It's so good.

But it's a game that has a lot of complex mechanics, and if you're new it can take a while to learn the ropes.

But you shouldn't let that dissuade you, because if you commit to giving the game a genuine shot, you may find your new favorite series of all time.

I still remember when I bought Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate on Wii U, played for an hour, got bored and shelved it. It wasn't until a co-worker who bought a Wii U just to play MH3U convinced me to give it another try and go hunt with him.

600 hours later, I'm binging entire weekends without sleep, calling into work... never in my life have I been so utterly absorbed into a video game.

Now, I've put in over 3,000 hours spanning 5 games across 6 platforms. I even studied Japanese for 6 months so I could understand the Japanese import of MHXX on Switch (before MHGU was announced as being localized). I've NEVER committed to learning a new language just to play a video game... Until Monster Hunter, that is.

I can't recommend the game enough.

@old-dad MH Rise is a fantastic experience. It has a lot of depth and some mechanics are complicated to learn, but once you find a rhythm, it's immensely rewarding.

How does disney speedstorm not have a page on metacritic? I've never seen a big game not-be on metacritic.

I was curious to see the review scores for all platforms.

I've done precious little gaming since my trip last month. Like, a session of Vampire Survivors every night, which lasts 30 minutes or less, and I've played some Persona 5 Strikers with my nephew, but that's pretty much it. Not intentionally, but my behavioral patterns seem to automatically adjust after a period of time when I'm gaming heavily in order to avoid burnout.

It was a little annoying at first, since there are a few games I want to beat that I'm close on, but I'm actually happy about it now, because going directly from a 25+ hour Xenoblade 3 expansion to TotK two weeks later is going to consume an insane amount of my free time.

Currently Playing: Metroid Prime 4: Beyond (NS2); Corpse Factory (PC)

No plans atm, but then again, I had no plans to sell my PS4/X1 game collection yet ultimately did. So who knows what the future may bring.

I kinda like having the collection, along with the DS, 3DS, GC, Wii and Wii U collection. It feels like a hobbyist gamer display. But I have no desire to continue on with it beyond Switch. I wanted to collect, not hoard, and I do think there's a fine line between the two. Continuing to buy physical would err on the side of the latter, whereas capping it off with Switch feels like the fulfillment of the former. We're well into the digital era now, and I've got other things I want to spend money on. And buying digitally ensures there's no temptation to buy a game I'm not completely sold on, as there's no display or collectible value. So it's easier to whittle the purchases down to only the games I know I'll actually sink time into.

But phasing out of one physical collection, I phase into another with 4k blu-rays. For the first time in a long time, I decided to build a movie collection to enjoy this 4k OLED TV and 5.1.4 Atmos surround sound. And streaming adds compression- it looks good, really good actually, but 4k blu-rays are on another level entirely. Even some normal blu-rays on disc rival movies streamed in 4k.

So I boxed up my remaining PS4 games I didn't sell to make room, and already filled a full double-wide shelf with 4k blu-rays and blu-rays (for the movies not in 4k). All the classics I've seen and loved over the years, and plenty I've heard good things about. Just today I ordered the Panasonic UB820 4k blu-ray player, cause I'm tired of PS5 audio sending 2 channels when it's DTS:X, and XSX not reading triple layer discs, and neither supporting Dolby Vision... enough already.

But I think movies are a bit different since there's a tangible difference in quality between the digital streaming alternative, whereas with games, they look and play exactly the same either way.

I'm still not into VR, but I have recently come to appreciate AR and XR technology. I have a pair of Rokid Airs and preordered the Rokid Max releasing in May. I like the waveguide technology for AR glasses that are coming in 2024- they're so thin they look like normal glasses. Waveguide tech is a gamechanger.

I'm getting that "Mineko's Night Market" in September. Looks easy for an indie game.

Don't hesitate to tag me with any questions you may have. Best advice I can give you though, is that there are 14 weapon types, 11 blade master weapons and 3 ranged weapons. Some are big and slow, some really fast. I'd avoid the super slow weapons (like Greatsword) and the super fast weapons (Dualblades). The slow weapons are for experienced hunters, and the super fast weapons ingrain bad habits in new hunts that don't learn how to manage animation frames and anticipation.

But try them all- the game starts you off with one of each type that you can mess around with in the training area. Buried in the menu you can find weapon guides that teach moves and some combos. But once you find a weapon you gel with, I'd advise watching a YT tutorial video on the weapon to learn its intricacies and best combos. In MH, you ARE your weapon. You must learn it and know it like the back of your hand. Button mashing won't get you far. You need to know what you're doing before you press the buttons, and that requires practicing moves and combos. When I learn a new weapon I like to watch a YT tutorial, and pause it after they show something, then try it in game in the training area, then unpause and learn the next move, then pause and practice, rinse and repeat.

@JaxonH thank you for the offer. Got to try it out some last night but it will be the weekend before I give it a solid run. So far I have enjoyed what I've tried. Just the tutorial so far

A lot of new players struggle because of basic things the game doesn't make clear. I'd like to remove as many of those potential obstacles for you as I can.

One of the big ones is, you're slow as dirt with your weapon drawn. When hunting monsters and in combat, you'll paralyze your mobility if you're not sheathing your weapon between bursts of attacks. Always attack, attack, attack, sheath, dodge roll and reposition, rinse/repeat. I see new players fumbling around with weapon drawn constantly and they're moving at the speed of litigation. It's painful to watch.

Also, some settings in Options you should consider changing. Such as auto-sheath. I turn that off so I fully control when I do and don't sheath. Also turn on the outlines to see your character when you're behind an object. And turn on all the gyroscope settings, EXCEPT for camera control. That way when you hold ZL for aiming your wirebug, you can use gyro. And it'll activate when aiming ballista or throwing something.

I apologize in advance if this has been discussed here already, but has anyone seen the rumor from the Pokémon leaker regarding Game Freak working in a graphics patch for the next Switch? Everything else in the rumor regarding Pokémon DLC has been proven right so this is likely correct too. But I’m wondering based on this info that given Game Freak working on a graphics patch and the leaker referring to it as the “next Switch”, the next Switch might not be a Switch 2 but a Switch Pro — the Game Boy Color to the OG Switch’s Game Boy. So if that’s true, the true next gen Nintendo system might still be years away. What is everyone’s thoughts on this? I’d love to hear @JaxonH @skywake @Giancarlothomaz thoughts since they discussed next gen Switch the last time with me but in addition to them anyone feel free to comment!
