Ok... wow.

There's a new Fire Emblem style srpg releasing in February from the producer (or was it director? I can't remember) of Fire Emblem Path of Radiance

It seems much darker and grittier, with pretty high quality graphics for the genre.

But ya. If this is from the guy who made Fire Emblem Path of Radiance, I'm all over it.

And yes, it's coming to Switch also.

Redemption Reapers is backed by industry talent, including Fire Emblem series director and Kingdom Hearts III alum Masayuki Horikawa. The voice talent brings a similar catalog of experience, with Kyle McCarley (NieR: Automata), Allegra Clark (Dragon Age: Inquisition), David Lodge (Persona 5), and Lucien Dodge (Fire Emblem: Three Houses) all on board the project

And some character intros

@JaxonH i dint liked how gritty and bloody this game tone and look is, i tired of all games aiming for gritty/mature look, why cant we have more cheerful games, 98% of the games released in the game industry, is this bloody, gritty/mature tone

So it was a week or so ago that I finished Fire Emblem Echoes. I've since transitioned over to Stella Glow, also on the 3DS, and only plan on interrupting that when Fire Emblem Engage arrives.

Looks like I've found a new favorite genre, lol.

I love Stella Glow. It's an underrated gem.

But ya, I've grown rather bored of turn based JRPGs. They just... don't keep me engaged anymore. Too simple. Too basic.

Srpgs are the cure. Still turn based, but positioning on an XY plane with attack ranges makes things so much more interesting.

After jumping back into Fire Emblem Three Houses (Blue Lions playthrough), and then jumping back into Fire Emblem Fates and starting a Revelations playthrough, only stopping when Fire Emblem Engage released...

The genre hits hard. Still need to get back to Mario Rabbids Sparks of Hope and finish Triangle Strategy. Maybe after Fire Emblem (on second thought... nahhh, I'll probably just go back to Fates and Three Houses).

Lots of strategy games have filled the gap caused by Advance Wars’ indefinite delay over the past year. I do sometimes wonder if Nintendo’s just going to cancel that game if it’s not in the next Direct.

@Giancarlothomaz Mid to late 2025. The Switch would be discontinued 3-5 years later, but that’s just hopeful thinking.

@JaxonH I'll say this: I think the best turn-based JRPG combat systems (as seen in series like SMT and Bravely Default) beat out the best SRPG or action rpg combat. But, in general, in modern times, I'm more likely, on average, to enjoy SRPG combat than I am pure turn-based JRPG combat. if that makes sense.

With that said, one of my least favorite combat system types is when a JRPG just randomly adds in SRPG elements that slow everything down. Like the Trails in the Sky games, Radiant Historia, or the older Persona games. Either give me a biggish map to move my units around on, or just let me get on with the fight.

No way Nintendo's gonna introduce a new console this or next year. There's just too many big-name games launching in 2023 for them to ruin the hype train with a new console announcement.

I'd love the new console to be like a 3DS though, so that players with Switches can just... switch... to the new model.

When turn based JRPGs do it really well (SMTV, Persona 4/5, Final Fantasy X) I very much enjoy it. But I actually think, for me at least, the best SRPGs are more enjoyable than the best JRPGs. Mostly that's due to Fire Emblem but I'd also say it applies to Triangle Strategy and Mario Rabbids Sparks of Hope. That's not to denigrate the JRPGs. They just don't hold my interest all the way through to the end. Even now I have yet to beat Trails 1, 3, Persona 4, or 5, or SMTV. But I've beaten 5 Fire Emblems over the last decade alone.

I do intend to finish Persona and SMT though. Games are so good.

I strongly disagree, entirely because a Radiant Historia won't make me repeat 30-60 minutes of the same map because I lost the battle, and thus is better than nearly any strategy game I've ever played. :V

...it did make me at least feel like I was repeating a half hour of content trying to figure out the specific way to do certain quests that required re-treading story content though. That could be a bit annoying.

@kkslider5552000 Retrying challenging maps is part and parcel of a satisfying game experience, so that doesn't bother me. SRPG elements in otherwise ordinary JRPGs tend to just bog down gameplay for no reason.

RPGs that are real-time but not fully action often suck as well, combat-wise. Like Tales of... games that have clunky action combat, or the horrid mix of real-time and turn-based elements in Ni no Kuni's broken combat system.

@JaxonH I think MegaTen takes the cake for me in terms of most games I've completed in the last decade in a single franchise. Persona 4, 5, and 5R; SMT I, III, IV, IV: Apocalypse, and V; Digital Devil Saga 1 & 2; Soul Hackers; Devil Survivor: Overclocked; and Persona Q. That doesn't include games like Persona 1, Persona 3 FES, and Devil Survivor 2: Record Breaker that I pumped a non-trivial amount of time into as well.

Sounds like you should play Fire Emblem Engage.

One of its best aspects is the fact you won't need to repeat maps like back in the day. The new turn rewind mechanic let's you roll back actions move by move so you can course correct as needed. Normal difficulty provides infinite rewinds (hard and Maddening limit to 10). There's also Casual Mode where units don't die, which is what I started out with, but now that rewinds exist it's not needed nearly as much.

@Ralizah
Goodness. Is it fair to say you like the franchise? Maybe a wee bit
