Games like Boxboy and Kirby's Blowout Blast are noninated as well as Rocket League. However Yooka-Laylee is not there. Is NL seriously trying to tell us that they think Boxboy is better than Yooka-Laylee?
I've just had a decent debate with one of the NL staff over the quality of Yooka-Laylee as a game. That staff member said Yooka-Laylee is a great game but refused to admit the truth about exactly how good Yooka-Laylee is. I don't know what NL has against Yooka-Laylee.
We can't even vote on the game. Digital Foundry say the Switch port is Yooka-Laylee is one of the best ports on the console. Not even that can get NL to put Yooka-Laylee on this best of 2017 games list to vote on.
NintendoLife, I am disappointed. You know full well that Yooka-Laylee should be on the list for us to vote on. Sure it has zero chance to win, because of Breath of the Wild. That's fine. The disappointment comes from the fact that you still refuse to admit that it's one of the best games on the Switch so far.
The NL's 2017 game of the year list. Leaves off some of the best Switch games, and includes some very obscure titles that few people liked. Such a shame.
@NaviAndMii The honest truth is that posting a poll for this is purely a formality. Everyone knows BOTW is GOTY and not by a small margin but a landslide. The only other game that's even going to have a respectable minority of the votes will be SMO. Everyone else might as well not even show up.
That said, the list of nominations WAS really weird and I can't even understand how they came up with it. Master Blaster has a nom but ARMS doesn't? How exactly does that work? If this was a normal year and BOTW wasn't the really, really obvious winner, and I was a huge fan of some smaller game over it, I would have felt disgruntled too.

Remind yourself that overconfidence is a slow and insidious killer.
Dude, I just had a look through your comments and this is really bothering you, isn't it?
I wouldn't worry if people (including this fine website we find ourselves on) don't have the same appreciation for the game that you clearly have. Skyward Sword is one of my favourite Zeldas, and I absolutely loved the motion controls, but I'd be hard pressed to find many people who would agree with me
At the end of the day you enjoyed it to the extent that you did and it has value to you for that reason. I don't think nintendolife or any users on here not sharing your feelings degrades that in any way. Seems like you're expending a lot of energy being indignant about it, but differing opinions are what makes this place so interesting, no?
Edit; @JasmineDragon also a whole load of what you said with cherries on top
@JasmineDragon Yeah, very true! I can't actually see the full list any more since I voted (for Breath of the Wild, of course!) ..but, if I remember correctly, didn't Mario Kart 8 Deluxe also receive a nomination just for adding Battle Mode, a couple of characters and 1fps to an existing game? ..odd selections indeed!
This list was made from the top 5 in the voting for each individual category (Switch retail/eShop and 3DS retail/eShop). If a game you like isn't on the list (Yooka-Laylee or anything else) it's because enough of the readers did not even vote for it as one of the top 5 Switch eShop games. This list wasn't made by the NL staff, it was made from readers' votes. And I'm almost certain I remember Yooka-Laylee being one of the 20 choices for best Switch eShop game, although I could be wrong.
@the8thark Sorry to tell you this, but they specifically state how they picked those 20 titles, maybe you should read the article next time. Suffice to say, there's five of each category, which apparently Yooka-Laylee didn't get voted in the top 5 Switch Eshop games.
It should have made the top 5 cut. Also I did read the article.
Also you're not sorry at all, don't lie.
It's not hard for NL to put out a list of the best games on the console and people vote on them. The list really lacks some of the best games on it.
Note Well - I said best games, not gales I like. There's a few games I really don't like but should be on the list. Still it matters not as Botw is clearly the best game on the year. And I think the people here will vote on it.
Simply too late. November and especially December games often get neglected as nobody had the time to really play these games. You can only hope that Nov/Dec games are remembered and moved to the next year GOTY votes.
There's an even better solution for GOTY votings though. Do them at the end of January and not in the middle of December. I always thought GOTY presentations at the end of the year are clickbait articles and lack the necessary timing. Obviously it's unfair to neglect every game that comes out in December, and websites that make votings as early as December shouldn't be taken super-seriously anyway.
@the8thark then why didn't it? I mean, isn't this a vote for which is the most popular game? If noone voted for Yooka to make the shortlist then I'm not too sure how that is NL's fault.
If you look closely through the website's archives, there were actually two GOTY articles: a longlist and a shortlist. The shortlist was chosen from whatever was most popular in the longlist.
If you inspect the dates, you can see that voting for the longlist opened on December 13th. Yooka-Laylee was released on Switch on December 14th. Whether or not it was actually included in the longlist I can't remember, but the simple fact that no-one could have played it on Switch at that point would have severely hindered its chances of getting enough votes to make the shortlist anyway.
So there's your answer: it missed the cut-off point.
Yooka Laylee isn't the kind of game that hardcore gamers love. NintendoLife for better or worse is reviewed by very hardcore gamers who seem to love hardcore gamer games.
It's not game of the year material for the vast majority of people. It's more or less a nostalgia trip for the people who played Banjo-Kazooie, not a fantastic new experience that millions upon millions of people are in love with.
