@Buizel
Splatoon 3's Wave 1 is for the diehard Splatoon 1 fans. It's just a bonus. Like the playable Octoling for the multiplayer in Splatoon 2's Octo Expansion.
The real content is Wave 2.
@Budda for what's seemingly just a cosmetic "bonus" it seems strange they'd focus on that and not the main content of the expansion pass. Tbh it felt like something that should've been free content, or at least supplementary to something more substantial.
But I'm certainly not their target demographic. I personally don't even explore the Splatoon hubs, preferring to use the menus.
@Buizel
Like the Octo Expansion the main content, the real DLC, will probably release around 1 year after its release. And like the last time they just teased the DLC in a February Direct.
If you ask me, with Wave 1, we have more DLC content than we had with the Octo Expansion - for the same price. And playable Octolings were more pointless than a huge "nostalgic" hub, that you actually see visualy. Octolings are nice, but I don't pay attention who's an Inkling or Octoling. They get kind of "invisible".
@Bolt_Strike If the Switch is supposed to be their main console into 2024 and beyond, they need to do more than fill out the first half of 2023.
We don't know if it's going to be their main console beyond 2024. But if it is, they have plenty of time to fill out more than the first half of 2023, after the first half of 2023, not while they still have half a dozen exclusives in the pipeline yet to release. This has been their approach for some time. Focusing on games coming soon.
They need to signal that they have something on the horizon that could slot into those time periods so that people that might want a Switch can be confident it'll be supported for the foreseeable future
I see no evidence that suggests they need to do that. Switch is still selling. Market is not showing any signs of "needing assurance" to keep buying the system.
You can theorize all day about what people may think and how they may act, but I'm quite sure Nintendo's market analysts know better than you or I what they need to do. I can't count how many ppl theorized "nobody will buy Switch without a price drop" or "nobody will buy Switch if it's not getting AAA ports", or "they need to announce games beyond X time period or ppl won't buy Switch". Everyone always thinks they know what the masses will do, and they're almost always wrong.
So let Nintendo worry about selling their console, and let's just enjoy the games.
@skywake
I should be losing my mind, and I did shout at the top of my lungs when Metroid was announced, and I was so excited from all the games revealed yesterday I couldn't sleep due to nerves, and had to call in sick from work today...
So ya. You could say I'm pretty thrilled. Zelda, Pikmin and Metroid are some of my absolute favorite franchises, up there with Fire Emblem, Xenoblade and Monster Hunter. We knew about Zelda, and I'm reserving hype for that game til we get into May. But Pikmin 4 looked incredible. But it's Metroid Prime Remastered that deprived me of sleep. Been waiting sooooo many years for this.
And after sampling the goods, it's everything I always wanted it to be. It does have pointer gyro like Wii, it also has GameCube style where holding ZR activates gyro, but most importantly, if you set control scheme to "Dual Analog" but then change the Camera setting from Sticks to Gyro, you get dual analog gyro that rivals the best of any game I've played. It's far superior to the Wii pointer scheme, imo, as you turn the camera with R analog instead of pointing at edge of screen, yet you retain gyro aiming.
Getting multiple Level 5 games after they went dark in the west this whole generation is insanely hype. Fantasy Life i and DecaPolice look very good, and Rain Code is looking better than ever. Idk what it is, but that game really appeals to me. I think it's the art style and detective stuff.
GB and GBA games is hype. I'm paying $10 per YEAR thanks to the family plan and networking here in the forums for a group to join. Value just went up. We're gonna have Metroid Zero Mission, Metroid Fusion, Fire Emblem and Fire Emblem Sacred Stones on Switch. [angelic voices singing]
Do you realize we have Metroid Prime on Switch with Dual Analog gyro aiming and it looks close to a remake? That wasn't a dream. It was real! Spread the word. Metroid noobs, today you are being initiated!

Hey everyone, would anyone mind posting a video/screenshot from their Switch to Twitter right now? I'm currently working at the moment so am unable to do so myself but I'm curious as to whether the new API rules means it's harder to post stuff to the site or not
(tagging @Eel and @WoomyNNYes since they seem to like doing that especially!)

@Bolt_Strike I don't think the Direct itself suggests anything about hardware in 2024 given the purpose of February Directs was always about revealing the Spring/Summer lineup. With the exception of Splatoon 3 being announced in the February 2021 Direct for 2022, further away stuff was always an E3 and September thing.
Which leaves June, August and September. Pokemon Presents could answer June, Baten Kaitos 1+2 is Summer (Nintendo owns Monolith Soft so it counts) and I don't really see Nintendo having only Prime 1 available prior to Prime 4's launch so I'd guess Prime 2 releases around August/September with an announcement far enough away from Prime 1.
Given what we know so far, Nintendo's absence at E3 is probably the biggest sign if anything of hardware in 2024. But then again, if the 2nd half of 2023 is mostly ports/remasters and DLC they may prefer to do a 2020 style shadow drop announcements approach over the summer and then get back to announcing stuff normally in a September Direct for early 2024 releases.
@JaxonH Cheers! My Switch has an annoying problem where it sometimes crashes whenever I try to use the 'Send to Smart Device' option so I was worried these new rules would get rid of the only other way I had been sending them along XD

@JaxonH i cant wait to replay this masterpiece(Metroid Prime) in my Nintendo Switch) yay Nintendo listened to one of my complain, and now Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom is gonna have more enemie variety(Redead confirmed yay, i hope my controller rumble like crazy when they do it scream attack) now confirm tradicional Dungeons and underwater exploration, they confirmed undeground exploration, and i will be a happy Legend of Zelda fan and will buy this game day one)
You know, one thing I was thinking about after watching this direct was how hyped @JaxonH must be. Mostly because you've been super hyped about the releases over the tail end of last year. An enthusiasm I didn't really share with the exception of Bayonetta 3. After this Direct but? I'm looking at the next 6 months and for the first time in a while there are a LOT of games upcoming that I'm pretty hyped about. So either @JaxonH is completely losing his mind after this Direct or we have incredibly different gaming interests
JaxonH is the kind of person who's continually optimistic and always finds something to get excited for, I've rarely if ever seen him criticize anything Nintendo's done.
Again, they do focus on the near future, but they always have something a little further out to announce. Confirming 0 titles past July is not their usual MO.
I don't think the Direct itself suggests anything about hardware in 2024 given the purpose of February Directs was always about revealing the Spring/Summer lineup. With the exception of Splatoon 3 being announced in the February 2021 Direct for 2022, further away stuff was always an E3 and September thing.
Incorrect. February 2021 was the only time we had a game announced for the following year, but with the exception of the April 2017 Direct (which was sandwiched in between the Switch presentation and E3, both of which had tons of huge announcements), every Spring Direct in the Switch era announced a new game for the Fall.
March 2018- Teased Smash Ultimate
February 2019- Announced Link's Awakening, which later released in September
2020- Nothing, but there were no full Directs this year
2022- Announced Xenoblade Chronicles 3 which released in September
We at the very least have gotten something announced for September and E3 filled out more of the Fall schedule. Again, we don't have that. Aside from previously announced DLC, the schedule past July is one big blank. That is extremely unusual.
It's unclear if Monolith or Bandai Namco owns Baten Kaitos so I can't really count that, and if Prime 2 were ready for September, we'd probably have heard about that now as I pointed out with Nintendo's history for Directs so if that's even happening it probably won't be that soon. September looks like it might be a big fat nothing at this point.
2020 style shadow drops don't really make much sense outside of the pandemic. When you have the ability to do a Direct, that gets you more attention. They mainly only shadow drop stuff that isn't expected to sell that well. I suspect that if anything Nintendo will have a Summer Direct to announce some smaller titles and further DLC waves to fill out the rest of 2023 and in place of the September Direct, they'll announce the new console some time in the Fall.
Stealth reveal that ToTK is actually a farming game (Link riding a tractor) must be the most top level trolling that Nintendo has ever done. If they’d focused on that more heavily it could have been “1st Wind Waker trailer” level legendary.
@Bolt_Strike Some of September is still summer and regarding Prime 2, I figure that if Nintendo announced it in the Direct as a separate release from the shadow dropped Prime 1 then the release would be overshadowed by backlash over pricing. Kind of like what happened to Tropical Freeze.
As for announcement strategy, in 2018 where the first half of the year was very port/remaster heavy they got the ports out of the way first with a January Direct Mini and then did a March general Direct with a heavier focus on new stuff. If Pikmin 4 is the last new game of 2023, I could see them just announcing each unannounced 2023 game separately and have a Partner Showcase for June.
Love this post. We should all now recognise and remember for evermore, the fallout from a Nintendo Direct is never over until Jaxon's brother has had his say.
@JaxonH Presumably in Metroid Prime Remastered, if you flick the right joy-con then the morph ball jumps...?
You guys had me at blood and semen.
What better way to celebrate than firing something out of the pipe?
