@JaxonH Gaming has not done Smell-O-Vision yet, that could be the new gimmick of this generation.

Imagine a black box you plug in to your console and it sprays perfume based on the smell that's needed in the moment like pizza or blueberries.

I wonder which smell would be produced while playing Splatoon.
Fish and ink?

Lovely!

This was actually being tested for VR, along with sensations of hot and cold.

Cool party trick, but nothing of value to the gaming experience imo.

So, in October, Switch is getting ports of two PS4 games with famously amazing soundtracks, AND an exclusive that a bunch of frankly stellar composers are working on. Be sure to enjoy these games with headphones or proper sound systems.

At least 3D lives on in VR where it's 100x more effective, since you're like...there, instead of looking through a window if Current TV's were in fact 3D. A great white shark in VR(Think PS VR2) coming straight towards you will be one zillion times more frightening than seeing that happen on a 65" 3D TV. But still, i want QD-OLED to adopt a new 3D technology that uses similar tech that the 3DS does without the need for glasses while giving you an ultra wide sweet spot with zero comprises being made to the picture quality. But alas, wont be happening for a while. Because people are crazy.

Hurrr, bring on that 8K resolution so we can see every single stupid little pore on some actors face, HDR(which has zero quality standards) and lets ruin that cinematic motion with the sope opera effect which makes it feel like you're there on set watching actors do things in front of the camera. lol Not only that, but all of these weirdo's keep obsessing over more TV brightness/nits. OLED's can already get bright enough for SDR to the point where it will make your eye balls sizzle. This is the mind set that a lot of younger millenials and Gen Z's have adopted.

I 100% agree with you! I'm so glad I'm nothing like my generation (I watched VHS tapes before they were hip! In the early 2000's)

So Star Ocean The Divine Force got an October release date, so this is the updated Square Enix list for 2nd half of 2022:

  • Live a Live - July 22nd
  • Front Mission 1st remake - Summer 2022
  • Nier Automata (Switch version) - October 6th
  • Forspoken (not Switch) - October 11th
  • Star Ocean The Divine Force (not Switch) - October 27th
  • Harvestella - November 4th
  • Dragon Quest Treasures - December 9th
  • Crisis Core - Winter 2022
  • The DioField Chronicle - 2022
  • Valkyrie Elysium (not Switch) - 2022

Square Enix's decisions recently makes me think The DioField Chronicle will release very close to Sparks of Hope. According to this article there's more info on the game coming on Saturday:

Yeah, it's hard to say how much the Nintendo fan base "hated" the 3D effect. It is true that the 2DS & New 2DS cut it, but one was the budget kiddie model (with the 3D was advertised for "seven & up" due to potential safety reasons), and the other was an end of life budget model. On the other side of the coin you had the New 3DS which actually improved the effect (this was the "pro" model designed to appeal to their core base).

It's true that some of the later releases cut the 3D effect as well, but I'm not sure if that's because the player base didn't want it, or if it was a case of the games largely being developed with the New 3DS' in mind, and that they might not run on og models with 3D enabled (and thus completely cut the feature to retain some parity in terms of experience).

Obviously the Switch doesn't have the feature, but I'd imagine they'd have wanted some sort of parity between the handheld & docked experiences, and with 3D TVs flopping (due to lack of interest from the general audience) it's a feature they couldn't count on being available in both modes (they still experimented in a manner of speaking with LABO VR).

Then again I'm a big 3D apologist who'se kinda on a 3D high with all the trips to the cinema I've taken this summer (I've seen Multiverse of Madness, Jurassic World Dominion, & Lightyear in 3D, and will hopefully be able to see Thor: Love & Thunder in 3D as well).

The New 3DS is the one I use. I had all the versions- OG, OG XL, New XL, New... and New is the best imo. Larger screen than OG, but still small enough for games to look good. Much smaller than XL and easier to carry around. Just gotta be sure to use tempered glass on the top screen to avoid scratches from the raised bezel of the bottom screen.

It was released in the US. I got a spare in a Black Friday sale for $99.

edit
BTW the New 3DS eye tracking worked wonderfully for me. It literally solved the issue with the 3D flickering

Combat in Live A Live is different for each of the 8 time era routes.

Feudal Japan is turn based with an action time battle bar. Whereas the China path is more real time combat, from what I've heard at least. It changes for each path.

@NeonPizza @JaxonH I had to turn the eye-tracking on my New 3DS off as well, because glasses play havoc with it. This sounds stupid, but years back, when I got a new pair of glasses, I even had them apply an anti-glare coating to see if that'd help, and it really didn't.

Stereoscopic 3D is still a wonderfully-implemented gimmick, but I can only use it like I was back in 2011.

To anyone who hasn't played the Portal games...

You simply must do so. Never in my life have I met a single person who played the games who doesn't think they're amazing. Most cite them as some of the greatest video games ever made. And they're games anyone can enjoy. If you like Zelda or Metroid puzzles, you'll adore them.

And the humor and story... absolutely top notch

Is this Portal 2 that was from PS3 long time ago?

@Anti-Matter
The very same.

Portal was originally created by Valve as a Steam store exclusive, back when they used to make games. It was then ported to console (PS3/360) alongside Half Life and Half Life 2 in a collection known as, "The Orange Box".

The Orange Box was primarily marketed with the Half Life games, while Portal was more or less included as a "freebie" bonus. But it was so good, gamers liked it more than Half Life! It became so popular, they eventually made a sequel, Portal 2, and that was ported separately to the 7th gen consoles.

To date, they were the only console release of the Portal games. They ran at 30fps, 720p max resolution, and had no gyro aiming (though the PS3 version did support the PS Move controller and offered exclusive levels).

Then Valve stopped making software, and for the last 10 years, fans have been begging for Portal 3 and Half Life 3 more than Nintendo fans begged for Metroid Prime 4. But... Valve just stopped releasing games.

Until Half Life Alyx which was built ground up for VR, exclusive to the Valve Index. But still no Portal sequel. The games were never released on PS4 or Xbox One, PS5 or Xbox Series. Valve simply stopped making games, and stopped porting their games to consoles.

Until now.

This is the first time Valve has brought one of their 1st party releases to console in a decade. And it's a phenomenal port.

To be super blunt, this is a very bad take. HDR is a pretty significant shift and a hugely positive one. Also HDR isn't really about peak brightness, although it is a factor, it's more about the contrast ratio across multiple colours. The dynamic range if you will, it is higher, hence the name

In terms of higher resolutions like 8K? Well sure, resolution isn't really the main game in town anymore. The main game is right now is dynamic range which you also dismissed. However particularly for games 4K isn't really the end of the road because aliasing is a thing. Do we need 8K screens? Not really. But there is certainly a visual advantage to rendering at resolutions above 4K and scaling down. Given more pixels in a screen is a relatively easy and cheap direction to go? I don't see why we wouldn't go down that road

And as a side note, the more pixels you have the more resolutions you can support without having weird scaling. On a 720p screen 360p scales nicely, 480p doesn't. At 1080p you get 540p but not 480p or 720p. 1440p gives you 720p, 480p and 360p but not 1080p. 4K gives you even scaling at 1080p, 720p, 540p & 480p. 8K gives you native scaling at 4K, 1440p, 1080p, 720p, 540p, 480p.....

The soap-opera effect? Honestly this is not really something worth even giving the time to respond to. Yes of course some TVs have post-processing effects that are complete garbage. This is nothing new. But ultimately the movement in this area over the last few years has been to BETTER post-processing. In terms of game modes, where this really matters, more modern TVs have super low response times due to super fast and/or light processing. We also have TVs now that have 120Hz panels and better with variable refresh rates. None of these are bad developments and if you think they're just gimmicks I'd argue you're the one who's got the faulty mindset
