@NEStalgia In all honesty it's most likely a case of me not properly maintaining the console as it should be, but it is interesting to see which games activate it. RE7 in particular seemed tough for extended play on the OG PS4

Also, unrelated, but I started Nier Automata. I haven't played much but the presentation and scale of it is absolutely stunning. The gameplay is smooth as water and 60fps just makes it all the better.

I especially loved the first boss. And the seamless transitions into 2d sections are oddly satisfying to encounter.

Put simply, I'm already more impressed with this game than BOTW, which makes me hopeful that it's not open worlds I'm burned out on, just the more boring ones.

@Operative2-0 Not sure that special maintenance is required on a PS4. I had mine stuffed in an AV rack and never moved it since launch....not the most airflow in the world for cooling (though the blower blew out the back of the rack.) I'm kind of surprised it lived after it somehow was on and trying/failing to eject a disc for several days non stop once (something hit those ridiculous capacitive buttons when placed in front of it, and I kept hearing a noise, wondering what it was.) Though my PS4 has had little use at all compared to my 3DS and to a lesser degree WiiU. PSVR deal dragged me back into PS regular use.

Nier is one of those games I ignored when it was announced, I just didn't "get" it, but I've heard nothing but good things about it....

@Ralizah Never played Okami I assume? I thought you were joking, because the first 'dungeon' has three monkeys you need to find. Certainly a weird coincidence!

I'm sure there's a way to invert the controls, it was possible on the PS2. I just can't find the options menu lol. Options and the touch pad open the same menu, and it isn't there.

@YummyHappyPills Try cleaning the fans. If they're dusty (especially if they're dusty on one side from not using it in a good while), the fans can get out ot balance and sound louder than normal. And yeah, dust within the system also causes it to heat up faster. I clean my consoles once in a while. The PS4 is loud sometimes, but so was the Wii U. The GameCube is still as silent as ever.

@Operative2-0 Let me know what you think of NieR if you've played a bit more of it. I didn't like it as much as I thought I would, so I never finished it.

@Ralizah At least the goat minigame wasn't as bad as some of Mario Odyssey's minigames (jump rope especially comes to mind).

The goat mini-game was stupid, but it only lasted a minute at most. I never had an issue with it.

Octane

NEStalgia

The goat minigame was a tutorial for horse riding concealed as a minigame, plus a bit of character building to drive home Link's simple old life of frivolity. It wasn't hard to do and didn't take long. Of the flaws in the game, the goat game is not something I ever thought poorly on.

Still looking for PSVR awesomeness. Played the 2 demo discs, I love the Eagle Flight game from Ubi....simple, but it works. Batman is amazing in terms of living "in the world"....too bad it's like a 45 minute interactive sequence and then you're done with no real game involved but it's really cool to dive into that world....the city feels so real. Skyrim will be my meat and potatoes on there.

@NEStalgia I believe The Last Guardian is getting a free VR 'demo' this week. It's a short 45-60 minute game, but it's free, and you don't have to own The Last Guardian (even though you should!).

You didn't do horror, right? RE7 is good in VR, or so I've heard. And the Wipeout Collection is getting a VR update early next year.

Octane

TuVictus

Re7 is good in vr, I'd just recommend playing on normal or easy cuz playing in VR is like hard mode by itself.

Ni No Kuni? More like No No Kuni For You!

The game is delayed to March 23. Meaning it'll be either GOW or Ni No Kuni for me, and I'm going with the former.

@Octane Oh, good, I'll probably actually be able to nab it at launch, then! I'm not allowing myself to buy new games for any system until I've fully played whatever I've most recently bought, and, considering Shadow of the Colossus releases in early February, that would have meant choosing between the two (there was no way I was going to complete some big JRPG between January 19th and February 6th!)

I just pray to god that Nintendo gives me a break on the big releases in early 2018, considering Sony's new strategy every year seems to be front-loading its best games in Q1 (leaving the rest of the year to stuff that I can happily ignore, like Days Gone, God of War, Dreams, Spider-Man, Detroit: Become Human, etc.)

@Ralizah I don't believe there's anything from Nintendo in the first two months. Maybe that Kirby game, but that looks too similar to the one I played on the Wii. For me it's Shadow of the Colossus, Monster Hunter World and God of War for Q1. Even without Ni No Kuni, 2018 is going to be packed with games, I made a list, but I don't think I can finish everything next year.

How can you ignore all of those games by the way!?

Days Gone, we discussed this actually, you could mistake for TLOU, and sure its a nice idea but lacks identity. Probably a mistake to market that game now alongside TLOU. Plus, if you guys know the history of what the first game Sony Bend made, before they were acquired, it's a good reason to skip anything they make.

Hint: Bubsy 3D

God of War, I mean Naughty Dog of War, is easily skippable because we don't know if that 30 hours is fun or not yet, nor do we know if the complete overhaul is going to be a good thing or not, it's a wait and see thing, because we simply don't know if its a good change.

Dreams. Yep. Not for those of us with less imagination. Good for kids though.

Spider-Man, I mean looks nice. But if you don't care about Spider-Man?

Detroit, I know, including myself, some people who will have objections to a few things in the game, not saying they shouldn't be there, but that its a bit much for some. On the other hand, its David Cage. I'd have to struggle to enjoy that anyway.

Early 2018 for Sony is very much a "Wait and see" or "Wow, this doesn't do it for me at all because I don't care about X".

@Octane I'm sure they'll release something in the first two months. I'm expecting a bunch of 2018 reveals in January. Those boring looking Kirby and Yoshi games would be perfect for Q1! There's also the Bayonetta collection, which I can safely ignore.

Oh, and regarding the games I mentioned:

Days Gone: Bland-looking open world zombie game that still doesn't feel like it has its own identity.

God of War: Narrative-driven, Naughty Dog-inspired soft reboot where you drag a kid around. Looks awful.

Dreams: A decent 3D level editor (which involves digging around in unintuitively designed menus and dragging placement markers around a screen) combined with the sort of uninspired platforming mechanics found in LittleBigPlanet. Also, even if the menus and platforming didn't turn me off, I've learned from my experience with Super Mario Maker that I'm not really into "creative" games. I buy games to have fun and play someone else's vision, not make my own.

Spider-Man: I'm not convinced by what I've seen of the gameplay. Too much of an emphasis placed on setpieces, quick-time events, cutscenes, etc. If the game turns out to be a fun, exploratory open-world experience on the same level as the Arkham games, I'll reconsider buying it when it goes on sale for a decent price, but I don't have my hopes up.

Detroit: Become Human: It actually looks interesting, but I'm not going to pay top dollar to watch cutscenes play out and make occasional moral choices for 8 - 10 hours. I'll pay $20 or less for it, like I would with any other movie.

MH World, Shadow of the Colossus, and Ni no Kuni 2 all look superb, although I'll be skipping the first one until later in the year, since it releases soon and I already have enough on my plate at the moment.

You may as well skip any game because you don't know if it's going to be fun or not. And most studios have made bad game or two in the past, I may as well quit gaming altogether going by that logic.

@Octane This is their first console game since Bubsy 3D. And their first own IP. I have every right to be a little pensive about a zombie game that looks like a weird mix of Ride to Hell and TLOU with their initial selling point upon reveal being "Look how many zombies we have on screen".

Which I might add, is how they sold the Gamecube pre-release, "Look how many Pikmin/Marios are on screen right now".

That's not something you shout about 4 years in, makes me wonder what else the game has.

That's actually a really perfect description of Days Gone, based on what I've seen!

I'll be glad when it releases so Sony doesn't waste time with extensive gameplay footage of it at their E3 conferences. I'd rather see anything else. Even God of War, and it's hard to imagine my level of interest in that being any lower than it already is.

@Ralizah That's fine! To each their own! I prefer the more unique Kirby games, I actually really liked the one on the Wii U. Woolly World as alright, the yarn didn't really affect the gameplay, so it was just another platformer, but with Tropical Freeze being a thing, it had quite a bit to live up to. The new one looks like more of Woolly World, so I'm not sold yet. And I wish Metroid Prime was a 2018 title. Oh well, here's hoping that they finished Pikmin 4 in the meantime. Cause that's the number one game on my Switch wishlist right now.

As for the PS4, I'm probably getting all of the games you just mentioned, including Shadow of the Colossus, Monster Hunter World, Ni No Kuni (at some point) and Dragon Quest XI. Not sure about Red Dead, it depends on how they handle the micro-transactions. Concrete Genie and Biomutant look interesting too, but I believe we have only seen a short trailer for both of those games. They're definitely on my radar. I'm just afraid that Days Gone, DQXI, MHW and Ni No Kuni are too many open-world games for me to handle in a single year...

@YummyHappyPills Because the Siphon Filter franchise aren't games, and portable games don't count, right? Sometimes it feels you're just trying to be negative for the sake of being negative.

Having hundreds of AI on screen at the same time isn't something you see every day (definitely not in the scope we see in Days Gone), and it makes for a tense trailer. So yeah, I understand why they revealed the game the way they did.

Octane

Haruki_NLI

@Octane Portable games do count, and I have no idea what Syphon Filter is but fair play.

My issue is the same issue some have with GameFreak moving Pokemon to Switch, the uncertainty because its a huge workload jump.

@YummyHappyPills I think that's only an issue when strict deadlines are involved. Given enough time and resources, I don't think the move from handheld to home console should be a big issue. Bend Studio also doubled in size in the recent years, and they've been working on it for quite some time. As for Pokemon, as long as they don't rush the game out next year, I think they will be fine too. That being said, I don't expect the next entry to be a huge departure from the franchise as was rumoured before. They've got something that works for a lot of people, so there's no reason to change that yet.
