I had believed this from hearing it from others as well, but lately using split joy cons for lazy mode I noticed if the system goes to sleep and I pick up the left it would wake up. Going on Nintendos official website they list the specs for the left joy con also containing gyro and an accelorometer. Is it because Splatoon 2 only uses the right?

Most things seem to only take the right joycon into account, probably because using both would complicate things in most games, specially if you separate them.
But I would guess games with a handedness option can make the left joycon the dominant one.
(and well, obviously, you're able to play some games with just one joycon and motion controls, like Mario Kart)
Granted, I find using motion controls in Mario Kart using only one joycon is a pain. Much easier if using the full pair and they're inserted into the controller grip.
@FaeKnight : If you mean using a single Joy-Con without the wheel attachment, then yes, they are much too small (heck, the considerably longer Wii Remotes were also a pain to use without the attachment back in the day).
Porygon did nothing wrong.

@Trajan : I believe the myth has been perpetuated by people who assume that because the console is fully usable (for the most part) with Hori's D-pad Joy-Con that it must only be the right Joy-Con that detects motion.
Games like ARMS utilise both. 1-2 Switch is mostly motion based and both players need to use motion to play.
Given the shareable nature of the console and the fact that the Joy-Con are more or less successors to the Wii Remote and Nunchuk combo, it would make no sense to deprive either one of the Joy-Con from detecting motion.
When I first tried motion control steering, I over corrected a bit till I got use to it Then managed to 3 star a Grand Prix that I'd previously been having trouble with. Tried it using a single joy con while in 2 player mode with my brother, and it was FAR too easy to over correct due to it requiring so much less movement to turn.
