An OLED panel, if anything, makes MORE sense on a portable device not less. Relatively speaking the cost difference is less because cost with panels scales with size/yeild. So smaller OLEDs are significantly cheaper per square cm than larger OLEDs. Then there's the battery advantage over LCDs. And in any case, the advantages of OLEDs don't disappear with a smaller screen. We're talking contrast and response times, these things matter regardless of screen size

I guess you could argue an LCD panel can be brighter. This can be true. But even there, we see contrast as brightness not brightness itself. And the Switch OLED panel is plenty bright in any case

Yes, the new hardware could have an LCD screen. Yes this could be to trim costs in an effort to hit an agressive price. But lest not kid ourselves, an LCD screen would be a downgrade. A downgrade I could personally live with given I mostly play on-TV. But still a downgrade

Here here! Listening to folk go on about freedom of speech or how opinions are subjective therefore their opinion can't be wrong is infuriating.

Only a blind individual would fail to see how substantially better OLED is over LCD.

Ha, has a dethroning just occurred? An hour ago, my copy of Tears of the Kingdom was delivered. Just now, the Breath of the Wild poster in my house fell off the wall!

You guys had me at blood and semen.

@Giancarlothomaz Fair dos. I think if I had a big budget third party game to release, I'd give Tears of the Kingdom some breathing room too. Cough cough, sorry, cough, I mean, more development time cough cough.

@gcunit You better replace it with a TotK poster...or some holy water. Ganon is in your house.

Switch library of games is gonna go down in history as the absolute pinnacle of Nintendo software.

Just as we look back on the GameCube and reminisce about getting Zelda Windwaker, Zelda Twilight Princess, Metroid Prime 1 and 2, F-Zero GX, Fire Emblem Path of Radiance, etc... with some standout 3rd party titles.

One day, 20 years from now we're gonna look back on Switch the same way. The system that gave us Zelda Breath of the Wild, Zelda Tears of the Kingdom, Super Mario Odyssey, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, Metroid Prime Remastered, Metroid Dread, Metroid Prime 4 (even if it's a Switch 2 release, I'm pretty sure it'll still come to Switch), Fire Emblem Three Houses and Engage, Xenoblade Chronicles Trilogy, Luigi's Mansion 3, Splatoon 2 and 3, Bayonetta Trilogy, Shin Megami Tensei V, Pikmin 4, etc, with a whole host of standout 3rd party titles (Portal 1/2, Persona 5 Royal, Nier Automata, etc etc).

That day will come. Someone can dig up this post on an internet archive site in the future to see what we were talking about during this generation and determine whether we recognized how great it was at the time.

@Ralizah
I definitely don't wanna go back to LCD. Even so, there's no chance I'm not pre-ordering Switch 2 for day 1 delivery. I'd rather have Switch 2 on an LCD screen than no Switch 2 at all. If and when an OLED revision drops, I'll upgrade. There's just no way I could live in a world where Switch 2 exists and I don't immediately own it.

That being said, I would keep my Switch OLED for any games that don't see a significant benefit via BC. Because if they're gonna look and run the same, I'm going OLED every time. But if a game gets framerate notably improved or had sub-standard res and gets a resolution increase... I'll deal with the LCD.

I just finished Advance Wars 2's campaign (finished the first game's campaign before Future Redeemed released), definitely feel that Advance Wars 1+2 Re-Boot Camp is a strong contender for GotY for me so far. I don't remember how far I got in the GBA originals on Wii U VC but the quality of life improvements and the addition of casual difficulty (it's more like what a newer game's "normal" difficulty would be like) made the remakes more enjoyable. I'll check out more of the War Room stuff later on in the year but right now I'm moving on to Return to Dream Land Deluxe.

Its not even a "contender" as far as I'm concerned. Unless something absolutely unprecedented happens, it's easily the best game I'll play all year, and probably the next several. Which is really saying something given Metroid Prime Remastered is one of my favorite games ever made, and Pikmin 4 will probably end up on my shortlist of all time greats. And Xenoblade 3 Future Redeemed, while a masterful expansion is it's own right, isn't quite on the same level.

Tears of the Kingdom makes me realize how hungry I am for something refreshing and different. To date, only 1 other game has provided a similar experience to TotK (that being BotW), and that was over half a decade ago. I suppose Immortals Fenyx Rising did attempt it, with moderate success.

Over the years, memories of what a true masterpiece feels like to play start to fade. Then you play Tears of the Kingdom and get a sudden jolt that reminds you.

TotK isn't a GotY contender.

When you have around 50 perfect scores from review outlets you're the game to beat during GotYs.

Conversely, Elden Ring had 44 and GoW: Ragnarok had 52, on PS5.

@JaxonH Nintendo are the unpredictable ones of course, for all we know Prime 4 could end up being the big holiday title. In any case, it's nice seeing all the excitement out there for TotK.

@JaxonH
In my opinion, Switch games library started to show some downgrades for the 3rd party games and it made me nervous to consider 3rd party games on Switch especially the 3rd party multi console games so I will pick the PS4 / PS5 version as possible for having better performance and I build my Switch 3rd party games from 3rd party exclusives on Switch and 3rd party remastered from older Nintendo machines

@JaxonH, @Grumblevolcano e @Magician Tears of the Kingdom is quite obivious is gonna be the true winner of 2023, the GOTY of this year, few games can managed to reach the apeal of the game, Tears of the Kingdom will be talked for 30 years or more and will be the basis for future open world games, just like Breath of the Wild was.

The big AAA games feel so formulaic by comparison, with no real, extensive environmental interaction or true player freedom in how to overcome puzzles and obstacles without the game telling you what to do step by step.

You play TotK and it just reminds you that AAA devs have learned practically nothing from BotW. This is the true evolution of gameplay we should be getting in games.

@Anti-Matter
That's why you do research and play the good ones. The vast majority of the 3rd party games I play on Switch look spectacular.

Btw, all you do is post about how you don't play Switch and play PS. That's cool, everyone has their preferences, but it gets old having you interject that fact over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again.

Take it to PushSquare or the PS forum, please. We're here to talk Switch.

Quick question that is probably obvious or answered somewhere. I finally went ahead and got a new Switch (got the Zelda one and letting the kids have the original). I transferred my account over, but it's still blank with nothing on it. Do I just have to re-download the games and things I've already bought on the new system and everything should be fine, complete with save data? Or is some stuff stuck on the old system and/or old SD card? Thanks.
