Bayonetta 2 didn't fare as well, but it was on Wii U which was a dismal platform as only diehard Nintendo fans who like Mario and Zelda, and casuals, owned the system. Switch port got overlooked too it seems.
We don't have sales figures but there is this from Wikipedia:
While sales have not been fully disclosed, by March 2018, Nintendo confirmed the Switch version had sold 400,000 copies during its first nine weeks, compared to the 300,000 copies the Wii U version sold during the same period
It may be around 1m if looking at lifetime sales across Wii U and Switch. Which to be fair, is pretty poor as you said.
Hopefully Bayonetta 3 does at least as well as Astral Chain. The games are incredible- Bayo 2 is my favorite action game of all time, and both Wii U and Switch versions sit at 91/92 on MC. The games are way too good to be doing as poor as they have.

@jump I'm not sure if any individual console version has crossed that threshold, but the original multiplatform release of Bayonetta did, in fact, sell over one million units.
RE: NieR and P5R, it's hard to say. On one hand, those games are both significantly more popular if you look at sales numbers: 5+ mil for P5 if you include Royal, and over 6+ mil for NieR. On the other hand, most people who want to play those games have already done so, I imagine, whereas Bayonetta 3 is a new game. The ports will still sell to Nintendo-only people and people who want portable versions of the games, but I do think that factor will even out the playing field somewhat.

Support Bayonetta 3. It needs it. If this game can't crack a mil, I'd wager it'll be the death of the entire series. Switch owners are sitting on a masterpiece franchise. Don't let it slip away

I think Sparks of Hope will be Bayonetta 3's biggest competition, kind of comparable to when Fire Emblem Warriors and Mario Odyssey released a week apart.
@Ralizah@JaxonH I'm aware, hence why I phrased it specifically as a single version.
The overall point was more that this is a game that needs all the help it can get so releasing it at a time with games going after the same audience seems silly to me.
So my bank account keeps playing boss music… I suppose this will be a financial massacre. I was hoping for a Bayo 3 October release. Great month for me.

We shall hold hands and be massacred together, friend.
It's a $300 month ($600 buying physical and digital copies of each). I just made a hefty deposit in my bank account because I've been draining it faster than I've been replenishing it. This year has been nuts.

@Ralizah In fairness Ninty only controls the release date to Bayonetta as the others are third party including Mario + Rabbids which is an Ubisoft release.
I only play kids games.
Don't even care with the bigger games like that.
I will never support them.
That's why I will be happy to see some upcoming kids games on Switch like this.
@JaxonH I started laughing because I finally had to cancel my Bayo3 preorder from 2018 because I am moving. Had 10 bucks off too. Ah well. With 1 getting a global print I hope 2 gets a reprint as I never picked either up on switch. (I have two copies of both on wiiu. I did my part). And I am still playing catch up on new releases. Great year for gaming and switch owners in particular.

On the one hand, grouping releases around a specific time frame can create more hype for that time frame, which if done properly can spike interest in a platform.
On the other hand, if too many games are grouped they can cannibalize each other. Most ppl don't have the money to buy 4 games in a single month (I mean, it's just $60/wk but some ppl are younger with lower paying jobs, some are in college with part time jobs, some are paying a mortgage and have to justify expenses to the ol' ball and chain, etc).
I'm pretty sure Persona 5 Royal will sell like crazy. And Mario Rabbids will be evergreen for years to come. The ones I'm more concerned about are Nier Automata, No Man's Sky and Bayonetta 3. With NMS, it's not like they have any other big games to bring, so if it flops it's not a huge loss. We already got the one game they had to offer. But if Nier Automata or Bayonetta 3 flop... not only would that damage our odds of future Platinum games on the system, it could spell the end of Bayonetta.
So I really hope ppl prioritize Bayonetta 3, and to a lesser extent Nier Automata, when choosing which games to buy first

@JaxonH I'd say Persona 5 Royal is in the risky territory too because if sales skew too much towards PS5 then it gives Atlus the impression that PS exclusive was the right idea after all and Persona 6 onwards ends up being permanent PS5 console exclusive. So in terms of risk (highest to lowest), I'd say it's:
Bayonetta 3 > Persona 5 Royal > Nier Automata > Harvestella > No Man's Sky > Sparks of Hope
You make a compelling argument. I agree with that.

Well, to be fair, even if it never returned to Nintendo consoles, the future of the Persona series is secure.
Bayonetta, being an exclusive, is much more up in the air. Especially since nobody else seems interested in throwing money at it to help fund development. And, to be frank, PlatinumGames is in kind of a pinch in general after the hilariously public failure of Babylon's Fall. They could use another hit.
So if you like both, I'd say there's still more reason to support Bayonetta.

Let's just hope we're living in the brighter timeline where both games perform well, ensuring that Atlus and PlatinumGames both have a bright future on future Nintendo hybrids.
Versus the one where, you know, Platinum goes under, Atlus is still milking P5 years into the future with PS5-exclusive fighting games and kart racers, and Nintendo has decided to replace the hybrid gimmick of the Switch with a home console that features support for Smell-O-Vision.
