@TheBigBlue
Some good taste in games there. Portal, Fire Emblem, Zelda TotK and Metroid Dread... 👨🍳 💋
I'd say Metroid Prime Remastered, Monster Hunter Rise + Sunbreak, Xenoblade Chronicles 3 + Future Redeemed, Triangle Strategy (if you like FE there's a good chance you'll love TS also), Bayonetta Trilogy, Astral Chain, Shin Megami Tensei V and Persona 5 Royal. Nier Automata iz really good and a quality Switch version. Super Mario Odyssey and 3D World are also exceptional. Ori Blind Forest and Will of the Wisps are probably the best metroidvanias that aren't Metroid I've played.
There's just so many.

People put too much value on "precedent" for this kind of thing. Obviously what happened before was done for a reason so guessing the same will happen again isn't the worst strategy. But each console lives in it's own time with different market conditions, different audiences, different libraries
Case and point Galaxy 2 was largely based on levels that were created during the making of Mario Galaxy. And this was in an era before Nintendo consoles could have DLC. Galaxy 1 released in 2007, about a year into the Wii. Galaxy 2 was 2010, there was no talk of Wii U at that point and sales were basically at their peak
For comparison Odyssey was 2017 and fairly close to the Switch launch. We're now in 2023 and are firmly in the wind down period of the console cycle. Not the same situation
I feel like we would have seen an Odyssey 2 if it was coming. Given Nintendo will want to launch the next console with something big and they JUST released a new mainline Zelda, I'm still in the camp that thinks the next one is a launch window title that we'll probably see sooner than later.
Currently Playing: Metroid Prime 4: Beyond (NS2); Corpse Factory (PC)
Nintendo had delayed Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom for over a year, so they can focus on polishing the game, the game was already complete when they anounced it delay.
@Professor_Plumber Probably if a successor is coming next year. And unless Nintendo announces multiple first-party projects for Switch soon, that's looking increasingly likely.

Yeah, at this point in time, if Odyssey 2 was a real game, it would be at least announced by now, as that would be a big seller I imagine. I just don’t see Odyssey 2 happening, sorry Arlo. A brand new Mario title a few months after the next console’s launch makes more sense, probably a 3D game at that, with 2D Mario further down the line, if it’s a new 2D game and not a port.
@TheBigBlue Only if it was a TotK situation where it's a direct sequel, but also wildly more ambitious than the original. At that point, it'd feel like a proper new mainline title to me anyway vs something like Galaxy 2.
One way or the other, it has to be coming. If Nintendo hasn't learned by now that they need to launch every new console generation with either 3D Mario or 3D Zelda, I'm not sure what to say at this point.
I think there's 2 very notable outcomes:
1. There's a general Direct in the lead up to Pikmin 4 on July 21st (late May, June or early July) and Mario gets announced as being the big fall/holiday title, Nintendo chooses to go all out for the late Switch era creating essentially a repeat of 2017.
2. The most that appears regarding Directs is a Pikmin 4 Direct in June, an Indie World in August and a Partner Showcase at some point. A few 1st party things get twitter dropped and maybe there doesn't even end up being a September general Direct. At that point Nintendo has chosen to save a lot of stuff for their next system.
Point 1 feels most likely to me, especially given Nintendo's comments about the fiscal year.
I'll be interested to see how dark and radio silent Nintendo will go after Pikmin 4's release. It'll be weird seeing Nintendo lean on DLC for TotK, Pokemon, and Splatoon 3 to pad their first party "release" schedule for the rest of 2023. According to the recent investor Q&A, Furukawa stated there are no plans for a hardware price cut for the current fiscal year (ending March 2024). Could we go ten months until we get another general Direct in early 2024?
I think that's where we're heading.
Switch Physical Collection - 1,537 games (as of December 22nd, 2025)
Switch 2 Physical Collection - 4 games (as of December 8th, 2025)
@Magician, @Grumblevolcano, @Ralizah @TheBigBlue e @ProfessorPumbler i expect for the fall/holiday game this year, Metroid Prime 4 and a brand new 2D Mario, Nintendo is surely saving the next 3D Mario for Switch sucessor, be it Super Mario Odyssey 2 or a completely new concept for the franchise, surely Nintendo EPD 8 might be working on someting for all this year, i have two possibities in what they are possibly developing right now, the next 3D Mario or a 2D/3D Donkey Kong game that either of one will release on Switch sucessor, the port of Super Mario 3D World on Switch was primarily developed by Nintendo Software Development, with some assitance by Nintendo EPD 8, the game didnt take a consirable amount of resources/time to develop, based on that EPD 8 next project is either the next 3D Mario or the rumored 2D/3D Donkey Kong game, i putting my bets on the next 3D Mario as a launch title for Switch sucessor.
@XandertheWise For the summer? Probably whatever games I’m buying next month. I’m gonna get Tears Of The Kingdom (hopefully) and maybe one other game which will either be Advance Wars, or some Mario game I guess

But will the Next system have an Achievement or Trophy System, thats what i'm interested to know.
i enjoy Mario Kart Double Dash and Cups of Tea !!!!
@Professor_Plumber
I think you misunderstood my post. I was saying that you can't look at "precedent" like this to draw conclusions because the landscape is constantly changing. My DLC point I meant more along the lines of if they had as many left over ideas for Odyssey as they had for Galaxy we probably would have had DLC. That wasn't an option for Galaxy. Also if they were in that position for Odyssey we would have had something sooner. It's been 6 years and we had Bowser's Fury in the meantime
Could there be another Mario game in the works? Well I'm sure there is. Could it be this year? Maybe, probably not with the Switch winding down though. Could it be Odyssey 2? Maybe. I wouldn't bet on that though, seems unlikely, that's a very specific prediction
The only two certainties in gaming are that the hardware that's available improves over time at a fairly regular rate and gamers are always looking for the next thing. This has the effect of generally limiting the life of platforms. The Switch is heading towards that wall, you can see it in competing hardware and sales. Outside of that? You can't really predict anything
Hm, so many rumor and leaker people like Switchforce and whomever else last year kept throwing random dates at the wall and hoping one of them stuck in terms of predicting a general direct. Funny enough, it never happened. I will be right here to see if a general direct does happen next month. Frankly, those chances are slim, a mini/partner direct is a better management of expectations. Pikmin 4 clips will probably be dropped via Twitter to showcase some new stuff like Splatoon 3’s new update features. A whole direct for Pikmin 4 is a giant stretch. Nintendo didn’t even host a direct for Tears Of The Kingdom, and that game is massive! Nintendo doesn’t produce these directs every week you know. Pikmin 4 won’t get a direct, and like I said before, a smaller direct for June if a direct at all is more likely. Maybe I’m less optimistic, but it all makes sense really.
