The definitive March games list (you'll have to watch to see why- trust me, this is THE only list you need)

@JaxonH
I have posted Harvest Moon One World first gameplay above.
What do you think about that game so far ?

I like Switchforce, specifically the host.

I mean, I can't say they're my favorite channel or anything, but I do find his taste in games far better than 90% of other Nintendo YouTubers, who only ever want to talk about Zelda, Mario, etc, or old retro game consoles or [insert boring topic #37 here]. I also find him to have a genuine interest in games rather than shilling games for popularity's sake. After Hey Jay!'s boom in subs due to taking an interest in Monster Hunter, I've suddenly seen a few YT say they want to get into it too, but they really don't. They just want that sweet sub increase.

All that said, none of that is particularly relevant to the video shared. You don't have to be a fan of a channel to appreciate a good video here and there. I appreciate him making that video. It needed to be said. You won't hear it from the regulars, that's for sure.

OK. So.

I finally bought another pair of 3rd party joycon. Last pair I bought looked good, but the analog sticks didn't point true. They had magnetism around the X and Y axis, for any tilt within +/- 10° or so. It would snap to the axis unless the tilt was pretty significant.

But all the talk of better joycon with Gyro got me curious. I bought the Binbok joycon, 2nd revision with "fixed" dpad not as wide.

Thoughts
AMAZING! I'll never use any other joycon again! But that won't be true for everyone. Let me explain.

The joycon are nearly perfect in all the ways that matter. The analog sticks are much higher quality and have WAY more travel, yet without being any taller than official joycon. So they still are low profile but have range approaching that of the pro controller. Muah!

The ergonomics is immaculate. Not too big, not too small, cups the hands perfectly. For real. I've tried Hori Split pad. Too bulky by comparison. I've tried my other pair. Decent but not quite as good. These just nail it with the ergonomic shape.

The dpad is indeed fixed and no longer registers wrong directions. The downside to that is they simply made it only register register 4 cardinal directions like official joycon. So not good for jumping diagonally in Street Fighter. Ironically, I can pull moves off perfectly though. But I found the analog stick to work amazing for that game. It feels like a thumb arcade stick, and I was nailing roundhouse to uppercut to flame hadoken with Ryu like it was nothing. All in all, the dpad works no worse than official joycon so, I can live with that provided everything else is on point. Plus it feels way better in platformers.

The joycon even have RGB lighting around the analogs you can toggle to different colors or rainbow. 3 levels of rumble you can set how you like. Gyro works AMAZING, just like real joycon. Can't tell the difference.

OK. So are there any downsides? Unfortunately... yes. The 4 face buttons. For some reason they need to be pressed a little harder than usual to register. Not much. And with a conscious knowledge of that, I was playing fine. But it still annoyed me because I press lightly naturally and every once in a while it wouldn't register.

HUGE disappointment. They're so close!!! But wait... there's hope. I disassembled the right joycon. Didn't watch any tutorials, never done it before either. I just winged it. And it wasn't hard. I found the back of the buttons had 2 small rectangular cutouts, probably plastic savers to cut down on material costs. I think that caused it to push on the membrane unevenly.

So.

I took electrical tape and an exacto knife and cut out 4 square pieces large enough to cover the majority of the backside of the plastic buttons. I know they're round but it's hard to cut round pieces. Guess what. It worked perfectly. And I do mean perfectly. They're perfect now. Absolutely perfect. They work exactly how you'd expect.

Now. The buttons are clicky and kinda loud. All the buttons, not just the face buttons. But whatever. This thing is el-maximo comfort level. The buttons register fine. It has a dpad even if it is 4 directions only. It has amazing analog sticks. It has amazing Gyro. It has adequate rumble with 3 level settings. It has RGB lighting.

I'm so happy with these. I 100% recommend them, but only if you're ok with pressing a little harder than normal for face buttons, or, are OK taking 30 min or so to take back panel off, remove electrical board, and add electrical tape pieces to the backside of the 4 face buttons. If you do though... wow. All the benefits of a Hori Split pad Pro, with wireless, with Gyro, with RGB lighting, and better ergonomics.

@Wavey84
Because of the angled sides, my thumb actually doesn't go over the analog when resting on the A button. It does when reaching over for the other buttons but that never caused any issues for me.

Although I do get why it's not ideal, the controllers would have been way too fat to avoid that. And the first revision of these were. They looked more like Hori Split Pros. But it seems in the redesign they opted to go with a less bulky approach, which also had the advantage of now barely fitting into the Satisfye case. The previous revision, it was just so wide that no case would fit the Switch with them attached.

Personally I find the trade off between slimmer profile comfort and fitting in a case, and wider profile feeling too bulky and no way to transport, to be a good one

But that's just me.

@Anti-Matter
Never had much interest in Harvest Moon. The fact I've heard it's not as good as Story of Seasons maybe biases me a bit though.

I see Hot Wheels Unleashed announced for Switch. I get a bit excited; I had a few Hot Wheels as a kid, they were cool. Then I see the developer is Milestone and all my enthusiasm evaporates. I'm not a fan of their work. Nice all-CG trailer though.

I've been so into Mario 3D World that I haven't even started Persona 5 Strikers yet. And Gnosia comes out tomorrow, too...

Haven't even touched my copy of Xenoblade DE yet. I'd like to play Bravely 2 as well, but I've resigned myself to waiting for that one.

I have no idea how long it's going to take me to get to Monster Hunter at this rate.

It amazes me people can sit around on message boards and cry about a "drought."

Currently Playing: Yakuza Kiwami 2 (PC); Unicorn Overlord (NS)

RR529

Tonight I noticed my Switch's fan running while playing 3D World (and I'm probably 5-6 feet away from it, since I'm playing docked) which isn't something I've really noticed before.

I can't imagine a Wii U port of it's scale would be particularly hard on the system (I've only played the base game so far & haven't touched Bowser's Fury), so is it something I should worry over?

Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)

NintendoByNature

@RR529 my fan just randomly runs on certain games at certain points. Usually when I'm starting it up or when it's loading. I personally wouldn't be concerned but maybe someone else can shed light.

NintendoByNature

link3710

@RR529 @NintendoByNature Most games have taken advantage of the top performance level on the CPU (the "boost mode") to reduce loading times as much as possible while dropping power to the GPU so it doesn't kill battery life. That's why the fan tends to turn on during loading screens (including start up), since all the heat is concentrated on the CPU which triggers it to cool that down.

Also, keep in mind that 3D World on Wii U ran at 720p docked, while the Switch version runs at 1080p.

Bloomberg just dropped a bombshell article stating their sources confirm Nintendo has secured a contract with Samsung for rigid 720p OLED screens for their new revision launching later this year, which they hope to use to boost demand against heading into the 5th year of its life and against stiffening competition.

It claims the OLED screens are rigid (unlike more expensive flexible OLED, I’m assuming, though that won’t matter for a screen that is not meant to bend) and said excess supply led to a good price. They claim the screen is 720p but at 7 inches (which I just measured the bezel on my Switch- that’s almost the exact length of the diagonal of the bezel, meaning the Switch will likely be the same size, but they’re removing the bezel almost entirely to fit the larger screen).

They also claim it will be 4k capable for TV displays.

So ya. There you have it. Bloomberg says it’s happening. If they’ve confirmed Nintendo signed a deal for 720p OLED displays, then ya, it’s pretty much a done deal at this point.

I find it both interesting and exciting to see Nintendo taking a different approach. I can’t remember where I read this but someone was saying Nintendo in the past has always waited for hype to die off to milk everything they can, then they try to inject new demand with revisions or new consoles, and that hasn’t worked out well for them after repeated attempts, since it’s hard to regain momentum once you lose it. Wii to Wii U is a prime example of this. Even Miamoto said he regrets them not releasing a Wii HD sooner. Sothis time they want to take more of a Sony approach by injecting demand at the height of hype. This change in strategy is also evident by their pursuit of more cutting edge technology. A welcome change, I should add. It’s about time. Not to say you can’t have amazing gaming experiences without pushing graphics- you totally can. Switch is proof enough of that. But getting better graphics and visual quality does enhance the experience. It’s nice to see, not so much because good look games will look amazing (although that’s nice too), but because games that don’t look good can finally be presentable with a playable framerate.

Now. I’m not a fan of OLED burn in, which is the one downside to this particular screen technology, but there’s no denying the quality of the screens is second to none. And given I never really had problems with Vita’s screen, it should be fine. Given how much I love Switch and would enjoy a higher quality model, the pros definitely outweigh the cons I think. But it is important to acknowledge the cons exist.

Just noticed a Laid-Back Camp game released on switch today. If any of you pick it up let me know how it is.

@JaxonH I was under the impression to get true permanent burn-in, the screen needs to be displaying the image for over a day straight. I don't think that's too likely for portable mode.

@Wavey84 Disney Afternoon collection may have rights issues keeping it from being ported. But if it doesn't or that's resolved it'd be pretty likely. Rare Replay is almost certainly not going to happen.

FragRed

@JaxonH Am I missing something about the latest apparent news on the so called Switch Pro? Are they saying it's just an improved screen for handheld play and 4K when docked? No internal upgrades regarding power, even if just overclocked the CPU/GPU?

link3710

@FragRed They don't know anything about the internals. The news is based on the deal between Samsung and Nintendo. It's entirely possible there's a separate unrevealed deal between NVidia and Nintendo to improve the internals... or not.

FragRed

@link3710 Thanks for that. There are so many rumours going around for this supposed new Switch that I just cant keep up with what's what anymore. I swear journalists and their respected sites keep making these up simply because it's easy clicks as it's been rumoured for each year for the past 4 years.

link3710

@FragRed No problem. FYI, Bloomberg is a major business paper (not a gaming site), and also actively revealed the details on the Switch Lite and silent Mariko revision about a year before they launched.

Though, everyone drew conclusions based on what they said and assumed that Mariko would be a major revision and not a silent one
