I'm not sure how to react to this one. On the one hand, recognition for keyboards is nice, and I suppose it's a bit closer to playing a real instrument... but it still somehow feels so wrong. If you're going to make a game for keyboards, I'd like to see a radically different approach from the usual falling-notes thing. How about show the chord charts (ie. EbMaj7) over the lyrics, and let you play each chord with whatever inversion or style you'd like, or -- I don't know, something more musical. If you're bringing that many instruments into someone's living room, I'd like to see more being taught than rhythm and obeying the prompts.
I think that's a good idea, but I think that's a totally different game, more of a music-learning game than a rhythm game. Rock Band is for people who don't necessarily know anything about music. I don't think the average frat party wants to be learning inversions. The vocals of course aren't falling notes, but that's easier to intuitively match since you don't have to learn chords or anything.
Pretty neat that they got an actual guitar (if a Squier can be called an actual guitar) to work with the game. I'm sure people who don't play guitar will love that, and who knows, maybe they'll mess around with it when the game's not on and learn a bit of the real thing. The midi controller could have the same effect as long as it's USB.
Maybe now that they're moving closer to actual instruments (real guitar, Midi controller, microphone) they might someday do a Rock Band Advanced that teaches a bit of musical knowledge. That would be neat. But it would be weird to have a game that is falling notes for most instruments but actual music for keys.
I don't know. I don't play Rock Band. More of a SingStar guy myself, so feel free to ignore my half-ignorant babbling!

I'm more of a karaoke guy myself, with a laptop loaded with karaoke tracks + videos and a little mixing board, ha. I also run a bizarre kind of variation on it that I believe is exclusive to me: quiet karaoke parties for 2. Well, not that quiet, but the problem is that karaoke gets so damn loud, you can't usually do it without annoying neighbors. With the patented quiet-karaoke-party-for-2, I have each of us wearing headphones and holding our mics; the music and image is through the TV / speakers, but our own amplified (and reverbed, slightly compressed, etc) voices only come through the headphones. So, from the outside, no one hears your signing, just the music playing, ha.

Wow, that seems pretty good, IMO. But... I don't know if I want to buy all new instruments. Maybe I would buy the keyboard, but the new guitars seem like a bit much. But at the same time, they seem like they're kind of important, especially with this new Pro mode. Not to mention, I'm still using the instruments from Guitar Hero World Tour... so maybe I should upgrade (who knows... those may not even work with this one...). But, uhh, I guess I'll wait for the price (or get it for Christmas.....).

This looks dang sweet. I actually play the drums and can play guitar a little. I love Rock Band 2 and have around $300 USD is DLC for Rock Band and this is really awesome to see they are taking the game to new heights instead of just putting more music tracks, that I could give a crap about half of them, and call it Guitar Hero 4 and 5 and the now coming 6!
.... Oh and as for the Drums, both Rock Band and Guitar Hero will actually teach you how to play somewhat. I knew how to play prior to the games of course but putting all the time I have in the game and Im now on my 3rd Drumset and 5th Pedal, Id say it could teach somebody how to play somewhat, especially if you add the 3 symbol attacments to the kits.
Yea, Slapshot, considering drums basically involves hitting things with sticks in rhythm, there could certainly be worse ways to get started. A drummer who plays music with me actually practices on his Rock Band set because he doesn't have room to set up a full set at home and can't make that much noise anyway. Of course, this doesn't stop me from calling him a total nerd.

Whether these will be actual chords on guitar or just random buttons pressed together, I don't know, but it looks like they are moving toward teaching actual music, somewhat. I'm still not sure exactly how all this works. Should be interesting. I thought the keyboards were just going to be another set of button prompts.
