Topic: As a woman, I do not think there is anything wrong by default with sexy women in games

First of all let me tell you I love Nintendo and I love this site. I have been a lurker for a long time and I have been playing Nintendo since I was a little girl. Back then, in the 80s, other girls often made fun of me because videogames back then were seen as anti-social.

I have seen the whole industry evolve, sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse. In the 90s, videogames were full of sexy women, and I never had a problem with that. Videogame magazines freely wrote how sexy and attractive they were, and no one blinked an eye. But as a woman, you were SUPPOSED to have a problem with it. When I told other women I had no problem with Mai Shiranui and her bouncing boobs (what is wrong with giving guys some eye candy?) or Chun Li and her thong, they socially isolated me. This happened A LOT in school. But I kept playing.

And today, it is crazy. When Zelda cried in Breath of the Wild, some people said it was sexist because she relied on Link and showed weakness. WHAT?! Are you not allowed to show emotions in games now?

Today there are tons of female heroes. It is never a problem finding a character you like. But there is another thing: outfits.

Yes, it is a bare butt. Is there a problem with that? Do you know the REAL reason why women wear thongs? No, it is not because of panty lines (that has to do with seamless underwear, not thongs) it is because we want to feel confident!

And this is exactly what I see in this woman. She is incredibly confident. I will tell you why I started to like her so much.

When I first saw her, I was surprised. She did not have a Barbie butt! She did not look like an unhealthy model! She did not look like a teenage boy! She actually looked like a woman! She had a big butt!

And not only that, you can easily tell she has some proper junk in her trunk - that is not a firm butt by any stretch of the definition. So here was this woman with a big, unfit bum, who showed it off completely shamelesly and did not give a dang about what anyone thought of it. THAT is confidence and that is what I want to feel to!

You see, despite her outfit, her butt size and the appearent lack of firmness, she is not just eye candy for men. She is brimming with self confidence and she struts her stuff with no shame. I think that is a GREAT thing!

This is my view. How do you view it, and tell me if you are men or women when you reply, please.

Peace and love!

I, too, am a woman.
And I can assure you that cheap titillation in gaming is a problem.

There's a difference between sexy presentation, and pandering to a presumed straight male gaze. And most of the gaming industry - particularly the AAA business - is hell bent on doing that.
pandering to a presumed straight male audience is reductive for two reasons:
1) it nurtures a culture of objectifying and pedestaling female bodies.
2) it presumes that a game can't keep male audience attention without cheap visual thrills.

it's important to remember that a majority of "sexy" female characters are designed by men, from a straight male perspective. so that's not really an expression of confidence, that's a committee of men depicting their idea of a liberated woman, which is flawed at best.

it's been a problem in games, and the fact that discussions still come up on the topic shows that it's still a problem.

but heaven forbid we do anything that will upset the status quo, even though 46% of gamers are female and women hold 60% of the buying power in the U.S. gotta keep those manchildren happy, lest you be accused of "pandering."

Well, it is obvious you and I have completely different perspectives on this. For me, that woman is super attractive and someone I want to be like. I certainly do not see her as someone who is only meant for men. And as I asked, what is wrong with giving men some eye candy? She does not become less attractive to women just because she looks sexy, does she?

So while I respect your viewpoint, I completely disagree and I think my first post actually kind of answered your reply as to why.

Well, I'm another woman too and I think- it's fine to have eye candy for guys, after all they are a part of this too.

But the problem comes when it's just CONSTANT pandering. It's like, why is a Bikini Armor even a thing? Because that's a completely and utterly a fanservice. But when it's asked "why not do it to guys too", well that's shifting the problem isn't it?

I feel like if you want to be fan service, then do it on both, or none at all :V Don't do it on one side only.

TL;DR: My biggest problem comes from the fact it's very prevalent in industry than anything else.

@MiniSara oh, I'm not here to get you to agree with me. I'm here to tell you that you're wrong.

None of us are wrong, we just have different views on it. I know I am not wrong, but I also know people have different opinions on this.

it's prevalent to the point of being pervasive.
it's to where anyone who questions the status quo, or calls out problems within it, is presented as the one that's wrong. and that's garbage.

Do you not think there is a ton of scantily clad guys in JRPGs, too? I see them everywhere. Full of bare chests galore!

And of course, the thong outfit of my favourite character is not logic. But does it have to be logic? I do not think so. Videogames are full of things which are not logic, so why would outfits follow real world rules?

Not as much as female side. (and this brings to mind how topless guys are far more normal even irl too... like it's a little weird I guess).

And I still say that bikini armor should at least be phased out, or if they insist to have it, then have guys armor be the same then. Make it more scantily lad the more you upgrade them, not more buff / gain furs / whatever :V

I do not know about you, but I would not like to see a sexy guy in a thong, that would just look ridicolous. And imagine a guy with a butt that big and soft! No thanks!

@CharlieSmile probably can.

@MiniSara Not saying it must be a thong, but just treat their armor the same :V If the girl's armor gets more revealing, it's only fair that the guy's get it too.

Well, each to their own, I guess. I think it is more sexy when guys wear really fancy uniforms. And when their lower arms stick out in the bare!

I can respect everything you say, but this is factually wrong. Gender is based on chromosones, hormones and a lot of other stuff. Society cannot change biology.

MiniSara

darkfenrir

Isn't it sex that is biology?

Let's not go too far into this thing though.

@MiniSara Also, I do like fancy uniforms... for everyone in the end. Like everyone in fancy uniform is just great... (I just like seeing both guys and girls being great looking to be honest so...)

Anti-Matter

Hmm...
About Woman and Man in videogames, i was thinking like these :
1. I have very unusual interest with Girlie or Fashion games like Style Savvy / Cooking Mama / JS Girls / AKB48 + Me. But, i really dislike with too sexy females with big boobs and minimalist clothing. The difference is, i like Female characters as long they still appropriate enough, not too sexy, targeted to female audiences (Feminine), not targeted to male audiences (Sex appeals). By the way, i adored Sailor Moon when i was Grade 5 - 6 Primary School student.

2. For Male characters, i really adore Six pack muscular guys. I really want to see Shirtless Male characters treated as equal as Sexy Female characters on video games. If we can getting along with Shirtless males on Boxing games, why not Shirtless males on different games ?

OK, let us not derail this thread, but I strongly disagree with the notion that gender is social.

Back on topic, that woman I posted, there are no men in that game. Do you still think she is bad, and do you understand my arguments about her?
