@Octane Well if Days Gone had sold me from the start, I'd be more into it, you know?

Its a new IP, their first home game in years, hasn't really presented its unique identity that well, and outside of being a first party PS game....it's cemented itself in that weird "It could be good....buuuut...I have reasons to wait".

@Octane You can't convince me Pikmin 4 isn't finished yet. How long have they been teasing that game? I'm reasonably certain it'll be one of the January reveals.

RE: Kirby I... have a love and hate relationship with that series. So many of the games look generic and samey (including what I've seen of the one on the Switch), but once in a while, a Kirby game releases that feels like it tries to match some of the ambition of Nintendo's other big franchises. Planet Robobot was one of those games: a wildly creative and fun experience from start to finish.

I really enjoyed Wooly World. It felt like a return to form for the series: much of its level design reminded me favorably of the SNES original. Also, the aesthetic was consistent and gorgeous. The one on the Wii U looks all over the place, though. What's the catch: being able to throw eggs at items in the foreground? Moreover, the game doesn't seem to have a consistent aesthetic to it. It looks like wool Yoshi was tossed into some weird world made of cardboard.

I'm not saying I absolutely won't get either game, but Nintendo hasn't sold me on them yet.

In fairness, unless Capcom radically changed the series, I doubt Monster Hunter is now an open-world game. It sounds like they just turned the segmented maps into one big hunting ground.

@Ralizah I think Yoshi Switch looks odd because its UE4.

I think the new Yoshi game is supposed to be just general arts and crafts. I like the look.

I have never played a Yoshi game and the last Kirby game I played was an emulated Kirby Dream Land which I played several years ago.

@Ralizah Hopefully! I wonder why they didn't show it off during E3 if it's ready for launch. It's one of my favourite franchises, but the games take a long time to come out. Pikmin 3 was in development hell for ages too. It was worth the wait though.

Kirby is pretty good if it tries something different I think. Kirby 64 is one of the better N64 games I think, and I enjoyed Epic Yarn and clay Kirby on the Wii U. Woolly World was my first Yoshi game, and the new one looks like Woolly World 2, I think it's also developed by Good-Feel. Eh, we shall see. But flipping the levels to reveal the background was a mechanic in Woolly World as well, so I wonder what's new. And even WW felt a lot like a very traditional platformer to me. Good, but not outstanding, and it lacked a unique mechanic or two to separate it from the rest. Unraveled used a similar yarn aesthetic, but the yarn was big gameplay element too, that's something I missed in Woolly World. Although, to be fair, yarn was nothing but aesthetics in Epic Yarn too, but I ended up liking that game a little more.

Maybe not a true open world then for MHW, but definitely a game that lasts for a looong time.

@Octane My guess is that Nintendo wants to continue pacing its reveals and releases. Show off too much at E3 this year and suddenly everyone complains that you have nothing new to show the next year. E3 basically mixed gameplay of near-future games with some "far-off" announcements that got its base excited. As long as they keep this pattern going, they should be in a good spot.

Wasn't a fan of Kirby's Epic Yawn: the aesthetic was cute, but there was no sense of thrill or urgency to it. No challenging level design. Wooly World managed to combine the chill arts and crafts aesthetic with some pretty great level design and fun bosses.

Never tried the clay one on Wii U, as I absolutely detested Canvas Curse, and this was more of the same.

Yoshi Switch feels like a weird mix of Wooly World and Media Molecule's lovely Tearaway. Except Tearaway actually felt aesthetically consistent and creative.

Oh yeah, Monster Hunter games are massive. You can play them basically forever, as they basically consistent of grinding the same monsters over and over again for better loot, although it looks like World will adopt even more of a narrative approach than MH4U did.

Again, I think Yoshi being made in Unreal Engine contributes to the slightly off look. How many Nintendo games are made in middleware like that? It looks different because its the first to use UE4.

The aesthetic though is strange I admit.

And the jank physics as things fly off when hit.

How is the new Yoshi game not aesthetically consistent? Looks basically all like arts and crafts. Cotton balls, paper clips, string, paper, etc. The characters are basically the only thing that look strange.

I just noticed how badly the background in that game is blurred out. The blur looks awful.

@Ralizah Epic Yarn had good music. I dunno, it was a jolly game. Easy as heck, but it's Kirby. Clay Kirby had some neat mechanics. The only issue was that you could look at the TV, and the game looked a lot better on the TV than on your GamePad.

Good, I don't like grinding. Maybe that's why I never got far into Tri. I'll just finish the story and defeat every Monster (do those games have a list to keep track of them, like a Pokedex?) and call it a day. At least, depending on how long all of that takes, but I suppose that story and side quests will last me a good while.

@YummyHappyPills How can you even tell something is made in UE4? I don't think it looks off to be honest, and if I Nintendo hadn't told me, I wouldn't know it was UE4.

Octane

Haruki_NLI

@Octane So, the way the cardboard bushes spin and fly away, is actually the default UE4 physics for that.

Secondly, lighting. Every engine has telltale signs. For most, it's actually lighting.

@Octane I mean, you're not going to be fighting hundreds of unique monsters in the same game, and you'll generally remember which ones you've faced because their fighting patterns are incredibly individual. And some level of grinding is unavoidable because you need specific monster parts to make better armor and weapons to hold your own against more powerful monsters.

I generally hate most grinding in games as well, but the reason it works so well in MH is because it's always a learning experience. Even if you manage to defeat a monster dozens of times, you're still going to find room to improve your technique against them. Moreover, unless this game tones down the difficulty, encounters can get pretty darn hard later in the game. Not overwhelmingly so, but strategies and equipment you've successfully employed against weaker monsters will end up getting you killed, and it's back to the drawing board.

I'm not a hardcore MH fan by any means, but they're deep games, and I could see how a person could lose themselves in them.

^I've certainly done so in the past, and the time demand has kept me from going back to Monster Hunter for quite a while now, though I may reconsider that soon enough....

Also, sad that Ni no Kuni 2 may have to share the same release week at Digimon Story: Cyberslueths - Hacker's Memory, since the priority will likely go to Digimon. Because Digimon. They're both sequels to games I haven't finished, though...

As for Paragon:

New character has been a blast so far, either to play as, or have on your team. She's a great dedicated tank character with abilities that I found easy to grasp. The basic Tank deck works so well with her so far that I don't think I need to make a custom deck for her. Would be nice...after I hit 20, I'll be out of available deck slots for the foreseeable future...unless I pony up cash, of course...F2P, man...

@NEStalgia I believe The Last Guardian is getting a free VR 'demo' this week. It's a short 45-60 minute game, but it's free, and you don't have to own The Last Guardian (even though you should!).

You didn't do horror, right? RE7 is good in VR, or so I've heard. And the Wipeout Collection is getting a VR update early next year.

Ooohh, that's pretty cool! Last Guardian in VR? Do you know if the whole game will be available in FR at some point or is it just a one and done demo for tech demo's sake? I had sworn off Last Guardian, cool as it looked, because even though I don't no the ending (so it's not a spoiler just a guess) I mean, lets face it, we all know the kid or the giraferisaurusthingy gets killed in the end and I was not going to subject myself to that torment. But for VR that would be an awesome game I'd buy.

Yeah, I definitely DEFINITELY don't do horror even on 2D. Even on 6.3" screens let alone VR. So RE7, Arizona Sunshine, Inpatient, and that Until Dawn expansion etc. are all out of the running. (what IS it with VR and horror?!) I did buy Doom VFR because....Doom...and it's not horror, just gory, but you feel in control the whole time.

Edit: Plus Doom VFR is more or less a Doom expansion pack with a different story and different missions, so even without the VR, it's just plain more Doom.

@YummyHappyPills What did you mean about Detroit having things that are "a bit much for some?" That's probably the single most exciting game I've seen from Sony for the past 2 E3s (not that Horizon (still in my backlog) doesn't look awesome, but Detroit just really piques my interest....it's a very Philip K. Dick vibe which I completely get sucked into.

@NEStalgia Domestic violence is going to be a little real for some people. I know some who have experienced it are still hype for the game and don't care but others like myself arent, because everyone is different and will handle these things differently

@NEStalgia Horror and VR go well together I think. If the main draw of the game is to be scary, immersion is important, and actually being there, in the game, adds to the immersion. But yeah, even though I haven't played RE7, I do believe it's still one of the best games for PSVR at the moment, simply because the entire game is playable in VR. Which is pretty neat.

No, it's just a small tech demo. I'm not sure how TLG would work in VR. It's not the best optimised game either, so it would take a big hit in VR I think. And trust me, the ending isn't that predictable.

I'm pretty sure that's an insignificantly tiny part of the game that the dumb outrage media have just sensationalised.

It's dangerous to go alone! Stay at home.

Haruki_NLI

@Dezzy Sure, its entirely possible it is. 2000 pages of script afterall.

Its also David Cage. Subtlety of a sledgehammer and all that.

As I said though, he tackles some subjects that regardless of which game it is, could be a little on the nose for some. That's part of the charm I suppose
As I said, some people wont care and thats great. But you also need to consider not everyone is the same so there will be people turned off by the game due to its thematics.

And again, thats fine if you arent. Im not saying its wrong. Im saying you should expect with difficult themes in anything that people can be turned away either due to personal experiences, being wimps, or its just not their cup of tea as a game.

Like for me, victim of domestic abuse. Still got the PTSD. Upon knowing this is in the game Im not too keen on getting it, and you can say "oh get over it" but its not so simple. I handle things differently to you. For a personal reason and the multitude of difficult themes in the games David Cage makes, I simply choose to stay away, because for me and others, we arent comfortable with that.

For others it could be a simple aversion to adult games. There are people like that too.

For others it could be because they simply arent a fan of this kind of interactive experience.

I mean sure, you can sit there and say "Oh, its just outrage media itll be fine" but thats being disingenuous to the people who will, for legitimate reasons look at the game and say, for me, as an individual, at this time in my life or based on my experiences, is a bit much at this current time.

And there will be others in the exact same position who will say, for me, as an individual, at this point in my life or based on my experiences, this game is right up my street and Im getting it day one.

The game has every right to do what it wants, and I won't take that away from anyome.

But when a game presents tough themes, you need to respect that it wont be for everyone. Sure the outrage media is stupid, but that isnt the be all end all.

Remember on PS I posted about this same thing and got s*** for it. Told to man up. "Oh Ive been through domestic violence and Im picking it up". Great for you! You moved on in a way that benefits you. That doesnt work for everyone though. Im not taking it away from you.

But again, please consider that there will be people who for completely legitimate reasons will skip this game, because everyone is different, and its not a good idea nor helpful to disrespect them, because for someone like me, its based entirely on how I feel at the time, and Im not yet ready.

Again, its going to be a few people of millions yes, and the outrage media will likely be bigger, but I was simply giving reasons as to why someone would skip the game. They didnt say it had to be likely, but it is a genuine reason to.

The more likely reason someone would skip the game is probably because David Cage experiences arent their cup of tea.
