to actually hold. I end up doing the weird "wrap the pinky around the bottom of the handle" I do when supporting Switch as a handheld. Except a small controller doesn't really work well for that. Every generation I hope they'll finally fix the DS....but they never do. And you like it that way.

I'll give you gyros though. It's the only way to go in shooters, and PS denies it and XBox doesn't support it at all, so a blurry 240p Destiny 2 for Switch would still be superior to either other platform

Guy I am yet again worried about the noise levels of my console. This time the PS4 Pro. Is it OK to be a little noisy. I noticed that when playing God of War and when I am inside a building in Spider-Man.

I know that it is not supposed to be like Xbox One X but still. It is the latest revision!

NEStalgia

@Zuljaras If your PS4 Pro sounds like a dust buster just sucked in a marmalade tabby, good news: Your console is working as designed! Pro isn't as ungodly as the OG 'ERASER' PS4, and nothing compares to the PS3 Phat short of a gas pressure washer in pure dB, but yeah, the Pro can get kinda loud.

I just want to see if there are special games that make that worth $100. So far, only Tekken 3 seems to be a highlight, since you can't play the game on PSN

I don't think there's any answer to that that actually makes it worth the money. Nearly all games can be played on other platforms already.
It's purely a novelty item.

It's dangerous to go alone! Stay at home.

Octane

@Ralizah That's good to hear. I would love it if they implemented that system-wide.

@Zuljaras I don't know about the Pro, as I have an OG PS4 (and they say it's worse), but as long as it doesn't sound like it's literally going to take off, there's nothing wrong with the system. They can get loud during loading for example, but the fans shouldn't be blasting on full speed all the time. I haven't really noticed any noise when playing Spider-Man, but obviously, if you mute the TV you can hear the PS4 is turned on, and the fan is spinning.

Octane

Zuljaras

@Octane Exactly. I was too cough up in listening to my console instead of playing on it. I am obsessing over stupid things and forget to enjoy the consoles.

That was my mistake. I was playing with muted TV just to monitor the console fan/air sound.

My colleague even said that the One X could be heard when playing games like Injustice 2 and Forza. Not loud but it can be heard. I guess same goes for the PS4 Pro (just a little more noticeable).

@Zuljaras Seems plausible. Even my Wii has its loud moments. If you want a console that's completely silent, get an NES/SNES/N64 No moving parts at all. Though I have to say that I've never heard my GameCube either, it's a surprisingly silent and resilient little lunch box! Anyway, don't worry about it, your PS4 is probably fine!

@Dezzy Remember Nathan Drake at the beginning of Uncharted 4 with Crash Bandicoot? The Classic is meant for all the Nate Drake's of the world. People who would never buy a PS4 or Switch and would never buy a $20 game let alone a $60 game. Now they get to play games they heard about 20 years ago for one quick $99 purchase. These minis are a dismal value if you're actually buying full priced consoles but they're an impulse buy for people that want to "see what all that was about back then" or quick relive a bygone era as a cheap novelty, but have no intention of investing $350+ to play one game. For existing console owners, it's a novelty item. But mostly it's for that non-console-owning market.

@Zuljaras Even the Switch can be heard at times. I mean, it's a fan. It's a DC motor moving possibly large amounts of air, it has to make some noise. But X1X remains really quiet while PS4's do tend to blow a lot of air. Just be glad you missed PS3 Phat. It had the world's tiniest exhaust vent and a leaf blower inside to try to brute force as much air through that vent as possible. The result was a free hand drier with every purchase!

Also, PS4s are inconsistent. 2 Pro's in the house now actually. They both seem to have different fan sounds. And the power button activates at a lower position and requires more force on one (it's kind of hard to hit.) There's a distressing amount of variance from unit to unit with PS.

NEStalgia

Zuljaras

@NEStalgia Actually I did not miss the PS3 Phat. I just got it later for collection purposes

I still play God of War 3 on it and it is loud. However my 360 E cant be heard like EVER. No matter what game I play I don't even know if it is on.

redd214

Spiderman sold 3.3 million copies in first 3 days! Astonishing numbers to put it mildly! Already got the platinum and can't wait for the dlc!

@redd214 Fastest selling Sony first party game of all time. I feel kinda sorry for God of War, that record didn't last long, at all.

I still need to make time for it, I can't bring myself to want to do another open world game quite yet, so I'm waiting until I'm not tried of them in general so that I can enjoy it the best I can
