Peek-a-boo

@Octane Finished!

Was going to go to a Christmas lights turning on event in our small town however, it was raining and my partner chose to sit in front of our wood burner for the evening, whilst I (thankfully) played The Frozen Wilds.

Yeah, that was a pretty satisfying expansion, and while we didn’t get to hear quite as much about Sylens’ past as I would have liked, it was nice to hear a little bit about his backstory through Ourea and CYAN.

And yes, Gildun (not Gilden) was indeed the eccentric chap who roamed with you in the area below the dam. The quest itself was fairly straightforward, but it shows that if you put the effort into creating a strong and well written character, then that quest becomes more remarkable and memorable!

The Fireclaw was just so blooming hard.

I don’t even think that there’s a pattern or a way to knock it down easier/quicker. I had one small health potion and a sliver of herbal medication left by the time the machine was downed. It certainly doesn’t help when the battle is set in an underground cave of sorts, as it gives you a lot less breathing room.

The conversation with CYAN lasted nearly twenty minutes!

The Frozen Wilds definitely helps tie up a few loose ends in the main game, and is nice to see the world from a Banuk perspective, given that their culture and ideologies are wildly different from any other tribe. All in all, I spent 17 hours in the new area, and I still have a couple of hunting missions as well as finding FIVE Fireclaws around The Cut.

This is the best story expansion I have played since The Old Hunters two years ago. I highly recommend it!

@Peek-a-boo Yeah, the Fireclaw is a Frostclaw on steroids. Ice arrows don't seem to work, and exposing its shoulders and destroying its cargo sacs takes just as long as bombarding it with bombs and hoping for the best. At least the fights are long and they keep you on your toes.

The hunting challenges are even better than those in the main game IMO, and Ikrie's challenge has to be the most challenging one in the game. Not because the enemies are difficult, but the entire fight itself plays like a puzzle, and you really need to plan everything ahead. I don't think anyone got a gold on his/her first try.

Anyway, I think it was an improvement over the main game, which bodes well for the inevitable sequel. I liked how they played around with familiar objectives, like activating the Tallneck, which wasn't as straight-forward as the previous Tallnecks. I hope that the variety they introduced in this expansion carries over to the next game as well.

I still wish there was a little bit more interactivity with the environment. It always feels good to destroy a bunch of pots and crates, and I don't think any of that was in Horizon. Climbing is another area that could use some improvement, even Uncharted 4 had more variety with the climbing pick, and games like Assassin's Creed always offered a bit more freedom when scaling buildings and other structures. It just feels a bit dated coming across a watchtower and learning you can only climb it by using the ladder, even though Aloy should be perfectly capable of scaling it from any other direction.

@JaxonH btw when using dual shock in Skyrim vr, does head tracking still work, or is head tracking only for using Move?

Also, Doom and Skyrim bundles now include new psvr hardware, apparently, that passes hdr through, simplifies to one cable from the helmet, and ditches the inline remote for on helmet controls. Most other kits include the old one though.

@ralizah all this time you've been going on about how great ds triggers are. .. Did you mean launch model pos ds or the newer model? Got my pro. New ds is night and day. My launch day ones are pure garbage and the triggers are mush... New ones are smooth. The rubbers falling of the stick and i hardly even played the thing. Sticks are rough. The newer one send a lot better.

Ralizah

@NEStalgia Original model, but they were never "mush." Maybe you just had a defective controller? I've had mine for years and it's still in perfect condition.

@Ralizah i have 3 launch controllers... Triggers are all are the same spongey mush (and the one is still pretty much new, do it's not a wear issue), but the new ones are pretty decent.

@NEStalgia Like I said, mine works perfectly, and has worked perfectly since I picked it up in late 2014. Not launch, but also well before the remodeled DS4.

Doing a second of research, I noticed that they actually have improved the build quality of the DS4.

Maybe I just got lucky with mine. I tend to be lucky with new-ish consoles. I bought an Xbox 360 right in the middle of the RROD fiasco and never had a single issue with it. My right joycon on the Switch also had no issues!

@Ralizah interesting. Not sure if that's the latest one or an in between one. But yeah my 3 were launch. The tigers squeak, are mushy, the sticks are rough if you rotate them at full tilt, and the rubber is falling off with minimal hours of use. One was from the console, the other two bought with the console separately. All on launch day.

I admit the new ones feel a lot better. I still hate the layout, but at least it all feels solid now.

So has anyone played Ys 8?
I know they said they were redoing the translation. How bad actually was it? Cos I noticed the game was at 85% on metacritic. So couldn't be that bad?

It's bad, from what I've heard. The examples I've seen make it clear that it was sloppy. Not enough that it's unplayable, but a major system had a lot of details associated with the wrong items (recipes described a certain effect, only for the end result to have a completely different effect) and a lot of names, flavor text, and dialogue clearly reek of amateur work - like they knew enough to get the point across, but could care less about how it was presented. IMO, that really hurts Ys' appeal, since Falcom does put a lot of detail and naunce into its worlds and characters. It's not exactly "Hamlet as told by a 15-year-old high school student," but it's close enough that I decided to wait until the patch is out before I dive into it. I'll play Ys Origins while I wait...

@CanisWolfred Personally, the translation is nowhere near bad enough to hurt my enjoyment of the game. There were a lot of awkward lines, but the voice acting is pretty good and I still liked a lot of the characters and the story. The action is what you're really here for and it's fantastic. It's in my opinion, the best action combat in a JRPG ever and yes that includes Nier Automata. The game is also chuck full of content and it's one of the few JRPGs where I want to do absolutely everything. It's certaintly more then what I can say for XC 1 where exploration and sidequests were a complete waste of time and the characters and story were boring. VERY highly recommended, better then Nier Automata (imo).

Have you played any other Ys games? I mean, I'm not saying its a bad game. I haven't played it, after all. It's just that, well...the series has always had those elements. But NIS America has had a history of sloppy translations (Disgaea excluded), and this was the first Ys game they've translated. The previous games were all worked on by XSEED, who actually put a lot of effort into their translations, and as a fan of the Ys series, I can only be disappointed that the translation is sloppier in comparison. I look at those examples and read those awkward lines and say "this isn't the Ys I've come to know and love."

If you enjoyed it fine enough, and are a fan of the series already, then I'll leave it at that. But if you're new to the series, then I can highly recommend the earlier games in the series, even if they may not be exactly the same mechanically. You may find yourself impressed with more than just the fast-paced gameplay.

@CanisWolfred Gerudo Big Hole has a catchy tune mapped to it.

Don't hate me because I'm bnahabulous.

Hmmm well are those examples the worst examples or are those just a few of many more that are equally bad.
Cos half of that I'd call nitpicking. Half is a reasonable complaint.
And quite a few of those you wouldn't necessarily know were bad translation unless someone told you. I think I'd just assume a few of those were deliberately awkward jokes or deliberately weird phrasings (to show that it's a very foreign culture or something)

FFXV thingy today at 8am EST for anyone who's still following it.

Very likely they'll announce the DLC for 2018.

If they do Ardyn and Luna chapters I'll be pretty damn pleased. If they make the second continent open-world I'll be overjoyed.

@Snaplocket I'll agree that the plots are basic in other Ys games. I think that's why the other elements I talked about stood out to me more. I tend to expect basic everything when it looks like the story is simple, but that rarely was the case beyond the original entry.

PQube is localizing Omega Labyrinth Z for PS4 and Vita.

PQube's description of it:

Omega Labyrinth Z is the most tantalizing rogue-like RPG of 2018. Battle through challenging dungeons that feature ever-changing maps, monsters and loot, as you pursue your quest for the Holy Grail, a magical object that will let the girls one true desire come to fruition.

Rumours of an item referred to as the ‘Grail of Beauty’ are whispered through the hallowed halls of the storied educational institution of Embellir Girls Academy. The Grail can grant any wish, large or small, and as the tale goes, it is hidden in a secret cave that only reveals itself on opening day of the Academy each year. Aina Akemiya, a popular young student at the academy, is fed up with feeling self-conscious about her body, and so she sets out on a grand quest to obtain the Grail of Beauty!

Key Features

  • Tactical turn-based combat – Control the battlefield with expert positioning and use of skills!
  • Explore lengthy dungeons – Randomly generated dungeons brimming with loot is yours for the taking!
Item management made easy – The ‘Purse’ system allows you to send items back to town if your inventory fills up in a dungeon.
  • A shopaholics dream – Purchase items with Omega Power, even the dungeons have shops!
Breasts bursting with power – Collect Omega power to grow your breasts! As your breasts grow, so does your characters power!
  • Reach maximum boobage – Grow to a Z-Cup in order to unleash the ultimate attack: Hyper Omega Slash! You deflate again after using it, so time it carefully!
  • Level up your characters stats and skills – Utilize the ‘Faint☆Awakening’ system to improve characters by touching them until they scream with excitement!
  • Transform crystals into items with the power of breasts – The ‘Oppai Appraisal’ system lets you reveal the true nature of loot!
  • Recover in the hot springs – Get your power back in the dungeon hot springs and get to know the ladies of Omega Labyrinth Z better!
  • Touch anywhere, anytime – No matter where you are, in dungeons, dialogue screens or menu screens, touch the characters for unique reactions!

...so, yes, apparently anything can potentially be localized.

Bloody hell Japan, you're just getting silly now.

Do the respectable thing and try and blend your pervy stuff into something less weird.
