@JaxonH Welp - there goes a reason to cancel my Monster Hunter edition of the current Switch then. I've already bought the red Switch last week, taking me up to 3; if the revision is that much more powerful and coming this year then it'll be expensive and I'm going to feel a bit daft with 5 Switches but only wanting to play on one of them. Are you still getting the MH edition?
@gcunit
I’m still getting it, HOWEVER, I’m cancelling my second one. If a new revision is coming then I don’t need two of them. I was going to display one and then use one as a replacement for my current dragon quest model, but if a new revision is coming I’m just going to buy one to display and ride it out until the revision.
That said, you know how the rumor game works. It’s never a guarantee, even when they are rock solid sources. Personally- and I’m not telling you or anyone else what to think here- I’m just sharing my own views of what I think... personally I’m about 50/50.
On the one hand, there’s Nate, who’s been rock solid for quite some time, insisting it’s got DLSS upscaling up as high as 4k. There’s DuskGolem, a ROCK solid leaker who, as his parting gift retiring from the leaking game, said the Pro was real and was definitely coming. We’ve got media reports saying Nintendo is telling devs to get their games 4K ready, and we have multiple media reports of Nintendo looking for better screen technology that draws less power.
That’s the rock solid info we have.
Then, on the other hand, we have more shaky sources. We have someone with a history of overestimating the power of consoles for several generations running now, who also was duped into believing a fake data mine, saying it will be about as powerful as a base level PS4, and that’s without accounting for DLSS. But just because they overestimated in the past and have been gullible on occasions, that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re wrong this time- they are a verified insider after all. Then again, I don’t feel comfortable putting stock into anything they say given their history. It may turn out that they are right in this case, but they’ve proven themselves overly ambitious with estimating power on more than one occasion, and that’s not something I can just turn a blind eye to.
Whether you decide to wait or not is really your call. I can’t tell you what to do because I don’t know- I wish I did! It very well may be that we get a revision next year and despite the credible sources, it’s a marginal bump that only shores up framerates and dynamic res drops. Or, maybe it doesn’t come at all due to production issues and unprecedented sales success, and Nintendo waits a few more years for next gen to implement it. That said, we now have multiple credible sources all pointing toward the same thing. They could be dead on, and we could see exactly what they’re saying is coming by year’s end. Or maybe it comes, but it’s delayed to launch with BotW2 in 2022.
You’ve got to evaluate the risk and make the best decision accordingly.
Which of these two scenarios is more tolerable in your opinion? Go with the one that you feel better about.
1 You buy the MH Switch, then one year later a Switch Pro is released on par with PS4 + DLSS 2 You don’t buy the MH Switch, hoping for a Pro, but it never comes. Now you have neither.

This is what they need all they need honestly. With that being said there is a oh my GOD it’s POWERFUL rumor for every new Nintendo console. In reality we get something not as powerful. Architecture is the name of the game. If they have base ps4 power, better architecture, better CPU, and ram.... they are set for another 3-5 years minimum.
Some folks need to remember that it took Nintendo five years to develop BotW 1, from announcement to launch. Those folks like to assume that BotW 2 development shouldn't take as long because Nintendo might be using the same assets from BotW 1, a la OoC to MM on N64. That's a nice assumption, but I don't believe that's the case with BotW 2.
Everything we know so far suggests it IS the case though. The only trailer used the same assets, and was set in the same world. That's also been confirmed by independent information that said they were below Hyrule Castle in the trailer.
So the only way this doesn't end up being true is if the game just starts in Hyrule and then somehow flashes away to another world for some reason. Maybe a through the looking glass/into the wardrobe type situation. Or maybe Hyrule castle launches into space or something.
I'm overwhelmingly confident it will be the same world though. They'll just make massive changes to it, so there are new towns and new dungeons and all that jazz.
@Dezzy The layout and topography of the world is the only thing that stays the same, and everything in it will be different. That's my impression at least. I'm happy we get to revisit this world, it's by far the biggest Zelda world, and the original one had so much content packed in, and never got boring. And knowing the Zelda team's high aspirations for quality and depth this could be a better game than the original Breath of the Wild.
Sounds way too reasonable for a Nintendo fan but I'll wait as long as they need to get this game. That trailer gave people so much opportunity for speculation, so that's always fun in the meantime. Side note; I loved it when Aonuma said right at the start of his video that he knew we thought he was going to talk about the Breath of the Wild sequel. At least we have Skyward Sword HD to tide us over while they wrap up the sequel.

The main problem with the idea that the word will be the same size, is that they'd really need to use the shrines again. Or at least make new shrines to replace them.
You just can't have a world that big without those major points of interest a regular interval. If they wanted to go back to the traditional dungeons, the world would end up feeling completely empty.
If they do use the same world again, I hope they just make 100 new shrines and put them in new places. It will feel a bit unoriginal after the first game, but I don't see what other choice they have.
@JaxonH Thanks for elaborating a bit on the sources of that. It's the 'as powerful as PS4' bit that (a) would swing it for me, as I don't think I'll be in a rush to get another Switch just for 4k but if it introduces a clear performance divide and more ambitious games that don't run well/at all on the current Switch then it's a different matter; and (b) I am most sceptical about - the fact you stay that bit comes from someone with a history for overestimating rings true right now for me.
@Anti-Matter I don't have 5 (yet). Until last week I only had 2: the Day 1 model, and the 'better battery life' model, which I only bought because I managed to find a great deal on it at a time when I was in the market for a second dock and more joy-cons anyway. But I did buy a third - the 'Mario' red model - last week because I'd been reflecting on my N3DS models and thinking how it would have been nice to pickup more of the variants for long-term keeping/backup. I've got about 7 N3DS models, but they're all just the regular black/white models with changeable plates; plus I have 2 x Pikachu N2DS, because Pikachu, and I saw them going cheap.
I was drawn to the red of the Switch body (hoping someone makes a matching red kickstand) and dock, and figured it would be a limited release that would hold its value if I didn't use it until I had too.
Seeing what happened to the prices for special editions of the N3DSXL if they're kept boxed and new, I figured the Monster Hunter edition of the Switch would be nice to own too, so I do have one on pre-order, which would bring me to 4. Only if a must-have Switch revision was released would I then be up to 5, which would definitely feel gluttonous. I've got half a mind to buy the coral, turquoise, and yellow Switch Lites one day too 😁.
Plus there's the Smash Bros. dock that I'd really quite like in my collection 😂
But if a distinctly more powerful Switch does release as early as this year, leaving all the current models behind, the value of having 4 of the older versions will be somewhat diminished.
And just quickly on Breath of the Wild 2... Just because they haven't given any real updates on it, doesn't mean it's not ready to go, or could be ready to go whenever they want it to. Seems to me quite plain that Nintendo regularly holds back news/releases for strategic reasons.
You guys had me at blood and semen.
What better way to celebrate than firing something out of the pipe?
@gcunit
Wow...! 😲
With so many N3DS, how did you manage your eshop account ?
Because there is 1 3DS game that the Save Data is outside the cartridge, it saved inside the 3DS machine. It was Fantasy Life since the game have DLC.
@Anti-Matter Although I have 7 x N3DS, I only actively use one of them, my original one from 2015, bought new for about £125. So my eshop account just sticks with that model until I'm ready to do a system transfer to another model. Not that I've got many digital 3DS games - most of them that were available physically, I own physically. But I've no qualms about using custom firmware either, so I can copy my games and saves onto as many 3DS systems as I want whenever I like.
All the others were bought 'used' when market interest in the 3DS waned. The best deal I got was a Like New condition of a boxed white N3DS, with a Like New condition boxed copy of Metroid - Samus Returns for a little over £50. Copies of the game were selling for at least £20 at the time. Couldn't say no. But I don't think I paid more than £70 for any of the others, and most were boxed and Like New condition pretty much. I've got well over 200 3DS/DS games in my collection and I want to make sure I've got enough hardware to be able to work my way through all of them. Love the N3DS. But if I sold them all now, I'd also make a decent profit probably, which helps justify getting them all.
@JaxonH Cloud versions would probably be the solution if there is a large jump. Base Switch gets cloud version, more powerful Switch gets native port. So kind of like what is happening with Xbox, Halo Infinite is likely the last 1st party XB1 game but xCloud gets added to XB1 so XB1 owners can play next gen games.
I personally think the Radio Silence on Bayonetta 3 is to do with the Switch Pro. I think the initial trailer suggests split screen multiplayer, which could be quite a performance drain on the standard switch
@gcunit
Well, to be fair, there’s a difference between speculating and actually getting hard info. The person who has over estimated was just speculating before those devices came out. Which is something we all do. This is them saying they actually heard info. Still, equating it to other systems makes me real uneasy because perhaps they did hear hard, legit info, such as “DLSS and 4k” and the took the liberty of associating that with a certain level of power.
That said, I think it’s a pretty safe bet that a system running DLSS for 4K is going to be at least that powerful. After all, the PS4 and Xbox One released in 2013. That’s almost 10 years ago by the time this would release. And I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect a jump to that level, just like Switch in 2017 was a jump to PS3 level which was roughly 10 years prior.
What’s unexpected is the deviation from norms. Usually it’s “wait a full generation, make a clean break, start all over”. Seems, if true, they don’t want to start over from scratch and are finally getting interested in more cutting edge tech. Which, Nintendo themselves said they were exploring more cutting edge tech.
I think they abandoned prioritizing power because it wasn’t getting them anywhere before hand. But now that they found a concept that really seems to resonate and could last for decades, if they stick with it, there’s really nothing else to do but increase the power.
@Dezzy
Who knows. Maybe. Maybe not. I hope so, but if not, it doesn’t really bother me personally. I haven’t really had any issues, and if I do I’ll just send them to them, and they can pay the bill.

I always take rumours and "leaks" with a pinch of salt (I think part of the reason people are disappointed by Directs is that they have certain things in mind as a given from Nintendo, when really they're just based on speculation...)
But aligning a Switch Pro with the release of Breath of the Wild 2 seems reasonable, and would explain why they're holding of showing the game for now. I don't for a second imagine that BotW2 would be a Pro exclusive, but I can see them wanting to use it to showcase extra features.
Ideally I'd like an "Pro" to be somewhat like the Gameboy Color. Just an enhancement to the Switch experience at first, which gradually maybe has a few of its own titles and perhaps becomes the next iteration without instantly leaving all the existing Switch owners behind.
@Wargoose What about the Bayonetta 3 trailer suggests split-screen multiplayer? I'm doubtful that a game that was announced in the first year of the Switch's life is dependent on the extra power of a Switch Pro.
@timleon its just a guess. Bayonetta gets cut clean in two at the end of the trailer, and Kamiya said something along the lines of the trailer contains a lot of clues to the direction of the game. Plus they experimented with multiplayer in Bayonetta 2. So my guess is there will be two Bayonettas, and there will be local multiplayer.
I'm assuming you'll need a Switch Pro to hit 60FPS in local multiplayer.
@Wargoose While I do agree that you'd probably need a Switch Pro for 60 fps in split-screen multiplayer...when that trailer was released in 2017, Platinum would have been targeting the vanilla Switch. I guess they may want the improved performance of a Switch Pro to help sell the game, but I have little doubt in my mind that it will release on the original Switch and that it is the system that they've been primarily targeting.
Every QoL feature you could imagine. It’s all here. Insert tokens, adjust gameplay speed in real time while playing, adjust difficulty, choose level, rewind, multiplayer, online multiplayer, trade single controller back and forth multiplayer, screen zoom, display filters, game manuals, favorite the games you like, save/load anywhere, trophy awards, leaderboards, and putting all the games into one package that just grows with DLC over time.
This is how it’s done.

Very interesting leak. Would make sense if there was a 75-25% split like you said and Id imagine the exclusives will mainly come from Third parties. Nintendo games aren’t generally that power hungry and they could run in an enhanced form on the new version, indies and Retro would be no problem, but it would give third-parties more headroom for getting PS4 games to run. That system is likely to be well supported for another 2 years or so and if Nintendo could make it easy to port across to a new Switch the combination could work.
@electrolite77
Ya, I agree Nintendo would have all their games work across both. It would be more the 3rd parties who'd require a more powerful system.
It's clear Nintendo has learned to value 3rd parties this generation. We know Nintendo approached Bethesda, approached Blizzard, approached all these 3rd party devs because they knew they needed 3rd party support this generation. They listed to Capcom pertaining to their needs as a developer for Monster Hunter Rise.
So Nintendo has pivoted to listening to 3rd party devs. And you have to ask yourself- what do you think all these 3rd party devs are telling Nintendo they want? A more powerful system. With all the 3rd parties supporting Nintendo Switch now, Nintendo has likely heard over and over and over, "we'd like to see a more powerful system- in order to continue bringing games, we need a more powerful system".
And I think they're likely taking that to heart, given their newfound respect for the wants and needs of 3rd parties to ensure they get support.
So all the pieces kind of fit together. I hesitate to buy in all the way, but I really am starting to think this is legit.
But, for now I'm just gonna forget about it, and if it comes it comes. And if not, I'm still having a blast with my Switch as is.
