I agree that would be more compelling, but at least imo, unlikely.

Just as PS is selling PS4 games on PS5 full price as a "PS5 version", Nintendo will probably do the same. I'm sure we'll get BC, and the better hardware could ensure dynamic res stays locked and framerate doesn't dip. But I don't foresee them proactively doing more than that. I think Switch 2 versions of Switch games will be sold separately, and they'll have higher target resolutions and framerates.

Of course I could be wrong. We're all just speculating here. But that's what I think.

It's worth noting that the PS4 -> PS5 situation is a tad more complex than that. For a start pretty much all PS4 titles are backwards compatible and amongst those titles there are some that have been straight up patched on PS5 to unlock higher resolutions/refresh rates. This is the level of "cross-gen" compatibility I expect we'll see from Nintendo

But yes, there are also some titles which exist as PS5 only and there are other titles that exist on both PS4 and PS5. With titles that are on both there is a way to "upgrade" the game to the PS5 version. For some titles this is paid for other titles this isn't paid. And this is how Sony handles it, Sony aren't exactly the most pro-consumer company out there

It'll probably be a bit of both. But at a base level, I don't think two versions of the same game will be the norm or even necessary for these titles that straddle the generations. And I certainly don't see it being as brutal as the Wii U -> Switch transition was. Whatever it is, I kinda hope it's nowhere near as convoluted as how Sony has done it

I see crossgen as just games releasing on 2 generations of consoles close to each other if not on the same day. The types of crossgen you have are:

  • Twilight Princess style - 2 separate releases, no upgrade available, last gen version runs on the current gen console for free
  • BotW style - 2 separate releases, no upgrade available, last gen version doesn't run on the current gen console
  • Xbox Game Studios style - 1 release containing both the XB1 version and a free upgrade path to the Series X|S version, the console knows which version to download
  • Playstation Studios style - 2 separate releases, can upgrade to PS5 version for $10, PS4 version runs on the PS5 for free (HFW has a free upgrade path but that was a response to the gigantic backlash about the game originally having the Twilight Princess style release)
  • RE4 Remake style - 2 separate releases, upgrade path is free though if you want to play the PS4 version on PS5 to save having to use up SSD space you can

Prior to the PS5/Series X|S generation the BotW style crossgen release was most common but as a result of Microsoft's massive backwards compatibility efforts, the BotW and Twilight Princess style crossgen releases became more unacceptable so you saw a lot more games use some sort of upgrade path instead with the PS5/Series X|S generation.

Here's what I think the Switch Nintendo published lineup will look like in 2023:

  • January - Fire Emblem Engage
  • February - Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe
  • March - Bayonetta Origins
  • April - Detective Pikachu (DLC is most likely to be 2023's mainline Pokemon content so more spinoffs are likely)
  • May - Tears of the Kingdom
  • June - Advance Wars 1+2 Re-Boot Camp (20th anniversary of Advance Wars 2)
  • July - Pikmin 4 (Pikmin is a good fit for summer)
  • August - Eshop exclusive game
  • September - Metroid Prime remaster(s)
  • October - Golden Sun remake (Golden Sun flows straight into The Lost Age without needing a password)
  • November - New 2D or 3D Mario
  • December - Nothing

That isn't including DLC/updates, naturally there's lots of that present too like I'd guess MK8 Deluxe DLC release months would be:

  • Wave 4 - April
  • Wave 5 - August
  • Wave 6 - December

Obviously that's gonna happen any time you go from a way more powerful system to a less powerful one.

Thankfully I never play my PS5 or XSX or my PC, so it's not an issue I ever deal with. Just Switch OLED and Steamdeck, both have 720p resolutions.

But even on the rare occasion I do, it doesn't take long to adjust. I played on 3DS and PS4 for years, going back and forth. And the gap in graphics between PS4 and 3DS is WAAAAAY bigger than Switch and PS5. People who played PS4 and Vita with cross buy and cross save, ppl who played literally any 7th gen console or earlier alongside a modern power console... lots of ppl play across different platforms with power gaps.

I mean, it is what it is. Nothing you can do about it but accept not all games are gonna look the same, deal with it and move on.

@EaglyTheKawaiiShika No, I have trouble going from native 4K 60fps on PC to whatever 4k-ish 60fps or 30fps game the PS5 is running.

But I dont have that issue with going down to Switch. Probably because I was never promised a certain profile thats not always hit.

It's why I tend to stick to Switch games that are high quality ports. Like Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII (looks better than FFVII Remake on Deck), Persona 5 Royal (can't tell apart from other versions), Nier Automata (hard to tell apart from other versions), Portal Collection (looks just as good as SteamDeck), Mario Rabbids Sparks of Hope, Monster Hunter Rise, Triangle Strategy, Switch Sports, 13 Sentinels, Splatoon 3, etc.

There's a lot of games that don't really feel "lesser than". The games that do, like No Man's Sky or The Witcher 3... I tend to avoid those now that Deck exists. I like to keep my Switch experience limited to the games that don't feel like it's a major downgrade. Obviously if you compare side by side you can always pick out differences but by and large, there's games that don't feel like major downgrades, and games that do. Stick to the ones that don't, and gaming on Switch becomes a lot more enjoyable imo.

@JaxonH
I'm pretty opposite in term of getting 3rd party multi console games.
When I found the PS4 / PS5 version have better performance than Switch version, I will get the PS4 / PS5 version and not considering the Switch version since I bought the games only once unless the games are really really good and have same performance on every consoles.
For example, I pick Team Sonic Racing PS4 version for 60 fps than Switch version with 30 fps. FPS difference is really big deal for me. If I can get 60 fps performance from the same games on different consoles, I will pick the version which can deliver better performance. I don't want to spend money on obvious downgraded products anymore after I keep sugar coating the minor flaws from Switch games for a long time, I think I will not sugar coating the obvious downgrade anymore.
Since I like to collect a lot if different video games so my Switch games got covered by 1st party +3rd party exclusives + 1st / 3rd party remastered from other Nintendo machines while my PS4 & PS5 games get covered by 3rd party multi console games. Win win solution so my Switch games library will not get overloaded by too many 3rd party games and my PS4 & PS5 games library can grow bigger from 3rd party multi console games.

@Grumblevolcano yes finally someone understand the concept of cross-gen games i was trying to explain and i believe Nintendo will do with the Switch and it sucessor by using Metroid Prime 4 as a cross-gen game.

Ahh, really? That's your take? My disagreement with you was that I don't think cross-gen games in the style of TP or BotW make much sense. Because that style of cross-gen game is unnecessary, bad for business and something the industry is moving away from

Then @Grumblevolcano comes out and outlines in more detail than I could muster how the TP/BotW style of "cross-gen" game is dead/dying and by extension the idea of "console generations" is being watered down. Microsoft has basically killed it entirely on XBox, Sony is kinda letting it limp on a bit. And this is with the XBOne/PS4 -> XBox Series/PS5 transition bringing with it a massive shift in storage architecture, which is more of a jump than the Switch is going to need to do to get to its successor

So yeah, I think it's far more likely than not we don't see separate Switch and "Switch 2" boxes for Metroid Prime 4 or TotK. More likely we'll see a Switch box with full Switch compatibility. We will probably see the game run at a higher resolution/framerate and probably VRR when played on "Switch 2". Although less likely we might get an update on Switch 2 for the title that brings higher resolution assets. And sure, it's possible they charge for that upgrade but I think that creates more confusion than it raises money

I expect post "Switch 2" if you browse the eShop you'll just see one game, if you buy it in the shops you'll get one box. You want the average consumer to be able to walk into the shops and not care about that stuff. The more the library between Switch and "Switch 2" is the same on the shelf? The better it is for both platforms. I firmly believe in all but the top of the AAA blockbuster titles it'll just be one library, one platform. Switch

@Giancarlothomaz I was thinking September because I think Metroid will be the closer in the next Direct (remasters and a teaser for 4) and the October - December lineup is usually revealed in June. Sure Prime 4 would make a bigger splash at E3 but the way Microsoft and Sony are acting I wouldn't be surprised if E3 was cancelled this year.

@EaglyTheKawaiiShika I don't think Nintendo would do that, Nintendo has no backup if the Switch's successor fails (we'd probably see Nintendo branch out into the PC space in that outcome) so they'll likely be very cautious about how they handle the Switch's successor.

Looks like we're getting another Mario+Sonic game in the near future....whoopee.

I'm gonna be completely honest with you: these games used to be so much fun (especially Winter 2010 and London 2012), but ever since they moved to HD consoles, they've just had so much life sucked out of them and basically turned from Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games....into the Olympic Games + Mario and Sonic. So yeah: not particularly looking forward to this unless it reverts back to the style of old honestly.

Am I the only one who has trouble re adjusting to the switches graphics after playing on the pS5 for too long?

Depends on the game. If it's a game that has no right running on the Switch then sure. But most of the time I can just adjust to a game on Switch in the same way I might adjust to playing something a bit deeper in my backlog on PC. Like spinning up Bioshock, Portal or LA Nior

Eg I'm swapping between Bayonetta 3 on Switch and Horizon Zero Dawn on PC ATM. And sure, Horizon is a lot prettier. But once you get past the slight blur from the lower resolution and lower texture resolution Bayonetta 3 might aswell be on PC

Obviously Bayonetta 3 is the gold standard, some games don't fare quite as well

Freaking. SCORE.

Are any of you familiar with the infamous Fire Emblem Shadow Dragon crystal display that was given out as a contest prize in New York City? Apparently less than a dozen of them exist. In my 5 years looking for one, I have never even so much as seen a single eBay listing to date. Nothing.

Until a month ago.

A person posted a picture of one on reddit in the FE community, and said their boss at Gamestop found it in a box and gave it to them. I couldn't believe it. Everyone immediately told them how rare it was. I dropped a comment I'd been searching for one for 5 years and had never even seen a listing on eBay

Well, a month goes by, and they reach out to me having read my comment. They spoke with an auction house that valued it at $2,000 - $5,000, and asked if I was interested.

I told them absolutely, but I'm not sure I'd be willing to spend that much on it. Said I could do $1,000 but anything more feels like the money could be better spent elsewhere. Long story short, they offered for $1,500 and I decided why the heck not. I've been looking for 5 years and never seen one, and will likely never see another in my lifetime.

Fortunately they live in the Midwest also, and during my next company trip to Indiana, I'm going to meet them at a police station in a town that's kind of between my route and where they live.

I can't believe I'm actually landing one of these! It's been my holy grail of collecting all these years. That one "unobtainable" thing you dream about as the motherlode of collecting.

In the picture it doesn't appear to be in good condition but they noted after they cleaned it, there were no scratches or anything on the glass. It was all just dirt.

I really hope Mario & Sonic 2024 will feature Mii as playable characters since the 2020 version was lack of Mii characters.
I'm waiting also the PS4 / PS5 version of Summer Olympic 2024 by SEGA.
Cross my finger Boxing will be featured again.

@SlashFuture
They never even sold it.

It's hard to find information on it they're so rare, but here's one article I did find.

From my understanding, one of these was handed out at select GameStop locations in North America as part of a promotional contest for Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon back in 2009. One was also awarded to the winner of a Fire Emblem trivia contest at the Nintendo World store.
