@FragRed seriously... Both hori and razer are shut out of na entirely by Sony while the dubious scuf and nacon get a pass. So weird. Meanwhile razer sells just fine for xbox. While sony refuses to make their own premium controller.
@NEStalgia Yeah, you're right. This is the company that's "for the players" they would never do a thing like that.... it was likely some piece of overlooked paperwork that got accidentally shredded and all copies disappeared.
Maybe that's the real reason they won't allow cross play. It was nothing to do with whatever their PR team are coming out with this week, or next week, or the week after, it's because that sticky note to the one guy who can press a red button to allow it to happen on all games, was blown away when the office fan got switched on.

Oh, Sony.......just when Nintendo's making themselves look like they don't get this whole new fangled online thing, you prove that's just industry standard.....
@FragRed "For the players (except those dang Canadians and Americans what with their XBoxes and wrong thumbstick placements......they get no choice! (except Nacon because Sony reasons.)")
@Ralizah btw, that reminds me, do you hold your beloved prized most perfect horrid controller ever in that odd "DS claw grip" where your index and middle fingers are on R1/R2-L1/L2? Or do you hold it like a normal human being with pinky/ring/middle wrapping the hand grips and only the index fingers up on the triggers? Doing it the wrong way may be why you happen to like the worst controller I find the DS4 is only bearable if you happen to hold it in that awkward way, while other controllers aren't really holdable if you try to use it that way. I don't use the DS4 that way (and never will) but I suppose people that like that grip may like it better.
Meanwhile the proper controller for the system finally exists....and isn't available in NA because Sony has decided so So I'm down to paying scalper prices for it, loving the kind of iffy Hori, or buying a Brook and an XBox Elite and fudging with the trackpad simulation and firmware updates every time Sony tries to break it
Might be why some get on better with handheld Switch than others, too?
@NEStalgia I've never heard of anyone outside of small children holding a Dualshock 4 the wrong way. There's no reason to have claw grip.
On Xbox style controllers, though, the D-Pad isn't comfortably accessible. It makes no sense to place the analog stick, which protrudes further from the controller closer to the outside.
Also, DS4 triggers > Switch and Xbox triggers.
And there's no confusion about the face buttons with PS, as they're the only ones who use shapes. Xbox's mirrored layout of the buttons, on the other hand, makes it very confusing to locate face buttons quickly if you've ever gotten used to Nintendo's layout.
@NEStalgia What's the problem with that image? I thought it was the date; available from April 9, 2018 to February 10, 2018, but then I remembered you American people have it all backwards Why is GOW3 $100 though?
@Ralizah I do find it quite annoying that X (confirm) is in the bottom of a DS4, but A (confirm) is right on Ninty's systems. I know O used to be confirm on PlayStation, and they switched it at some point, possibly due to the A being in the bottom of the Xbox controller. All confusing stuff. I always keep pressing the wrong buttons when I switch controllers/console.
@Ralizah Ahh, glad you're not relying on the deformed grip, but then it still doesn't explain how you like the controller Lots of people use that grip, which I tend to forget. That's how Nier Automata ended up with that really screwed up default control scheme of R1 to fire (which you need to hold down near constantly.) But the problem is the 3 fingers really don't fit on the handgrips on the DS4. In fact that's most of it's problem beyond the parallel sticks (the Razer layouts with parallel sticks aren't near as awkward as DS4.) Well and the mushy buttons. And mushy d-pad. And stiff tiny sticks. And rubbery triggers.... But I could forgive it all if the fingers actually fit reasonably on the grips. I realized it's sized for Japanese children and Shigeru Miyamoto, but still....
XBox D-pad position. I don't know, for someone that loves the primary inputs being parallel, wouldn't that make XBox layout ideal for platformers though?
Triggers...gah....I mean PS triggers are possibly the worst part of the controller, and that's really saying something! It's kind of a draw between the Hori Onyx and DS4 which is worse. Razers are like XBox triggers. I mean it's a trigger. Look at an actual gun. Or electric drill. Or weedwacker. Or saw. Or electric hand mixer, or electric turkey carver. Or pretty much anything with a trigger other than a DS4. All of them look more or less the same. And feel more or less the same. (in tool enthusiast forums discussion of the triggers is even more common than video game forums! ) X1 triggers (and Razer) are just like power tools and gun triggers. DS4 triggers are like mushy pressure mats with foam stuffed inside. It's not even a trigger! DeWalt would be out of business if they made triggers like that on their tools! And people would get hurt! I mean, it's Japan, just find whatever part supplier Makita uses and run with it. I can forgive you for liking wrong stick layouts, wrong grips, and even incorrect stick tension. But those triggers are beyond redemption of "preference"...they're just bad. Repent and be saved!
I'll agree with you on the XBox mirrored layout....it matches Sony, but names like Nintendo. OTOH Sony is mirrored in Japan, so if you use a Japanese PS controller/system, it's all mirrored from the way you know it....with the same shapes in the same places, the functions are reversed (it matches Nintendo.) And you can just remap on XBox if you prefer. Something about "circle = yes, x means no" in Asian mindsets. Even though it's red....
@Tsurii yeah people use the claw grip with the DS's. Some eSports people swear by it and that's indeed why they like the layout. It doesn't really work with anything but DS. Still, the DS layout was designed to not interfere with the PS1 layout when they added a revised controller with sticks. I don't think it was ever intended to become a dominant scheme, it was merely the only way to add sticks without breaking the existing layout. And the original layout had the main controller parallel to the buttons: the d-pad, which was still the primary input back then. Japan seems to like the DS, supposedly, with smaller hands on average, but then Switch is crushing PS4 in Japan....and has the XBox layout Even Japan figured out the right way to play games. And of course the Razer Torunament and Hori Onys are available in Japan...but not here in XBox country...
@Octane Yeah it's showing GoW3 as $99.99 on the main splash. It's $19.99 on the actual page. Kind of a big screw up on the main splash, though not as bad as when the store totally falls apart
And yeah, in Japan O is still confirm, and X is still cancel. They switched it for Westerners because IDK. I I'm getting better at remembering what button is where but it catches me off guard all the time. No way to tame muscle memory like that. I end up confirming things or exiting things constantly unintentinoaly. Now FF is coming to Switch. Prepare for trying to erase 20 years of muscle memory!
Edit: @FragRedAnd before you start, yes there's over-abuse of smileys because I'm humorously prodding Ralizah about poor controller choice.
@NEStalgia As long as they aren't charging you $100 for the game
I don't recall if games like Nier had O as confirm and X as cancel. I think I would've noticed it if they switched it back once more, so I guess most games these days use X for confirm. I'm not sure though.
@Octane Sony Store charges me nothing for any game. No, seriously, they refuse to charge me, every time I try to check out I just get an error. It used to work intermittently 8 months ago, now it never works....
It's system wide that X is confirm and O is cancel....outside Japan. But Japanese units it's the other way around. Maybe Asia region in general, actually.
DualShock is my least favorite only because I used them in my life the least. I grew up playing with Nintendo controllers/handhelds of all shapes and sizes and an Xbox 360 controller for PC gaming (although that controller's D-Pad was garbage) so I didn't gravitate to one specific controller. I did own a PS2 though, and the controller was comfortable enough.
I do like how the DualShock has symmetrical sticks so the D-Pad isn't as awkward to use as the Switch, GameCube, and Xbox D-Pads though.
Metroid, Xenoblade, EarthBound shill
I run a YouTube/Twitch channel for fun. Check me out if you want to!
Please let me know before you send me a FC request, thanks.
@EvilLucario I personally gravely dislike symmetrical sticks, as the natural position for the hand and weight shifting is with the thumbs upright and not splayed sideways for the sticks. The camera stick isn't hit as often as the walking stick, so the thumb is naturally on the buttons often, where the left rarely gets a break from that splayed position always holding forward. The balance is easier with the upper position. The d-pad is in a worse position but that's used less than the stick outside fighting games an platformers. However, using the Razer controllers with parallel sticks showed me that the stick orientation isn't as important as the DS itself makes it seem. They work fairly naturally on there because of the tension, size, spacing, and most importantly larger grips mitigate the hand position issues. I have a strong preference for asymmetrical, but technically it's almost 50/50 and I can go back and forth between layouts if the ergonomics and feel of the rest of the controller aren't garbage like the DS. DS3 is really garbage though. DS4 is way better, I'll always give it that.
