@Dogorilla Well the poster I'm thinking of who said that they believed it would get delayed was due to it looking too boring, not that the world is on the verge of WW3 and it would be in bad taste.
World events shouldn't delay a cartoon game. Half the games out there involve warfare of some type. You're gonna put the whole world on hold because one country invaded another? If world peace is the criteria I'm surprised we ever get games released.
Like, I get being sensitive to events, but come on. This war could drag on for months, even into next year. Who knows. You're just gonna start delaying any game with soldiers in it now?
There's being sensitive, and then there's being overly sensitive. This is ridiculous imo.

As a gamer, I think Nintendo's choice to delay the release of Advance Wars is silly. It's a video game, you'd think people would recognize that fact and be less sensitive. But as I like to say, "people will be people", and the word "war" in anything related to entertainment during an actual ongoing conflict qualifies as a faux pas.
I wouldn't be surprised if God of War Ragnarok slipped into 2023 if Russia doesn't cease their invasion.
@JaxonH people are dying in this war, Nintendo is showing respect by delaying Advance Wars Reboot Camp, be a cartoon game or not, war is a serious issue.
@Giancarlothomaz
I'm well aware of that fact. There's people also dying of starvation, people being sold as sex slaves, etc. The World is full of horrors.
But I'm not sure what that has to do with it.
You can show respect in a hundred other ways- genuine ways (like make a statement of support, donate, etc). Indefinitely delaying a cartoon toy soldier game just because one war between two countries exists somewhere on the planet is downright silly. It's silly.
So I guess we just won't get any games referencing any kind of war or armies as long as a single war exists somewhere. Might as well cross off Fire Emblem Warriors, and the new Fire Emblem we're expecting? Well, let's push that back to be a Switch 2 launch title.
Meanwhile, we'll still see Call of Duty (if it wasnt already skipping this yr), Battlefield, etc etc.
I probably wasn't going to get Advance Wars at launch anyway but personally I'd feel a bit weird playing a game where you shoot people with tanks at the moment. Sure, you could make the argument that there's pretty much always a war going on somewhere and it's no more tasteless to release a game about it now than any other time, but this particular war is dominating the news at the moment and Nintendo would definitely get some complaints if Advance Wars came out at the height of it. It's not like there's a shortage of games to play anyway. Triangle Strategy only just came out, it's arguably better this way so more people have time to play that first.
Thank you Nintendo for giving us Donkey Kong Jr Math on Nintendo Music
@Dogorilla
Triangle Strategy is amazing. I'm loving it so much, I dare say it's the best SRPG I've ever played.
But because I'm loving it so much, and I'm 40% of the way through the game already, I was really starting to get excited for Advance Wars. This is a serious bummer, especially after having already delayed the game once before.
The insult to injury though is the complete absence of any release window now. It's not like they delayed it to September 12th or something. They just straight up took it off the schedule, with no ETA. And with the way Nintendo carefully plans their releases, and the fact the Ukraine war could last months (or well into next year even, who knows?) they might not slot it back in until Switch 2 is out. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if the game just gets canceled outright.

@JaxonH If they announced a new date now there's a significant chance the war could still be going by then, and they'd have to delay the game a third time. It may end up being a long time before it releases depending on what happens in the world but I highly doubt it will be cancelled entirely. It wouldn't be the first time Nintendo's sat on a game for years before eventually releasing it: the Brain Training game on 3DS didn't come out in Europe until over four years after the American release, and I don't think they even explained why.

You can be empathetic and still think it's an oversensitive knee-jerk reaction.
My empathy doesn't dictate I sacrifice cartoon grid based strategy games with toy soldiers on the alter of moral acceptance.
Perhaps if it was a realistic war game, and specifically depicted Ukraine as the aggressor or something that played into the hand of the invading country's propaganda, it would make sense to delay such a game.
But this game... it feels so far removed from reality.
True, Advance Wars is fairly removed from reality. Regardless, it's video games, and so the release of Advance Wars would probably be compared to CoD's "no Russian" by news media despite being polar opposites artistically. Nintendo need to protect the brand first and foremost. As far as corporate optics are concerned, Nintendo must delay a game that simulates war.
Switch Physical Collection - 1,555 games (as of March 31st, 2026)
Switch 2 Physical Collection - 4 games (as of December 8th, 2025)
I think the delay is understandable though it does make me think what'll happen for the rest of the known Nintendo 2022 lineup. Namely Three Hopes, Splatoon 3, Xenoblade 3 and Bayonetta 3.
@Grumblevolcano I highly doubt any of those games get affected by this.
My guess is Advance Wars gets sat on until Spring 2023, when there's a gap in the release schedule.
The original Advance Wars starts off with the Blue Moon army, which is very obviously based on Russia/USSR, invading another sovereign country... yeah releasing this game right now would very clearly be in poor taste.
@Grumblevolcano i think Fire Emblem Three Hopes and Bayonetta 3 will also be delayed to 2023(specially since this games feature realictic despiction of war). @IceClimbers you also need to remember the Fire Emblem franchise feature realictic despict of war.
@JaxonH try forgetting empathy or cancel culture or whatever and just think about it as capitalistic marketing. The war is happening on the borders of both Europe and Asia which is two of the biggest markets for this game, war is literally in the name so it's just a safe measure to make sure there's no negative cognition when thinking or talking about the game so it doesn't flop and have to wait another 15 years for a game.
@Giancarlothomaz Fire Emblem depicts war in a medieval fantasy setting.
Advance Wars depicts war in a modern setting, with the first game literally starting with the in game version of Russia invading another country all while the main character repeatedly makes comments about war being fun.
There's a pretty clear difference here. Again, there's zero reason to believe Three Hopes will be delayed.
Well, we lost one today with Advance Wars, but we gained one with Square Enix's Diolfield Chronicle, confirmed for Switch.
It could be good. After how insanely stellar Triangle Strategy turned out, I'm definitely going to keep an eye on this one. Kinda looks like Fire Emblem, but in a Square Enix style.
The SRPG train must roll on.
