People are strangely upset/disappointed about that Direct. Happens every time, no matter how long they are or when the last one was. The problem is people expect everything and Nintendo are gonna be holding onto the big games for second half, also I still think they’re getting to grips with he pandemic.

No Zelda anniversary was also something to be expected. Maybe second half of the year but definitely not something I was expecting right now. But I was surprised BOTW 2 got that update. Makes me wonder if it’s been in development trouble due to Covid.

@FragRed People are usually upset because they don't show exactly what they were expecting or ones tailored for them. A lot of the Direct wasn't appealing to me, but there were a few games that I'm glad to see are coming. I was happy with it overall (except the Xenoblade and BOTW2 tolling).

@FragRed Ralizah's been outspoken about it pretty badly. Almost like they took that Direct personally.

I liked it. I wanted a Zelda anniversary thing but knowing Nintendo (who milk Mario till kingdom come), they wouldn't have done it.

Glad for the update though, it tells us it's going well.

@Giancarlothomaz you were right. I had very low expectations. Just wanted something outside the box to be excited about. Something that showed they were serious about extending the lifecycle. Something that showed they were serious about increasing the base. I mean to each their own. Maybe some of you were ecstatic about the direct. Me personally apex is the only game I was okay about and I knew that was coming. This direct for me gets like a 2/10. Horrible after the long wait.

@FragRed I left the direct feeling pretty disappointed. The 3 big games Nintendo announced years ago, no showed. With Zelda being the only one that was even mentioned.

I really enjoyed Splatoon, but I don't think we need a 3rd game so soon. Not when there are so many dormant Nintendo franchises, which haven't seen a release in ages.

On the plus side Mario Golf looked really fun.

Wow.

Not what I was expecting, but... I’m not complaining!

Mario Golf
I screamed when I saw the announcement, and again when it showed off motion controls. I’ve been waiting for this for years. I LOVED Mario Golf World Tour on 3DS, and I LOVED Wii Sports Club Golf. Put the two together and you’ve got me.

Project Triangle Strategy
Basically a spiritual successor to Final Fantasy Tactics in the Octopath Traveler engine, with a serious story focus with different branching outcomes and decisions? It’s perfect. Absolutely perfect.

Pyra/Mythra in Smash
I kinda wanted Rex since 2017 when I was on my XC2 binge, but this works too. Look forward to the amiibo!

Ninja Gaiden Collection
Yes. So much yes. Love Ninja Gaiden. All 3 go handheld hybrid. Gotta love it.

Zelda Skyward Sword HD
There it is. THANK YOU NINTENDO. I want to play this so badly but didn’t want to play on Wii U. New button controls for handheld mode too? Muah!

Zelda Skyward Sword Joycon
Done.

Splatoon 3
At first I thought it was a single player strategy RPG or something like I’d dreamed about. Then I saw the character get on a train and I thought oh wow, it’s just more DLC. A new expansion. Killed my hype instantly. Then I saw the new hub city and I started thinking wait... this looks like a new game to me... and it was!

Splatoon freaking 3 people! What! I love Splatoon so much. I can’t believe they’re actually making a sequel- I expected Splatoon 2 to be it for the rest of this generation. But nope. They seem to be really digging in and making themselves comfy on Switch. Extended lifespan indeed.

Plants vs Zombies
They added an offline mode. Nicely done. I’m actually interested in buying it now, as the game always looked fantastic. I just didn’t like the fact it was online only (or at least, I thought it was). Either way, it’s a definite buy.

Samurai Warriors 5
Awesome. Glad to see it.

Legend of Mana and SaGa Frontier Remastered
Nice to see a remaster for these games. Good stuff.

Famicom Detective Club
I’ve heard about these. No idea if they’re good. If they are, I’m in.

Worlds End Club
All I heard was “from Danganronpa creator”. I’ll keep an eye on reviews.

Monster Hunter Rise Console + Pro Controller
Nice. Hopefully can get an order in and cancel my EU imports to save some $

Misc
Don’t care about Fall Guys, but I’m glad it’s coming. Don’t care about Star Wars either but I’m glad it’s coming. Capcom Arcade releasing today was pretty cool. Tales of the Borderlands is cool, but not my style. No More Heroes 3 release date is cool. Hades physical was expected. Hyrule Warriors DLC was expected. There’s probably some other stuff in there that was neat but if I can’t recall it now then it probably didn’t impress me that much and isn’t that important.

@Wargoose I get what you are saying, but the fact they publicly apologised for the no show of BOTW 2 to me suggests they struggled last year with development and so delayed its reveal and perhaps release. We don’t know how Nintendo are doing internally. May still be getting things on track. Also the big releases are usually saved for holiday.

@Wargoose I'm kinda surprised at a new Splatoon already too. Seems awfully quick, for Nintendo.

@Shadowthrone i hope it's not a shameless 2.5 and has actually new ideas, which usually it's the case if nintendo decides to make a sequel

I’m not gonna lie the direct was a letdown. Nothing in it excited me. Lots of games I’m interested in but nothing bowled me over in enthusiasm. Where was Atlus with SMT dates or Persona? Where was the 2nd Ace Attorney Collection?

@Shadowthrone it’s a 5 year gap, it not releasing on the next console is the shocker.

@FragRed Yeah I think my issue is the games Nintendo are releasing, just aren't appealing to me as much as the games they released in the Wii Era. I think its a combo of the death of AA games, and Nintendo not investing in as many 2nd party games.

Just for reference, my personal highlights on the Wii were

Sin and Punishment 2
The Last Story
Endless Ocean
Pandora's Tower
Excite Truck
Battalion Wars 2
Mario Strikers
Super Paper Mario
House of the Dead Overkill
Dead space Extraction
Another Code
Fragile Dreams
Little King Story
Project Zero 2
Red Steel 2
Madworld
Tatsunoko Vs Capcom

Considering all the delays Breath of the Wild went through, I get the feeling they're holding back on announcing the sequel's release date until closer to its release. I still think a holiday release this year is possible. That would make it a little close to Skyward Sword in July, but given the 35th anniversary of Zelda I don't think it'd be weird for both games to release this year (and yes, they didn't explicitly mention the anniversary but I doubt a Skyward Sword remaster is pure coincidence).

Metroid Prime 4 was a definite no-show. It's only had two years of development by this point, so I don't expect to see it for a while. Stinks for hardcore fans that have been waiting for so long, but at least we know it IS coming.

As for Bayonetta 3? Eh, it's February. Could be another title Nintendo wants to hold until closer to release. I'm not talking two months in advance like a lot of games announced last year, but there's plenty of time left for it to be revealed and still get, say, a Fall 2021 release date.

Overall I thought there were a number of interesting games shown, especially when considering how the pandemic threw a wrench in everything. Obviously everyone has their own preferences so results may vary. That said, it's only February, so it's not like this is Nintendo's entire lineup for the rest of the year. For those that feel shafted, I wouldn't worry too much. Even though we're getting announcements farther in advance compared to those short notice reveals from last year, I doubt Nintendo is willing to show its entire hand at the moment when there is still some level of uncertainty over everything.

Not sure how I feel about World's End Club. Kinda strikes me as a Zanki Zero sort of game: unique, but not really memorable in the way series like Danganronpa and Zero Escape were. Hope I'm wrong.

To be fair, I thought the same thing about Danganronpa when I first played it. I wasn't sure if it was going to be memorable

Not to sound pessimistic but do you really think they would hold back on Botw2 if it releases the same year? If they don't even have a new trailer for the game i doubt there will be anything new this year, otherwise they would have showed it, i am pretty sure. Maybe if they would have released Skyward Sword in March or May... but pretty sure Botw2 can be ruled out for this year.
There is probably another game for the holiday release this year, they got enough in Development after all, maybe its Bayonetta 3 or another Surprise but i would keep my expectations pretty low with Botw2

Wargoose

@PokeMario I think Bayonetta 3, maybe a Switch Pro exclusive. The initial trailer showed Bayonetta being cut in two. I personally think that means split screen co-op, which I'm not sure the standard Switch can do at a steady frame rate.

@LzWinky To be perfectly honest, it was Danganronpa 2 that made me fall in love with the series. If I'd stopped with the first game, it wouldn't have made much of an impact on me.
