I waited for 2 years until I replayed BotW, so I had forgotten just enough so that exploration was fun again and even finding the solutions of shrines and dungeons was interesting again. If I really enjoy a game, I usually wait at least 2 years until I replay it for this reason.

Yea, time definitely helps. No matter how good a game is, I usually can't launch right back into a 2nd playthrough unless it's a super short platformer or something.

Ya, it seems they've been improving with every release. Trails 3 looked good but had a lot of jaggies. Which, you can't avoid that entirely on Switch, but Trails 4 looks noticeably smoother.

I've been jumping back into killer queen black this weekend. I don't hear people talk about it much, but it's definitely one of the best multiplayer games on Switch.

I played some more Dragon Quest XI today and I really remember why this game was described as one the best RPGs of all time. It's just so good.

@JaxonH Honestly, even though Ys VIII looked actively bad at times, the image quality never really bothered me. Falcom games look like uprezzed GameCube releases anyway. It was the unstable framerate in parts that bugged me, and apparently that was initially true of Ys IX on PS4 as well.

As long as it holds 30fps without too many huge dips, I'll be happy enough.

Unfortunately for NIS, it's going to be years before I'll get to the last two ToCS games

@Ralizah
Ya. Their games are no graphical showpiece, but they're really, really good games so I don't mind.

After getting sucked into Trails of Cold Steel 3, and deciding to go back and play the first on Steam, I kind of fell off because, well... Steam isn't hybrid. Happens every time, without fail (except for Monster Hunter World, which was so good even lack of hybrid play couldn't stop it).

I've realized that, unless it's on Switch, I'm unlikely to finish it. So I'm probably just gonna pick Trails of Cold Steel 3 back up and go from there. If the first 2 ever come to Switch, great. I'll play them afterward and treat them like prequels filling in backstory.

I'm just really glad Trails of Cold Steel III and Trails of Cold Steel IV are on Switch. They're such great JRPGs, perfect for handheld hybrid play with its slower pace and turn based battles. Like Bravely Default 2, Dragon Quest XI S, Xenoblade Chronicles 1 and 2 and Final Fantasy X and XII, they are among the best JRPGs on the Switch.

I must be weird, I always think the Cold Steel games look great.... Playing IV on Steam now & it's amazing so far Also can't wait for Y's IX there, which also looks very good to me

@JaxonH Some of them are. Trails in the Sky FC was one of the more boring games I've played. I'm hoping the subsequent games are better. I've heard ToCS1 is a little slow itself, so we'll see. Thankfully, Ys VIII was so good that I still had a blast with it.

And yeah, I prefer not to be tethered to the TV when playing RPGs and/or games with a lot of grinding. You mentioned MH World, and I'm pretty sure that's the biggest reason I never bothered getting into that, despite quite liking MH4U on 3DS (and now Rise on Switch). Cold Steel 1 and 2 will be Vita experiences for me. Playing 3 and 4 on Switch feels like a natural progression in that regard.

I'm struggling with the Trails issue myself currently. Been wanting to play it in order for years. Bought Trails in the Sky FC on Steam years ago but haven't touched it. I really need games like those on a portable, so I'm looking into getting illegitimate copies running on my Vita. A collection releasing on Switch would come in real handy.

I've got PS3 physical copies of ToCS 1 & 2, but need to decide whether to get the Switch copies of 3 & 4 or remote play them via PS4.

You guys had me at blood and semen.

What better way to celebrate than firing something out of the pipe?

Nothing is true. Everything is permitted.

@Ralizah I'm playing Ys IX on a base PS4 and the performance is ok. It will be interesting to see how the Switch handles it though. Some of the areas are significantly larger than Ys VIII

Ralizah

@Wargoose It was apparently a mess when it first launched in Japan, but the Western release got all the patches on day one, so that doesn't surprise me at all.

But yeah, I'm... concerned about how it'll perform. We'll see.

Well, I started with those 2 on Vita, @Ralizah... The Sky trilogy was good to play before 3 came over, since that's when those characters appear Due to the huge story they're telling, most of the games do start slow but they certainly get going as they progress

@ophone
I also mostly play with the Pro Controller, but I really wanted a SNES style controller to play games (on both PC and Switch) that only require a d-pad. The sticks on the SF30 Pro were just a little extra to me. That's why it bothered me so much that the d-pad ended being terrible.

@rallydefault
I actually think the build quality feels quite decent, but in the end that was useless to me if (to me) the d-pad works horribly. I've always been a "first-party = better" type of guy though, so I can definitely relate.

@dionysos283
I obviously don't know how the other 8bitdo controllers stack up, but I kinda doubt the earlier models and the US model of the same version were somehow better with regards to the d-pad. I could obviously be wrong and think it's great that you're enjoying it (I wish I was as well ). There are so many threads on Reddit about the d-pad being wonky and some have even posted ways to fix it, as shown here: https://www.reddit.com/r/8bitdo/comments/aaydp6/fixed_the_dpa...
I can be quite a picky person btw, so maybe it's just those type of people who are bothered by it.. ^^'

@Ralizah
Good to hear it works nicely for you as well, you can see above why I'm not a fan myself.

In the end, I now own several Switch Online SNES controllers and I absolutely love those, so for me it's not really an issue any more, since I ended up getting what I wanted (and officially at that). It just always kinda irks me when I see someone recommending 8bitdo controllers [again] and I can't help think about the money I wasted on one of those.

Ralizah

@BruceCM I'm going to give SC a try, but if it's as slow as the first game was, I'll probably just skip straight to Cold Steel 1. Still mixed on whether I'll be bothering to import and patch the Crossbell games.

@Monkeido Well, either you received a dud or some of the controller models are more well-built than others. The M30 is super high-quality. It feels like a legit controller you might have gotten with an old Sega console. The D-Pad blows away anything Nintendo has ever made. And it has held up for more than a year of heavy use (hours per play session, multiple times per week with no issue). The only issue with it is that it's only really useful in games with a button remapping option, because the six-button layout doesn't really align properly with the diamond-shaped face button configuration Switch games are designed for. Just read that the button remapping capability added to the Switch recently should work for the M30, so I'm going to try that.

I'm not trying to delegitimize your experience or even tell you to trust the company again, but people are recommending their controllers, in general, because they have good experiences with them.

I doubt I'll be getting an SF30 Pro, but if I ever consider it, I'll keep your experience with it in mind.

@Ralizah
If there's one thing Vita's still good for, it's Trails of Cold Steel 1 and 2. Being low spec games I can actually play them on Win 2 and get 3.5 hrs battery life at 720p and cross play with Steam on the TV, which is what I was originally doing. Problem is, I don't carry 2 handhelds with me. Only Switch, because 99.9% of all games I'm playing are there. So despite having hybrid capability it never really did me any good.

The ones before Cold Steel are too old school and slow for my tastes. I'm sure once you're deep into the series and played all 4 Trails of Cold Steel games they may be appealing to go back to, but personally I'll just stick with Cold Steel.

And, even Cold Steel games are slower paced. It's why my brother said he stopped playing Trails of Cold Steel 3 after 10 hours. But having played far enough to get sucked in, I see it from a different perspective. Although the games do have a slower pace, once you're acclimated to it and far enough in that you start getting absorbed by the story and have a better understanding of the characters, it really is Game of Thrones: JRPG Edition. You just have to play long enough for it to get its tentacles around you.

Once it does though, it's got that perfect Persona style time management, with very, very interesting characters, dialog and story, with a fun combat system, though it took some time for me to come to grips with it. The first game is actually pretty difficult. I was struggling and lost to a boss, and had barely scraped by the two bosses prior. After BruceCM gave me some pointers though, I did much better.

I like that the 3rd game is a much more relaxing difficulty, and there are like 5 difficulty options in the 4th game. May also be in the 3rd- can't remember.

Yeah, I didn't get around to the 2 Crossbells either, @Ralizah .... Those characters do have quite a big role in Cold Steel 3 & 4 but I managed well enough! There's been various gameplay improvements along the way, too, so that does help!

I wrote this design doc for a potential Xenoblade Chronicles anime... enjoy! Any comments or feedback is appreciated.

Episode 1 - The Battle of Sword Valley story arc, and ends with the flashy title sequence. After half-time we’ll be introduced to Shulk, and it will end when Shulk enters the lab to find Reyn with the Monado.

Episode 2 - The party journey through Tephra Cave, and ends when the colony siren starts to sound.

Episode 3 - Repelling the Mechon invasion, ends when Shulk first attacks Metal Face.

Episode 4 - It starts to the voice clip, “The Monado… it’s not working!” and ends when Shulk and Reyn enter Tephra Cave again.

Episode 5 - The journey through Tephra cave, the first half ends when Shulk and Reyn see the Mechonis from the kneecap, and the second half ends when Shulk sees a vision of Sharla getting killed.

Episode 6 - Begins with Sharla explaining the tragedy of Colony 6, and the party go to Spiral Valley looking for Juju, and when they get near the episode ends.

Episode 7 - The party destroy the M71 but the halftime break begins when Xord shows his face. The second half ends when the party enters the Ether Mine.

Episode 8 - The party travel through the mine and defeat Xord before halftime. For pacing purposes he’s only fought once, at the pit of the mine. The party use the elevator, and Shulk one-shots Xord when he comes back, and the story resumes. The episode ends with the shot of Alvis and the Telethia.

Episode 9 - The party travel through Satorl Marsh, entirely at night. For pacing there’s no Coming of Age ceremony so they just climb up. Party travels through the Bionis’ Interior and emerge into Makna Forest. The episode ends when Melia is knocked unconscious by the Telethia.

Episode 10 - Begins when Melia is woken up by the party, and Shulk’s encounter with Alvis is shown through flashbacks. The party meet Riki, and the episode ends when they leave Frontier Village.

Episode 11 - Riki’s backstory is explained as the party search for the Telethia, and party defeat it before half-time. The party journey to Alcamoth and as the entire party minus Melia are taken captive, we’ll learn about Tyrea and Yumea.

Episode 12 - The party is almost killed by the Bionite Order but Alvis comes in after they finish, and they quickly journey to the High Entia Tomb, to catch up with Melia. The Kromar quest is omitted for pacing. They defeat Tyrea, and the episode ends when the Mechon begin invading Prison Island.

Episode 13 - Prison Island is explained as Sorean travels to activate the defences, and he also reflects on his discussion with Shulk. The party catch up to him, and the episode ends when Fiora is revealed to be alive.

Episode 14 - The party recover from the shock of Fiora being alive, and then they travel through Valak Mountain. The party fight Mumkhar, and the episode ends with Egil’s frankly bone-chilling line, “Find us, Monado, sword of the Bionis,” after he takes Fiora away.

Episode 15 - The party travel through Sword Valley, and before half-time Mumkhar is killed. The party then travels through Galahad Fortress, confront Face Nemesis and Egil, and the episode ends with Shulk leaping off the fortress.

Episode 16 - Told from three perspectives (Shulk and Fiora is one, Sharla and Reyn is another, and Melia, Dunban and Riki is the last), explaining their inner thoughts and how they truly feel now. The episode ends when they all reunite in the fallen village.

Episode 17 - It focuses on healing Fiora. We meet Miqol, who explains that Egil is his son. He doesn’t explain that Vanea is his daughter, this is for pacing. The team recover the Piezoelectric Unit and the episode ends when they enter Mechonis Field, with the really intriguing dialogue about the perpetuity of hate.

Episode 18 - The climb up Mechonis Field, with the weapon maintenance scene. The episode ends when Jade Face fires on the crew.

Episode 19 - Opens with a shot of Agniratha. Then we cut back to the present, where the party meet Vanea, who introduces herself as Egil’s sister. They journey through the factory and the half-time break happens when they reach Agniratha. The second half involves the fight with Jade Face, and they reach the Meyneth Shrine as the episode ends.

Episode 20 - Egil is revealed in person for the first time, and the party lose to him. Gadolt sacrifices himself and the half-time break happens. Dickson and Alvis join the party and they make one final push to the Mechonis Core, destroying the Apocrypha Generator. As the episode ends Dickson says the “it’s all finally coming into place,” line.

Episode 21 - The first half of the episode is the Yaldabaoth fight, and as Shulk prepares to offer Egil his hand he is shot, and then we have the half-time break. The rest of the episode is dedicated to Dickson explaining the truth, and ends when Meyneth is killed, and Zanza disappears. The final line is “this is the passage of fate!”

Episode 22 - The team escape, with Fiora carrying Shulk, and they’re attacked by Telethia aboard Junks. Dickson taunts them but Kallian comes in and sacrifices himself before half-time. Then Fiora and Melia get significant character growth as they confide in each other before the Telethia attack Colony 6.

Episode 23 - The space cutscene with Shulk and Alvis plays, and then cuts to the party struggling against the Telethia. Before the half-time break the Telethia abruptly dies, and it’s revealed to be Shulk, with the Replica Monado. The second half involves them dispatching Alvis’ Telethia, and ends when the group enter the Bionis’ Interior again.

Episode 24 - The team are taunted by Lorithia as they journey towards the Bionis’ Heart They fight her and as Kallian sacrifices himself we get a half-time break. Then the group travel through Prison Island and kill the Dragon King Alcar in an epic battle.

Episode 25 - Dickson is waiting for the group at the Prison Terrace, and the group almost lose hope, but gain the upper hand and kill him. After the break Zanza learns of Dickson and Lorithia’s passing, and then we cut back to the group facing the spirit enemies of the past bosses. As the group stare at the Earth, the episode ends.

Episode 26 - A 30 minute special to finish the series. Zanza offers Shulk the role of disciple, in a very lengthy standoff but the party fight him, and Zanza proclaims; “How? How can you still have visions?”. The second phase begins with another fight, plus Shulk’s speech on deciding the future. The break happens, and when we come back the final showdown happens, with Alvis’ speech on providence. Shulk cleaves Zanza in two, and Alvis explains the nature of the world. Shulk asks for a world with no gods and the screen cuts to black. When it comes back on the epilogue with “Beyond the Sky” plays. The end!
