Roblox is interesting because it feels very different from traditional games.
Most games are created by a studio, released, and players experience the content that developers made. Roblox works differently because the players themselves are also creators.
The platform has grown into something much bigger than just playing individual experiences. People create games, build communities, learn development, experiment with ideas, and even create businesses around their projects.
What makes Roblox unique is the variety. One person might play a simple mini-game, another might join a roleplay experience, while someone else might spend hours building their own worlds using Roblox Studio.
In some ways, Roblox reminds me of Minecraft, Garry's Mod, and LittleBigPlanet because the community is a huge part of the platform's identity. The content keeps changing because millions of users are constantly creating new things.
I also think Roblox is interesting from a game development perspective. It introduced many younger players to concepts like building, scripting, design, and online communities at an early age.
Do you think Roblox should be considered a "game" anymore, or has it become more of a gaming platform like YouTube is for videos?
What do you think is the biggest reason Roblox has stayed popular for so long?
It's become popular because of ease of access. I myself have an account there however when I heard the Platform failed to adequately protect children I stopped using it. I think anyone who cares about minors being safe online should stop using it too but that's a debate for another day, I'm not here to rain on anyone's parade. I'm just speaking my mind as a parent.
@LightSpirit Yeah, I think that is probably the biggest downside of platforms like Roblox. The reason they are so interesting is because anyone can create things and there is always new content, but that also makes moderation way harder compared to a normal game.
I can understand why some parents are cautious about it. When you have millions of players, especially younger ones, keeping the community safe becomes a huge challenge.
At the same time, I think the idea behind Roblox is pretty interesting because it gets people interested in creating things, not just consuming them. The hard part is finding the right balance between giving people creative freedom and making sure the platform stays safe.
@reginaldbelvarion I just want to let you know that making multiple different threads all at once, especially if they're about the same game, makes you seem like a bot and could get you in trouble.
I'm not accusing you of anything because your other interactions in the forums really do seem genuine, I'm just warning you.

@kkslider5552000 I can understand why some people feel that way, especially with younger players spending so much time on it. I think the platform has a responsibility to keep improving moderation and safety. At the same time, I also find it interesting because there are a lot of people who use Roblox to learn game development and create their own experiences. It feels like there are two very different sides to the platform.
@Matt_Barber True. I think Roblox is designed to keep people inside its own ecosystem rather than hopping between different games. Between the social side, the constant updates, and the huge variety of experiences, it's easy for someone to spend all of their gaming time there. That's probably one of the biggest reasons people call it a platform instead of just a single game.
Both my kids have their own Switch, and while the older one played lots of Animal Crossing and plenty of Zelda (BOTW) on it and the younger one played lots of FIFA and Fortnite using Switch, Roblox is the one they gravitated towards for online play with cousins, so it's had a lot of their shared downtime over the past year or two.
I've not really looked at it very much at all, so don't have any solid thoughts on it, but it is interesting how much the platform succeeds at navigating the cost of entry for kids compared to other platforms. The games look like trivial ***** to me, but they've managed to have endless fun with it for ages, and the safety concerns seem a little overblown to me. What do you think is gonna happen - a stranger climb out of the phone?
You guys had me at blood and semen.
What better way to celebrate than firing something out of the pipe?
@gcunit I actually think that's a big part of why Roblox has lasted so long. Most games eventually run out of things to do, but Roblox keeps replacing old trends with new ones. One month everyone is playing Grow a Garden, then it's 99 Nights in the Forest, then RIVALS, Steal a Brainrot, Fisch, or something completely different. It almost feels like dozens of different games living inside one platform.
I also agree that for a lot of families it's become more of a social platform than just a game. If your kids have cousins or friends already on Roblox, that's where they'll naturally spend time together because it's free and everyone can jump into the same experience in a few seconds.
As for the safety side, I think there are two separate conversations. The games themselves aren't automatically a problem, but because anyone can create experiences and the audience is so young, Roblox has to work a lot harder on moderation than a normal game does. That's probably why people have such different opinions on it.
For me, Roblox isn't really competing with one game anymore. It's competing with entire gaming libraries because there's always another experience to try without ever leaving the platform. I think that's what makes it so different from something like Fortnite or Minecraft.

Online Predators groom children, build up trust over time and that's where the danger lies. No a stranger isn't going to climb out of the phone, but over time the child could trust that stranger and horrible things could happen like if they arranged to meet in real life which happens quite often. This is why Platforms like Roblox must be held accountable for failing to ensure the safety of minors.
@reginaldbelvarion Yes, and Activision Blizzard employs a lot of talented people. The people in charge of it are still evil and I hope they die as painfully as possible. Edit: There's a tiny non-zero chance all the worst people have left Activision Blizzard since the merger but I think my point otherwise still stands.

Uh, I've seen enough to say that the company is negligent to the point of should be criminal (if not just factually is) and at one point heavily implied that predators still give them money and thus are worth keeping around their platform.
