@HotGoomba Playstation TV's are more expensive and most of the time don't have a controller which adds to the high costs.

I'm starting to question why I want one. I did this before I bought my Switch. I need to chill, all I'm doing is making my anxiety go up.

@Kermit1
Okay, before you decide which machine you want to purchase, write down the games list from PS VITA and PS4 that you want to play.
Compare their games library, count the games quantity that you can get, analyze their genre diversity and some reviews from the games you want to play. And think carefully since looking PS VITA on this year is way harder than PS4 that still easier to get the games and the machine on this year.
Also, I think it's nearly impossible to find PS VITA HORI cartridge case to store your PS VITA games on this year as 3DS and PS VITA HORI cartridge case has been discontinued.

@Kermit1 I mean, if you just want one coz you think they're cool, then go for it. The PS Vita was way ahead of its time as a handheld, and is, frankly, the most premium-feeling handheld I've ever owned.

But the cartridges are mondo expensive, so if you get one, you'll probably need to download games off the store. And keep in mind that Sony doesn't seem to maintain that storefront anymore, so you'll probably have a tough time parsing the PSN portal for solid games.

If you get one, I can recommend several, though.

Also, if you hack it, it's a terrific emulation machine for older systems (PS1 and down).

If you just want an entry point into the Playstation ecosystem, though, PS4 is going to be much cheaper and more accessible.

Yeah, the OLED model is still super tempting but I'm definitely holding out for a more substantial upgrade. Because as huge as the OLED screen is, and it is huge, it's hard to justify buying an entirely new console for. Especially when I already have a perfectly functional Switch that I mostly play on the TV these days anyways. There are just better ways I could spend $540AU on AV gear/tech

All I can say is, I hope their next hardware release also has an OLED panel. Or at least a SKU with an OLED panel. Because I'd definitely be picking up the new hardware with the non-OLED panel at launch if it's not an option and if they release an OLED SKU a year after I'll be in the same spot I am now again!

It'd be the dumbest thing in the world not to include OLED panels in a revised premium Switch model.

Metroid Prime is my favorite game of all time, but this would be an absolutely terrible idea. There's a tiny handful of launch games that will sell a new Nintendo system to the degree necessary to kickstart an entire console, this is obviously not one of them.

Not sure I agree. It doesn’t have to be a mega selling game. It just needs to be critically acclaimed and pitched at the crowd likely to become early adopters. Ideally a “big splash” launch title acts as a tech demo.

In this sense Prime 4 is perfect - it could sell several million as a launch title which is probably its limit anyway and it wouldn’t be reliant on accumulating a large active user base asap (very difficult on a brand new console) like online multiplayer games need.

@Ralizah @Eel I did a ton of thinking and I'm not going to get a PS Vita or PS4. I did the math and for me personally it's too pricey for me right now and most of my stores that carry PS4's now only have PS5's (not a bad thing), I think I might wait to join the Playstation ecosystem when the PS5 disk version becomes ""cheap"". Instead of a new Sony console for me I'm going to get a Sony Boombox, specifically the Sony CFDS70BLK Boomboxes. I can afford it for one and I have a huge CD and cassette collection so no need to make other purchases. I found a middle ground it's a Sony thing lol.

I dare you to count all the I's

Sounds like a plan, @Kermit1 .... Assuming there is a "PS5 pro" next year, the current ones should drop a bit in price & become more easily available, along with more options for pre-owned & better bundles, etc

The Switch OLED doesn't have to be a super expensive upgrade. If you have a v1 you can sell it on eBay for $200 USD (I just checked sold listings, they range from $190 - $240). Which after fees is still $175 minimum.

Which makes the Switch OLED half price, $175, to upgrade to.

Having said that, if a new model is coming soon, it does make sense to just grab that. Which is why I mentioned it. But I'll say this- if a new model is coming, it's coming with Zelda. And if a new model is coming with Zelda, it's going to be announced by January at the latest (assuming Zelda doesn't get delayed to Holiday 2023).

This is why I got the OLED day one. Otherwise it ends up being a perpetual loop of waiting to see. If the next revision also has an OLED screen, I'll sell my OLED to recoup some cost.

If it doesn't have an OLED screen, even if it's a bit more powerful, I'll be keeping my OLED for all the games that already look and run top notch, where the benefits of OLED outweigh the benefits of a slight frametate or resolution bump.

@Kermit1
Vita was cool 10 yrs ago, but it's kinda like Wii U now. Nearly all it's notable games have been ported. Final Fantasy X/X-2, Persona 4 Golden, Dragon Quest Builders, Assassin's Creed III Liberation, Resident Evil Revelations 2, Borderlands 2, Rayman Legends and World of Final Fantasy were the biggest games Iiked on the Vita. All of them (and sequels) are now better played on Switch, many fixing detrimental performance issues the Vita versions suffered. It still has Uncharted Golden Abyss, Trails of Cold Steel 1 and 2 and Persona 4 Dancing. Which I'm not sure is worth buying an old Vita for. It also had serial issues with its overpriced memory cards corrupting. Mine has corrupted 3 times now. I've just given up on it.

I wouldn't mind the price so much if they actually functioned properly without breaking.

I've spent today catching up on this thread cos I've been busier than usual these past couple of weeks and had fallen about 15 pages behind, pretty unheard of, having been in this thread since Day 1. I had all these juicy points to make and now I'm finally here my mind's just deflated on me.

I think my main wondering was, when Nintendo launch a Switch successor, how weird/difficult will it be for you OLED junkies if it doesn't have an OLED screen and equal battery life, and if it does have an OLED screen and similar battery life, how will Nintendo differentiate the v2 of the Switch successor? 4K screen? Furry joy-cons?

Anyway, it's good to be back amongst the thread. Nintendo and Switch are ****ing killing me. Every time I think I've just about managed to catch up with all the games and hardware I'd passed on at Day 1, a ****-tonne more games and hardware are already dropping in every direction. I can't see this generation ever being surpassed, Nintendo are just battering us into complete financial submission - I may as well just add Nintendo's name to my bank account and give them joint control.

When the Animal Crossing hardware edition game out, I was taken as anyone by the aesthetic, but I resisted as I'd already got a v2. I rectified that omission a couple of months ago and got one in Like New condition but £100 cheaper, and it is indeed as beautiful as it looked in the ads, if not more so.

Then there was the Monster Hunter Rise edition. I actually ordered one of those from Amazon, along with the Pro Controller, having them delivered to a collection point, but because I'd only recently bought the Mario anniversary red edition, I just couldn't justify the £320 or so it was going to cost me (including the digital code for the game, which I didn't want as I'm physical-physical-physical), so I left the console at the collection point and it was returned to Amazon for a refund. I rectified this omission last week, getting one in Like New condition for £130 cheaper.

Then there's the white OLED edition, which I really want just for the white joy-cons as much as anything, and I've been eyeing auctions for them just recently, and Nintendo go and drop the Splatoon 3 edition announcement, so even if I bought the white OLED now, I'd still be feeling like my thirst for all the Switch editions I could possibly want would be unquenched. Mother-of-Mrs-Mangel, that Splatoon 3 edition is indecently desirable. Though, I do gotta ask, why are the back of the joy-cons a different colour to the front (like the Animal Crossing joy-cons), cos that kinda annoys me. And if they're going to make the back of the joy-cons the same colour as the dock, why can't the body of the tablet be that colour as well? It really would be nice to have a white tablet.

I prefer White dock because you can apply some sticker or custom picture on the dock to beautify the Switch looking.
White dock is universal model to be paired with any color of Joy Cons.

I love the dual color of the Splatoon 3 joycon. I think the pearl white backside really sets them off. They'd look good regardless but ya, I definitely dig it.

As for how I'd react if the Pro isn't OLED and has significantly worse battery life? I'd be pretty sore about it, tbh. I just got a Steamdeck and, it's not impossible to go back to LCD. I'm enjoying it well enough. But you definitely notice. I guess it would be a price worth paying, if it meant games with unlocked framerates could hit 60 and games with low res drops (Xenoblade 2, Wolfenstein 2) would look sharper. But it would still be a pretty severe sucker punch in the gut. And precisely why I said earlier, if that's the case I'll keep using my OLED for all the games that don't benefit from a slight power bump. And there are plenty of games which would fall in that category. It would be less convenient relying on 2 systems but, OLED could then be handheld only for games already at peak performance (Ori Blind Forest and Will of Wisps, Portal 1 and 2, Bayonetta 3 which seems to be 1080p 60fps from the trailer, etc).

I'm not expecting severely less battery though. LCD, maybe. But if they juice up the X1 like they did with Mariko, but this time put it all into performance, it should retain the same approximate battery life as v2. But I guess we'll find out.

I hear you on this amazing generation. This year in particular.

Pokemon Legends Arceus: the best Pokémon game I've ever played, bar none
Triangle Strategy: One of the finest srpgs I've ever played
Kirby Forgotten Land: I won't say it's a masterpiece of the genre like Super Mario Odyssey or 3D World, but it's one tier under. If those games are S-tier, Kirby is solid A-tier.
Mario Strikers: Definitely missing single player content but what's there is fun- good for pick up and play local multiplayer
Switch Sports: been wanting this for 5 yrs. It's Wii Sports in HD, with bowling and golf on the way. I'm happy
Fire Emblem Warriors Three Hopes: the best Warriors spinoff I've ever played
Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak: the best Monster Hunter to date and easily a top 5 fave of all time
Xenoblade Chronicles 3: will surely be in the running for my new fave JRPG
Mario Rabbids Sparks of Hope: if it's better than the last, it'll easily be one of the best games of the generation, another top notch strategy title
Splatoon 3: Splatoon 2 is my favorite competitive MP game of all time, and I expect this to be even better
Bayonetta 3: Considering Bayo 2 is my favorite action game of all time and this looks superior in every way, it'll likely end up in my top 10 faves of all time
Portal Companion Collection: two of THE absolute greatest video games ever made. Barring Metroid Prime, I can't think of a single game I've wanted more on Switch since day one
Persona 5 Royal: One of the best JRPGs ever made
Nier Automata: One of Platinum's best- now that it's on Switch I'll likely finish it, we'll see where it stacks up then
No Man's Sky: I never got into this game but it seems to be a quality Switch version- I'll give it another go
Harvestella: looks like the Rune Factory 5 we should have gotten- could potentially be the new standard for farming JRPGs
Pokemon Scarlet/Violet: a clear step up from Sword/Shield- I'm kinda bummed there's no throwing Pokeballs with gyro like in Arceus, but it still looks quite good
Live A Live: it's no Triangle Strategy, but I enjoyed what I played in the demo. More for the lineup
Diofield Chronicles: it looks interesting- Idk what to expect because it's so different, but here's to hoping
Dragon Quest Treasures: I'm a DQ spinoff nut (I still think DQ Builders 2 is better than DQXIS) and had a field day with the fan translated Terry's Wonderland on 3DS. I'm looking forward to this
Final Fantasy VII Crisis Core: Finally a bigger budget Final Fantasy remaster/remake for Switch- I've been wanting this for years
Advance Wars: Assuming it releases this year, it's yet another solid srpg. And I look forward to giving the series a genuine try now that it's modernized
Neon White: One of the funnest games I've played this year
AI Somnium Files Nirvana Initiative: another banger
Demon Slayer: much better than I anticipated
TMNT Shredder's Revenge: best side scrolling beat em up since Maximum Carnage
KOTOR and KOTOR II: Two of the best Star Wars games ever made
Zombie Army 4: absolutely excellent
Sonic Origins: finally Sonic 3 & Knuckles on Switch!!!

It's crazy how many great games are releasing on Switch this year. And not just how many, but how many absolute top tier GOATs are releasing.
