So I kinda forgot I owned SPLATOON 2 until I did the transition over to my OLED. I’ve been doing some online battles and as someone who usually sucks at these sorts of games, I am having a lot of fun. Gyro feels really good and the balance between objective and just killing each other is probably the best I have seen. I just hope I unlock some new game modes and maps eventually?
I will say, I kinda wish there was a more extensive tutorial right there in the lobby, rather than fragmented all over the place. It didn’t take me too long to understand what I needed to do and got stuck into the level/gear grind, but I still don’t know when my next unlock is coming or whether I’ll be eventually able to unlock things I currently have limited options in (like hair styles or lower body stuff for example). It’d be nice if it told you like in other online games exactly what you can access as you level up, so you can set goals. I mean it may do somewhere else, but like I say, this game seems quite fragmented in terms of where information is sourced.
Oh and considering I am at the opening levels, it seems crazy how long it takes to level up. I am generally always first or second place, but still somehow only get dribbles of XP.

Biggest thing to keep in mind with Splatoon 2 is, it's a Nintendo game first and foremost, and as such, won't follow the typical blueprint you're used to with 3rd party games of the genre.
They really prioritize gameplay above all else. Ya, there's customization, but it's not a lot. I mean, it was enough to satisfy me, but it's not gonna be like a Halo game or anything like that. There are shops, and gear rotates in and out of the shops over time. Just keep an eye peeled for stuff you like.
Also, the amiibo unlock some cool stuff if you have access to them. Can't remember what, but I remember it was quality.
The 3 main modes are single player campaign (and the optional Octo expansion), Turf Wars and Salmon Run, which is a horde mode. Salmon run is only open 3-4 days a week, so as to ensure enough players are available for that mode when it is open. Turf Wars also get several "modes" such as Ranked and Teams- the serious players do Ranked, but it's too high stress for me. Those kids using gyro aiming will pack your butt in a box and ship you overseas. It's crazy how good they are.
Most players grind for the perfect gear set stacking skills. There is a diminishing effect of skills being stacked, but an increasing advantage as a skill gets stacked higher, so many opt for all one skill on their sets. Not sure if it's advantageous to take that approach or diversify, guess that's up to you.
But ya, just enjoy the ride. You'll get plenty of opportunity to buy gear with quality skills as you progress. And find the right gun you like. They're all so different. Splattershot has short range but wide spray, roller is really good, Sniper rifle can be dangerous when used properly... there's so much fun to be had.
The single player campaign acts well as a tutorial for the multiplayer
Ranked Battle is locked until you reach level 10, until then the only multiplayer mode available is Turf War
Stages (and modes in the case of Ranked Battle) alternate every 2 hours with each 2 hour slot having 2 specific maps in a specific game mode (e.g. Rainmaker on Starfish Mainstage and Kelp Dome followed by Tower Control on Wahoo World and Piranha Pit 2 hours later)
Level up gives you Super Sea Slugs when you speak to Judd (there's an exclamation mark in the plaza that shows you who to talk to) and level up also unlocks new weapons to purchase
The money you earn by playing matches is used to purchase weapons and clothing in the various shops in the plaza. Clothing present in the shops rotate after a certain amount of time (I don't know how long)
I’ve been focusing on using the gun type you start with, as I got an upgraded version that comes with seeker grenades and a special which rains paint down on a wide area, I feel like it’s sealed a few games for us.
Haven’t seen too many interesting perks on gear yet, but I like making builds, so I guess I’ll see what I get as I go.
Shame to hear though that Turf War is the only game mode, seems like it’d get really repetitive after a while.
I dunno how playing online works in regards to matchmaking but if we can play together and you don’t mind being sandbagged by me, any of you can feel free to add me and we can play some matches.
So I got to play Salmon Run today, it was open. I like the concept but I thought the execution was just awful. Everything moves so fast, no one works as a team, you’re given random crap bits of gear, the stupid ***** vents. If they let me use my own build, didn’t make me have to worry about ***** traps and just let me battle it out with enemies I would have enjoyed this way more.
It'll never happen, they said... Switch got to 100 million faster than any home console in history, and by a notable margin at that. Even counting handhelds, only the DS got their faster. Onwards to PS2 now, I suppose.
After having bought a Pro Controller with Xbox Elite swappable magnetic analogs, I started researching the Xbox Elite Series 2 controller, and as it turns out, there is a way to add gyro aiming, and get it working on Switch and PC all in one fell swoop.
The Brook SE adapter. So I ordered an Xbox Elite controller and Brook SE adapter to go with it. At first I'd written it off from an Amazon review citing lag, but after watching a few YT videos, there's no noticeable lag whatsoever. The gyro seemed instantaneous too, from what I could tell.
Because this newer revision draws from the controller's battery instead of having its own (which is good, since the last one was only 4 hrs), I read you need the Xbox rechargeable battery inside. If you have normal batteries it'll randomly disconnect for some reason. So it was either A) buy a Series X controller and rechargeable battery, totalling $90, or B) buy an Xbox Elite Series 2 controller on sale for $140 which already has a rechargeable battery in it. Figured for $50 more, why not.
Though I am tempted to buy a Series Core controller also, since I've heard the ergonomics have been redesigned, and I always hated how fat the controller was, making it hard to reach the bumper buttons.
Will report back once I've tried the Xbox Elite controller with gyro aiming on Switch.
Even once a successor is announced (I don't personally expect to see one next year) the inevitable budget priced Switch revision will keep sales trickling in for years to come.
I always thought that 100 million was achievable (even in the early days when it was a laughing matter) but I'm not sure I ever thought the PS2 could be overtaken. Obviously there's a long way to go yet but at this point I can see a realistic path to that point - it almost starts to look harder for Switch not to overtake PS2 at some point.
I just don't see Switch having a 3DS or Wii style "sales dropping off a cliff" moment. If anything it's more likely to be host to an unexpected "Pokemon" style second wind like the original GameBoy IMO.
I unlocked planking in Ring Fit. I am dead. My stomach hurts. I love how much this game hurts me.
I guess it is kinda like half cheating, but with all the frustration in Mario Kart 8, giving in and turning on the auto steering has made it almost fun to play on my own, but it is definitely better played with friends/family. Talking of that, I have stopped playing Mario Party Superstars on my own entirely, but been playing it with family over Christmas and it has been a lot of fun.
I ended up just going ahead and picking up Mutant Football League. And yeah, game is kind of a mess. It is basically Blood Bowl but with Madden’s controls/real time. Not inherently terrible but the execution feels like a big mess. In the first game I played, the team kept bribing the ref and using the power to rewind time, so I basically just could not make a single positive play or score a single point, as they just erased it each and every time. Maybe this would be funny against friends, but in a single player context this quickly turned from amusing to just infuriating. I played the game again, changed nothing apart from turning the powers/dirty tactics off and the enemy team threw eight or nine interceptions, I scored almost 80 points and held them to single figures. Clearly the powers/dirty tactics are a disguise for some truly atrocious enemy AI, so the balance is just completely busted as reviews have warned.
I picked up Dicey Dungeons basically for free because of the sale and my gold points. Playing Loop Hero made me wonder if maybe I liked rogue games after all, just not all the ones that are all about the twitchiness of one’s fingers. DD certainly seems more strategy focused than your typical rogue and seems to borrow a lot from LH, or maybe it’s the other way around, I dunno what came out first? But the difficulty ramps up sharply and there doesn’t seem to be the same compelling through-line of progression that LH hade and made it so addictive for me.
I am thinking of picking up Wrestling Empire, to recapture the fun of the old wrestling games I played when I was a kid/young teen, but I see it was recently 50% off and according to Deku Deals it goes on sale pretty regularly, so I dunno whether to wait. It is still a budget game at full price, but I dunno if I wanna spend 20 quid when possibly in a few weeks later it’ll be a tenner, but then knowing my luck it won’t go on sale for like another year.
Oh and the one thing I forgot, I am still grinding SPLATOON 2: I think this game could become super tedious super quickly, but I am just playing a couple of rounds of PVP and then jumping back out and that is mostly keeping it enjoyable. This is what makes it suitable for the Switch, to me. I am not usually a PVP guy, but I actually think the PVP mode is the best part of SPLATOON 2 (why does my iPad always autocorrect that to all caps? I can’t be bothered to change it). Like it still has some of the usual issues, but I feel like it’s probably one of the best balanced online PVP experiences I have had. No one weapon seems to stand so clearly above any other, you aren’t just automatically crippled if you play with strangers and the way they have balanced objective with fighting is just some of the best I have ever seen. I am so used in PVP games in being dropped in, no skill based matchmaking so you’re dropped in with a bunch of vets who can shoot around corners and are basically unkillable because they have all this OP gear they grinded for and you just have level one crap, you just get totally reamed and then either never want to play again or stick around long enough to become frustrated enough at other noobs joining your team, refusing to play the objective, so you lose despite playing your soul out. Maybe ranked will have that issue? But the casual playlist seems free of it.
@Pizzamorg ranked battles in Splatoon are strictly skill based match making. Only fight people in or around your rank. Win enough, you rank up, lose a lot, rank down.

@StuTwo
I don't think anyone expected PS2 levels- even the most optimistic didn't go that far.
I expect 2-3 more solid years, counting from March. If 2 years, even 20-20 gets them within 15 of the record. They could trickle their way there afterward, with 8-7 once Switch 2 releases and shortages abound. If 3 years, then it's in the bag. 20-20-15 all day.
Exciting times. I kinda want to see it happen just for all the folk who were mockingly laughing saying it was the worst console idea of all time.
@Pizzamorg
Splatoon is just fun to play. A lot of games rely on grinding to addict you. But for Splatoon, leveling up was always secondary for me. I just loved playing. I couldn't get enough- back when Splatoon 2 released I must have put in 200 hours, easily. And my brother love love loved Salmon Run. It's all he ever wanted to play. I still feel proud I got my brother into Splatoon 2. He wasn't really into Nintendo much at the time, but Zelda BotW, Mario Odyssey and Splatoon 2 changed that in 2017. Now he's become a pretty big Switch fan.
