Why does the Switch fan run more as the Switch ages?

One year later with the OLED Switch. When it was new, the fan almost barely runs, or I amost couldn't tell if it was running. If it ran, it as slow & minimal. It's so quiet. But in recent months, the fan runs more. It maybe started around the six month mark. I can hear the whoosh. It still sounds like the fan is in good condition. But why does the fan run more as the Switch ages? I play docked. And the Switch only comes out of the drawer when I'm going to play it. So, this isn't a case of being left out needlessly to accumulate dust. (Perhaps playing hundreds of hours on it, is a factor?)

It was the same deal my launch switch in 2017 - the same fan behavior changes over time.

@JaxonH These HD-2D remakes still seem to take a decent amount of time to develop (three years for Live-A-Live, for example), so it's not the best option for making all of these classic games available in a timely fashion.

Although some of the pixel remasters did go further than others in certain respects.

Really love what they did with the opera scene in FFVI, for example:

That's true, but I think that's due to team size allocated more than it is volume of work. If they had a team the same size as they did for FFVII Remake, it likely would have been a 9-12 month project.

Hmm... hard to say. None of my Switches have ever been loud with their fans so Idk. Could be dependent on the game being ran?

@WoomyNNYes my second Switch is only 2 months or so old and the fan is randomly revving for no real reason, I even tried the canned air trick and it's still doing it. I can't exchange it since the 30 days are up and my only hope is to send it to Nintendo for repair. Right now my only Switch is a Switch lite with drift, I tried to fix it but one of the screws inside was stripped sadly.

btw my old V2 Switch I gave to my brother is running perfectly, with 0 problems, and it's 2-ish years old.

@Ralizah My thought is that they are testing out the DQ III remake first and will then go to at least 4 and 5 given their popularity. But there are a lot of DQ projects on deck right now. Infinity Strash is still not out, I think there is another mobile game on the way, 12 is in development, 10 Offline is being worked on as they add in the campaigns and then thearhythm is on the way. and that doesn't include maintenance/patches for existing games like treasures and the mobile games (I think there is one for Dai out right now). So they have a lot on their plate and the rest of squeenix is working on other games too like the FF7 remakes/remaster (crisis core) and they just put out a bunch of smaller games. I say give it a year or two more.

@JaxonH I mean, it's both. HD-2D remakes do seem to be full remakes, which entails a lot of work.

I'm satisfied with the Pixel Remaster approach. These games will be very clean and sharp on the Switch's display. HD-2D is fine for certain games, but it's already at the point where it feels like SE is starting to oversaturate the market with games in this style.

Besides, I don't know that I want to pay $30 extra per game and wait years between entries just to have some modern visual effects that'll blur up the image and cause the game to run at a lower resolution on the tablet.

@Ryu_Niiyama Remakes of IV and V would be brilliant. III - V is arguably the best stretch of games in the series, but they're so inaccessible if you don't want to play on a phone.

It'll help that DQIII HD-2D seems to be multi-plat from the start. Fine by me. As with Fatal Frame, I want them to make every possible cent on these remasters/remakes so that we can keep getting them.

@Ralizah @JaxonH Obviously it's too early to tell, but I gotta say that XVI looks like one of the best entries in a while.

Love seeing the high fantasy setting/themes that the game is using. Much better than whatever XV was supposed to be imo.

I wouldn't want all of them in HD-2D, but at least FFVI.

Ralizah

@IceClimbers Nah.

I mean, it looks like it'll be a high-quality product, but whatever that grimdark medieval character action game they're developing is doesn't look like what I'd want from something called "Final Fantasy."

It's a shame, because FFVII Remake showed that you could have a big budget, AAA-style Final Fantasy game with a party system and a tone befitting the property.

@JaxonH IV and VI would be the best candidates for that treatment, IMO.

And don't get me wrong: I'd snap that up in a second. But in terms of just having all of the classic FF games on the platform, I do like this approach.

Thankfully, we know from the Steam/mobile versions that they'll be reasonably priced for what they are.

Although I do hope they do a cartridge compilation as well.

Anybody got any tips for packing a Nintendo Switch (with joy-cons) in the mail?

Ralizah

@Kermit1Pineapple Lots of padding. Make sure it's snug enough that you can't hear it rattling around when you shake the box. The more it moves around, the more likely it is to get scuffed up during transit.

Ralizah

@Kermit1Pineapple Might also be worth wrapping the joycons in their own little bubble wrap cocoon.

When I pack boxes for sending, I also use plenty of packing tape to ensure a high-quality seal.

Also, make sure there's layers of packing material on all sizes of the objects. If the box falls in the truck, you don't want the tablet to be what absorbs the force of the impact.

I just realized how absolutely packed next year is going to be for games. Even on the Switch alone we’re getting:

Fire Emblem Engage
TOTK
Pikmin 4
Silksong
MK8D DLC 4-6

Not to mention a bunch of other third-party/ indie stuff. And I’m sure at this point we know nearly nothing about the second half of the year. I am super excited to see what next year brings!

@StarPoint

  • Fire Emblem Engage
  • Zelda Tears of the Kingdom
  • Pikmin 4
  • Hollow Knight Silksong
  • Mario Kart 8 DLC 4-6
  • Kirby Return to Dreamland
  • Octopath Traveler II
  • Advance Wars 1+2 (probably)
  • Persona 4 Golden
  • Bayonetta Origins
  • Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: Final Bar Line
  • Atelier Ryza 3
  • Metal Slug Tactics
  • Tales of Symphonia Remastered
  • Fatal Frame 4 Remake
  • Trails To Azure
  • Trails From Reverie
  • Rain Code
  • Fae Farm

And the year hasn't even started yet. I keep saying it, we're in a golden era of gaming.

@Ralizah
I'm definitely happy the Pixel Remasters are coming, but in truth I often struggle to play older games without any kind of visual face lift or refining of the controls and mechanics to modernize it a bit. Dragon Quest III looks to be my ideal way of enjoying a SNES classic.

@JaxonH Oh my goodness I completely forgot about Kirby and Advance Wars! I agree; this is like the second or third golden age of gaming right now and likely in the couple of years to come. It just feels like so many major things are finally coming to fruition, along with some complete surprises that nobody was really expecting. It’s like everyone is making up for the relative quiet spell we had in 2020 and 2021.

@Kermit1 Very true, likely the most earth-shattering release out of everything next year

@StarPoint I can't wait for hopes to be crushed because Link's not in the post-credit scene, I liked to be wrong though.
