HOW TO SUBMIT: To submit your level, make sure it is uploaded, then post the level name and course ID as a reply to this thread. When voting begins I will also be encouraging everyone to follow one another in Super Mario Maker, and to give all of the submissions stars, so that we can create a community of level designers and help increase one another's upload limits! There are more details on this below.

HOW THIS WORKS:

The rules are simple: I will post a "theme", and the challenge is to create a level that fits that theme. How it fits that theme is entirely up to you! Two weeks later all of the levels and their course IDs will be listed here, and people will be able to play the levels and vote for which one they feel is the best. You will have two weeks to vote!

HOW TO VOTE

Vote by simply replying to this thread. In our reply please state the user you are voting for (remember to include the "@" symbol to tag them), and the title of their level. Although there are no specific rules saying you can't vote for yourself, all of these levels are pretty great, so if you do vote for yourself we will silently judge you.

Voting for the previous theme has closed, and voting for the new theme has not started yet.

Sounds like something I'd be interesting in, although I have no idea what I'd be going for that kind of theme. I would suggest, due to the nature of this kind of level editor, that the themes should be based on some kind of mechanic, say "castle", or "no enemies", or "chain chomps". Because unlike Pushmo where you design something and then form the puzzle out of it, this game it's form the puzzles, then design it (In part because of the limited color scheme). Now maybe design->puzzle is better for a competition like this (i.e. who can make the best gameplay out of a strange theme), but since I'm gameplay oriented first and have a limited number of uploads, I may not be able to make a level I feel is good enough to submit, depending on the theme.

But of course, these are just my thoughts. Honestly we could probably just do a mix between design and mechanic themes and it's no problem. I just felt the need to mention this before this thing gets started full force.

@MasterWario: For sure! I guess what I was thinking was like... there are a lot of things that come in red or blue varieties - red koopa troopas, spinies, buzzy beetles. Most of the stuff is either red, blue, or green when you really break it down - so I figured a theme like this would mean people can make any kind of level they want for this first one. Essentially it means there are virtually no restrictions.

There's also level themes themselves - giant mushroom platforms come in red, the underground palettes are largely blue, and a fire based castle level would be very red! I just didn't want the first challenge to be too specific to a mechanic that would restrict people, as everyone is probably very enthusiastic about whatever they're making right now.

But I would love to know what others think! We can always change the theme just... what would be an iconic theme for the 30th Anniversary, that wouldn't be too restricting?

Thought I'd start this rolling, best thing about a vague theme is how it's interpreted.

SMB3 Castle Stage that takes place in both a Red and a Blue Zone. Split pathways that come together at the end. Warning though - one is more difficult than the other. I'll let you work out which is which

My submission is "Swimming Through Spiky Seas", course ID: **F14C-0000-0038-9741**

This levels is largely about platforming through an autoscrolling, underwater area, and showcases the functions of spinies and spike tops underwater.

I might take part in this if I'm fast enough to unlock the parts I need. I just got the game yesterday and I haven't made any levels yet since I wanted to start by playing levels made by random people to get me some ideas. I have an idea for this challenge but I'm not sure I'll be able to make it in time. I have 3 days to unlock things and make the level since I have other things to do this weekend. I won't be at my apartment so I can't access my Wii U. If I can't make it in time I'll join the next one.

So, red and blue, huh? I'll see what I can come up with, although I don't have all the parts unlocked yet (and being the Animal Crossing purist I am, I don't like to cheat at such things). It occurs to me that I've already made a level featuring Mega Man and spinies, so I could just go with that, but maybe I could manage something more fitting.

@iBazly: Meh, spamming the screen full of blocks to make the game think I'm doing stuff doesn't seem any more legit than changing the date. And either way it's just tedious; I'd rather not bore myself when the pieces will come on their own anyway.

I didn't sound annoyed about being tagged, did I? Because I really do appreciate it. But, uh, I guess I should remind you that the Pullblox contest wasn't originally my idea either - it was started by bboy2970, although I kept it going for much longer (because I'm stubborn like that).

Alright, finally got 'er done!

@iBazly @Zyrac Seeing you two post back and forth sure brings back memories. The biggest reason why I joined the forums in the first place was to participate in those Pushmo/Crashmo contests way back when. In fact, my first post ever on the forums was a Magnemite puzzle for the Crashmo contest thread. Good times, good times. I try going back to those games every once and a while, but I really burnt all the way out.

So I guess we'll see how far this thread goes!

Alright, mine's done! Ooh, this embedding function is cool.

Kinda the same basic idea as MasterWario's - red enemies in a blue cave - but I went in quite a different direction with it.

I've created this level:

To get the blue and red for the theme, I used a water section for the blue, and a castle section for the red. However, the obstacles for the two sections have been mixed up, meaning castle obstacles will appear in the water section, and water obstacles will appear in the castle section.

Edit: the level is displaying correctly now. Thanks @Fink-Nottle for the help
