Topic: Your worst nightmare - how will Nintendo Bork things up this time?

N64 - went with expensive, space-limited carts instead of CDs. Lost Final Fantasy VII as a result.

GameCube - Couldn't play DVDs. PS2 could.

Wii - well, despite it's flaws, it was a massive hit, so this one gets a pass.

Wii U - too expensive, underpowered again, launched with Nintendo land and yet another new super Mario Bros.

What next? Hopefully they'll get everything right after such a hype cool reveal, but you never know... What's the thing that Nintendo could reveal that would get you to groan and clutch your head and scream 'OMG NINTENDO! WHY DO YOU KEEP DOING THIS TO YOURSELF? WHAT WERE YOU THINKING??'

For me, it'd be that they'd decided to get away from the Wii style so much that there were no motion controls at all any more and that the new splatoon would have a twin-analogue-stick control scheme. My head would explode from so much nope.

What's your worst Switch nightmare, fellow Nintendo Life forum users?

For me it would be games and save data not being tied to a proper account system but instead having a situation like Wii/Wii U/DSi/3DS where if there's a hardware failure or something like that then everything is lost forever.

There could be a number of things that could mess up the Switch. For starters, what is the maximum (assuming it supports them) size SD card it can take?

Being it will be less powerful than either competitor, how much of an impact on resources will that have for third parties when it comes to asking "is it worth it?"

What is the online infrastructure like? Is it any good, especially important question for third party developers who may want to make use of it - COD being a prime example. And this can tie in with how easy is it to add DLC, season pass or patches to games.

And finally my main concern is production - can they produce enough? Nintendo have not been good in this department as of recently with their products. Though hopefully it will be better managed being it is a big new console and not an accessory.

Underpowered for a home console, terrible battery life, -STILL- no party chat system, no decent onboard storage most likely, no proper account system.

There's a whole lot that is probably going to hold back the console due to Nintendo's own hard-headed-ness. You just gotta take your pick.

I'm still going to get and enjoy the thing, but as of right now I don't see it being some triumphant return for them

@Grumblevolcano Your games are tied to an account system now though. If your hardware fails on you, call Nintendo up and they'll delink your account from your old hardware and link it to your new one.

Not perfect obviously, but it's there.

@IceClimbers I guess to get some perspective on this matter, you have to imagine a different company doing the same thing. Take Valve for example, with Steam.

Imagine your Steam account was locked to your PC, and that if your PC died and you had to buy a new PC, you'd have to call up Steam Customer Service, explain what's happened, give them a bunch of details, and then wait for them to transfer your Steam account to your new PC.

That sounds like something that you would have had to do back in the 90s.

For me, it has to be third party support. Owning a Wii U and just a Wii U meant that I've missed out on the past 4 years of big AAA titles from devs such as Bethesda, Rockstar, EA, etc. and that sucks. If the Switch doesn't get some kind of third party support throughout its lifetime, it will definitely 'bork' up my experience.

Even if it's ports of older titles like Skyrim... please?

Too many rehashes in the lineup. Last thing I want is to see NSMB mentality bleed more and more into their lineup, that was bad enough in 8th gen.

@Portal_King Hey, I never said it was perfect. That's the main thing that needs done - untying the accounts from the hardware. That won't be done on 3DS and Wii U obviously.

Also, had to both shudder and laugh at the thought of Valve's customer service. That's probably the one area they're absolutely horrible at.

@Bolt_Strike But who could resist a New Super Mario Bros. Switch? Everyone...? Oh okay.

if Nintendo doesn't get the 3rd party support we (or maybe just me) expect. Like, what if the "Skyrim" we saw wasn't Skyrim Remastered, or what if it was a smaller, spin-off experience, Skyrim Adventures...

Come on Nintendo, get some real 3rd Party software, you can still make your unique games but don't make me have to have another system...

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

My worst nightmare was digital only, and thank goodness it didn't come to pass.
Other big problem would be that Nintendo didn't pursue third parties in an active manner. Moneyhat a few exclusives here and there and I will be happy.

I have a chronic lack of time, for everything.

Now playing: Okami HD, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

Have interesting 60 FPS games with primary colors. That killed the Wii U after all (half joking).

@Portal_King @IceClimbers The fact the process so far is more than just sign into your NNID on the new console and everything is waiting for you to redownload (including save data) is not good enough. Even with the current setup (Wii U, 3DS), you still lose all your save data.

I don't think there's such a thing as a single thing that makes a console fail to sell. And even if there was it's not usually something that hits the console evenly across regions and demographics. For example in our heads we kinda know the global sales of each platform right? To a degree. The Wii U has done poorly, the PS4 has done well. Portable consoles are in a decline. So when you see global platform sales for this gen and it's this:

#1 3DS
#2 PS4
#3 XBOne
#4 PSVita
#5 Wii U

You say, "yeah, that's about right". But then you look at regional sales....

North America:
#1 3DS
#2 PS4
#3 XBOne
#4 Wii U
#5 PSVita

Hmm, Wii U and Vita swapped. Turns out in the US the Wii U outsold the Vita about 3:1. Still not a hit but still. What about Japan?

#1 3DS
#2 PSVita
#3 Wii U
#4 PS4
#5 XBOne

Yup. And that's why there's no one simple answer to why a console did well and another didn't. If there was data for it you could probably do a similar thing across demographics. These things are far too unpredictable. You can't point to one thing or another and say that will be the thing that will make it not sell. Because in another demographic or region? In an extreme example that might be what makes it a hit. And the same the way.

So I'll answer the thread question in a different way. What must Nintendo do to make sure that this thing sells well. And I think there's only one answer to that. They need to appeal to the portable gaming loving Japan and the higher end home console gaming of the US. They need to get Sports and Racing games for Europe, Shooters for the US and wacky RPGs for Japan. If they can do that? Their odds of doing well will be better.

@skywake I thought the PS4 passed the Wii U in Japan about a month ago. I know, the numbers are probably not far off, but I noticed that you had them swapped. Just nitpicking.
