@Slowdive No, I don’t go actively hunting rumours like you! But that would give me very strong incentive to get into those games, because if this does exist there’s zero doubt it’ll be releasing on Switch as well. Apart from that it looks like usual service down at Square Enix. Only two days to go until we see Dragon Quest’s 35 Anniversary plans though!

@VoidofLight You mentioned your thoughts on Dragon Quest XI; why do you think it is generic? Is it the world design, the story, the characters, or all of them?

@TheJGG The story is a basic JRPG story from what I remembered. Gotta collect the treasures of the elements to defeat a dark lord who's hellbent on destroying the world itself. The music itself is also pretty bad, but I played the ps4 release of the game, and I heard the switch release has better music. It just sort of felt generic overall compared to other JRPG's I've played. I guess it's good for those who want more in terms of classic rpg games, or grew up with these sorts of rpgs, but for me.. I'd rather just play games like Final Fantasy, Xenoblade, Nier, or other RPGs which do a bit more than the basics in terms of their story.

Edit: I do enjoy Dragon Quest Builders though, but that's just because of it being something entirely different, and not just a straight up rpg. It's more if you cross a RPG with a Voxel building game.

@Slowdive I can’t realistically expect much more in terms of games, when we have then next mainline game being shown. It’s been in development for a bit so it could come out within the next eighteen months if things go smooth. Maybe 7-9 collection then? I remember hearing a lot about how good IX was so maybe remastering it à la Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance can be cool.

@VoidofLight Yeah I can totally see your view. I bought the game on Switch so a lot of the issues you had simply didn’t exist for me. The music was just fine, if you paid me a thousand dollars to keep the setting on MIDI music I still wouldn’t do it. Orchestral is that good. I wrote a lengthy piece a year back stating how Dragon Quest XI’s music was very derivative of past titles, so while the overall package is alright I dock points for lack of originality.

I’d argue the story is old and new. It’s surprising how deep it can go at times but it has such an anime feel to it. Every area you go to is like another episode and throughout the first half of the game (which is already very long) you uncover the mysteries, like Mordegon’s name. I think the voice acting in English is one of the greatest works I’ve ever listened to in a video game, it feels so complete, no lines are mis-interpreted or mis-said.

Aside from the story and maybe the combat I wouldn’t say it’s generic though. But it’s by no means a game that takes risks so I’d label it as comfort food JRPG. But that doesn’t make it a bad game. Of course it didn’t help you got it on PlayStation!

Heh, although FFIX hardly needs it, @TheJGG .... If they wanted to, there's a mod for PC version that basically does that, so they might be able to pay the person to put that officially in the game on consoles!
I'll have the DQ IV-VI collection, VIII & IX, as I'd love to replay that, too, for my Switch, please, @Slowdive! I'm not interested in the mmo Japan only entry, so I'd love them to also announce XII coming (hopefully) next year

@TheJGG With the DQ 35th Anniversary presentation being the first time it's being subbed for international audiences, I'm hoping we're finally getting a western release for DQ X. But chances are it's for the worldwide simultaneous release for Dragon Quest Dai Adventures.

Switch Physical Collection - 1,536 games (as of December 14th, 2025)
Switch 2 Physical Collection - 4 games (as of December 8th, 2025)

Holy cow everyone, it seems the 27th of May will be a very busy day indeed as far as video games go. At 4am BST I’ll be watching the Dragon Quest 35th Anniversary livestream. And at 5PM there’s two events at the same time; Sonic’s 30th anniversary livestream, and the Horizon: Forbidden West stream.

What next, a Nintendo Direct?

@Magician That’s a very real possibility. But not long to go for answers!

@Ralizah cool! It does make me wonder if the demo would actually help convert people into buying it though as it’s niche appeal would have likely reach all of its potential niche audience already.

I would like the Golden Sun & Mother games ported, then they could do new ones for those....

Hmm... there’s no Codename STEAM or 1080 which would probably be my first two choices so I will take Star Fox and Advance Wars instead.

Kid Icarus and Golden Sun.

It's criminal that Uprising never got a follow-up.

At least 2'8".

@timleon you can probably blame Smash for that, Sakurai is never gonna work on something else at this rate.

Kid Icarus Uprising and thus the last non-Smash game Sakurai made came out more than 9 years ago.

Jokes aside, I would go with F Zero and Advance Wars. There are series I'd prefer returning than F Zero, but it should obviously get another chance. It's been forever, its a genre without a lot of competition, people want it, I inherently dislike any series in the original Smash Bros being ignored. I love Golden Sun, but I really doubt they're continuing the cliffhanger of the DS game or enough people care that much, and I also doubt they'd make another that truly lived up to the GBA games. I was surprised enough people cared that we even got the DS game back then.

And Advance Wars should come back instead of having only endless Fire Emblem games. It's a different series, with a different appeal, that deserves the same chance Fire Emblem Awakening had.
