Topic: Why I think Youtube and Netflix could be locked behind the online service

At home I use my chromecast or tablet for Netflix. The chromecast I use because I can browse on a device before picking what to watch. My tablet because it's the biggest portable screen I have.

When I am away from home? I'll download a few movies for offline use. And again I'll use my tablet because, unlike the Switch, storage isn't limited on my tablet. And again it is the biggest portable screen I have.

I can't see any scenario where Netflix on the Switch will change how I consume Netflix. It certainly won't be something I see anyone paying a subscription to get access to. At the same time if it comes to Switch? That'll be nice, I don't think it'd somehow ruin the Switch and it's "game only" focus. Personally I couldn't care less either way

I don't know, but I hope it lets you download the contents as mobile and tablet Netflix do, because an on-the-go system can't rely so much in online connection, although games like Mario Tennis Aces don't take that into consideration.

@Steel76 I agree with what you said about the wii and wii u being less dedicated because they both had apps on them.Just because the wii an wii u had apps on them did not make less dedicated consoles, they were still dedicated consoles. Every console from the PS3 and 360 onwards were dedicated games consoles and they had apps on them(including Nintendo consoles,3ds wii wii u), so what is the Switch's excuse?

My bedroom TV don't have any of these apps, so being able to watch Netflix through the Switch would be VERY nice.

In specific scenarios like this it would be a nice to have. But after same time it's hardly a necessity. If you really needed Netflix on your bedroom TV you would have got a chromecast for it by now.

It's like when people created threads about how the Wii U lacked Blu-ray playback and before then the Wii and DVD playback. Sure if you have the console on a second TV and don't have a second player it'd be nice. But if you're in a house with spare TVs floating around if you really wanted a second player you would have got one already.....

They could announce them both in the next Nintendo Direct.

Never understood the rebuttal “ I have other devices for that” so to watch downloaded Netflix movies you would rather carry two devices instead of one?

@ValhallaOutcast if you want to use it without WiFi, you will still need a second device.

@Therad why? Netflix has download for offline viewing

For me, it doesn't make too much sense to lock a subscription service such as Netflix behind a subscription service (hell, it could even apply to YouTube what with the premium service having just been released). If you gotta pay for Switch Online, it would be a little strange to pay a fee to get to something you've already paid for.

Don't really see how Netflix could be locked behind Nintendo's paywall, when it already is locked behind its own paywall, given that it's a subscription service. Don't think that would fly. You'd be paying for your broadband and then Nintendo before being allowed to pay for Netflix. And this is apart from the fact that, as so many others have pointed out, Hulu is already available without a Ninty subscription. In short, this is so unlikely, I think we can shut down this thread...

Edit: I see @ChampEccentric makes exactly the same point!

Is it usual for subscription services to be locked behind another subscription service? I mean besides your internet. I can't imagine Netflix or YouTube Red would be happy about that.

Xbox 360 had everything behind their subscription. I know, because I nearly bought one to use as a media player.

@ValhallaOutcast sure. But it is a niche case. How often are people away without their phone?

Therad

ValhallaOutcast

@Therad never but if I already carried my switch to work for breaks and I could also watch Netflix on it I’d rather watch on the switch than hold my phone up for 30min to an hour

As I said, a niche case.

@Therad what part of it is niche? Watching Netflix or having breaks at work

I wouldn't be shocked if Nintendo did do that. but if Youtube and Netflix did came to Switch, would be a lesser reason to use those on my other consoles!

I actually donot thinkNintedo are toblame. From what Nintendohave said, it seems to be Youtube and Netflix that are reluctant to put their apps on the Switch.

Ultimately I still think it's mostly that it's not even close to being a priority because they simply don't want to have to make more Switches than they need to and change their whole production line just to sell more Switches to people who want to buy it as a cheap media tablet. They make Switches, sell them for close to cost, with the hope of making money selling software. PS1 sold buckets to people buying it as a cheap CD player, not interested in buying games. PS2 sold buckets to people buying it as a cheap DVD player, not interested in buying games. That benefitted Sony as they were also the media holder and were using gamers to subsidize the purchase of media disc players that cemented their medium as a standard. Crash was a trojan to make gamers pay to help Sony conquer the media industry. Wii sold buckets, later in its life, but not a lot of games, because people were buying it as a cheap Netflix streaming box. This did not help Nintendo. They had to make additional hardware to sell to people who were not really going to fund their business in any meaningful way.

It's not that Nintendo doesn't want to give Netflix features to people who bought a machine to play Zelda, Doom, and Fire Emblem on. It's that they don't want to accidentally entice everyone in Walmart to buy a Switch as a budget media tablet versus the million Samsung/LG/Apple tablets on the shelf and messing up their supply chain for people intending to buy Smash and Fire Emblem, things they'll actually make money from.

There's no anti-video conspiracy, I just think they're hesitant to enable that problem to exist in their distribution, and Switch is an easy target for that in a $300 tablet versus PS/XB as yet another set top box against a $99 Apple/Fire/PSTV.

@NEStalgia although I follow your argumentation to a wide extent, I do feel the Switch at $300 would be a REALLY expensive alternative for a simple media player tablet. There's way cheaper tablets with better/bigger screens and way better battery life. Or am I misunderstanding something in your comment?
