@Grumblevolcano I love that you put the 3D world at the top. Although I don't think sunshine or 3d world is the best I think that should go to Odyssey however it's so refreshing to see 3d world being so high on someone's list. So many people say 3d world is nothing special but just a "good" Mario game so Im so glad you are someone who thinks highly of it. I love it and 3D world is so amazing Its fantastic.
This is probably biased on account of nostalgia, but I liked the galaxy games more than oddysey. I did love oddysey, but I think I liked the way galaxy had lots of small galaxies with a couple stars more than oddysey with a few big worlds with lots of moons. I also liked the music much more, the ochestral music was just amazing. I thought all the planet hopping and gravity stuff was so fun.
LOL
I was thinking this is my comparison between 3D Mario games with 3D platformer games on PS3 after i played them.
Sly Cooper Thieves in Time and Trilogy on PS3 > every 3D Mario games.
Ratchet & Clank PS3 games > every 3D Mario games.
3D Mario games are good for me, i still like to play them but i think i have discovered something better than 3D Mario games, something that Nintendo still haven't experienced yet. I wouldn't mind to see Mario goes Secret Agent in kids spionage style games like Sly Cooper or Mario use weapons 101 like Ratchet & Clank style from Mario power ups (For example, turn the Fire Flower into Pyro Blaster, Boomerang into Shuriken Blaster, POW block into Magnum Shotgun, Bell into Ultrasonic Wave shotgun, Invincible Star into Temporary Shield, etc) and Luigi with other characters are involved in the game, not just about Mario all the time.
I’ve always loved 3D World. Up until Odyssey, it was easily my favorite Mario game to date. And in hindsight, after the Odyssey honeymoon period wore off, it may be on equal footing. I suppose I’ll find out when I play it again starting this weekend.
1 Toss Up Between Mario Odyssey / Super Mario 3D World 3 Super Mario World 4 New Super Mario Bros U 5 Toss Up Between Super Mario Galaxy / Super Mario Galaxy 2 (maybe I just need to play more) 7 Super Mario 3D Land 8 Toss Up Between New Super Mario Bros Wii / New Super Mario Bros DS 10 Super Mario Sunshine 11 New Super Mario Bros 2 12 Super Mario 64 13 Super Mario Bros 3 14 Super Mario Bros 15 Toss Up Between Super Mario Bros 2 / Super Mario Bros The Lost Levels 17 Super Mario Land 2 18 Super Mario Land
This isn’t counting Mario Maker 1/2, which is kind of its own thing as a creation tool. The games are amazing, but I don’t feel they fit in a direct comparison.
And keep in mind, Mario 64 was one of the greatest games of all time when it released, and the only reason it’s so low now is because platforming standards have improved over the last couple decades, not because the game was insufficiently designed.
But ya. 3D World rocks. It’s just pure platforming goodness, and I love the linear, 2D style approach in a 3D environment.
I haven't played Galaxy 2, so it'll just be a 2 for 1 with Galaxy 1. And while I have played some of World, some of the original, I haven't played anything before NSMBDS.
As far as 3D Mario goes...
Galaxy = Odyssey = 3D World > 3D Land > 64 > Sunshine.
For 2D Mario games...
NSMBU / Luigi U = NSMBDS > NSMB Wii > NSMB2
@TheJGG
One thing from my experience with Galaxy 1, your multiple of Marios will be always back to 4 or 5 no matter how many Marios have you collected from last time playing.
Sly Cooper Thieves in Time PS3 = Ratchet & Clank A Crack in Time PS3 > Ratchet & Clank 3 Up Your Arsenal > Ratchet & Clank Tools of Destruction PS3 > Sly Cooper 2 Band of Thieves > Super Mario Odyssey >>> Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 >>> 2D Mario games
My ranking would be:
Odyssey > Galaxy > Sunshine > 3D Land > 3D World > 64
Despite 100%ing Galaxy a few times I've actually never played enough of Galaxy 2 to form a solid opinion on it.
Always surprised how the majority of people on these forums seem to favour Galaxy over Odyssey. Galaxy is great, but personally I think Odyssey is the best 3D platformer I've ever played, and has pretty much perfected the collectathon genre.
I'm excited to play 3D World again, but I don't think it holds a candle to the traditional 3D Marios. My issue with the game is the same as Youtuber Caddicarus - it's very much "self-aware that it's a game", whereas I felt that 64, Sunshine, Galaxy and Odyssey are much more able to immerse you in the 3D environments that they create.
I've had my Hori Split Pad Pro for a few months now. I've been satisfied enough to purchase a backup pair, just in case. It sort of reminds me of the relationship I had with the N64 trident. I couldn't stand it, so I sought out alternatives. Ultimately appreciating the Super Pad 64 immensely.
I bought four pairs after trying one for a few months. And used them for as long as I owned an N64.
Maybe the split pad pro will top them as my all-time favorite third party controller?
We're off to a good start.
Switch Physical Collection - 1,536 games (as of December 14th, 2025)
Switch 2 Physical Collection - 4 games (as of December 8th, 2025)
I think it's possible that a lot of the things people are expecting in Animal Crossing New Horizons turn out to be part of a big paid DLC instead of free updates and the March free update is just the Mario 35th anniversary celebration stuff.
@Grumblevolcano But doesn't Mario handle a bit differently in the Switch version of 64, because of the different controller being used? I'd have thought that if you're going to make a drastic revision of your ranking of 64 based on controls, you should judge it how it originally controlled with an N64 controller. 2c.
@Anti-Matter I agree - Nintendo is too conservative with what it does with Mario. He would be great in a humorous stealth game, infiltrating Bowser's Castle to rescue his buddies.
You guys had me at blood and semen.
What better way to celebrate than firing something out of the pipe?
Oh goodness. Now they're making a Nia (Xenoblade 2) 1/7 scale figure and an Ike (Fire Emblem) 1/7 scale figure?
It's like they've discovered my kryptonite and are using it mercilessly.
I don't buy non-amiibo figures... except for Monster Hunter, Fire Emblem and Xenoblade. And, they're just pumping them out. Wasn't Pyra and Mythra enough? Nope. Had to add KOS-MOS. Thought for sure that would be the end of it, but nope. Then they announced Melia from the first game. Now it's Nia from XC2, and they haven't even put Melia up for pre-order yet!
Fire Emblem had Tharja and Cordelia from FE Awakening, then Camilla from Fates, then they announced Lyn from FE7 on GBA, and pre-orders aren't even expired yet and they've already announced Ike.
What makes it feel worse is that I just ordered like 7 of the Monster Hunter creator models in my flurry of Rise hype.
@gcunit Before 3D All Stars the previous systems I played Mario 64 on were Wii and Wii U via VC. Switch pro controller is pretty much a heavier Wii U pro controller with gyro.
@gcunit
I would like to see the differences between Mario and other characters, like Mario is great in sneaking and shooting, Luigi is good in running and stealing, Wario is the Brawn, Toad is the Brain /Hacker, etc. Assuming Mario goes Sly Cooper and have to infiltrate Bowser's secret hideout, it would be funny to see Mario have to hide in cardbox or silent kill the Goombas / Koopas from behind with gadgets or avoiding the lasers through the paths, etc.
And the enemies should be brand new with their criminal records that motivated them to commit in crimes. And for the plot twist, Bowser wasn't really the real culprit at all, it was the new enemy behind all of the trouble. What do you think ?
@Slowdive Did they elaborate on the "something promising" or just leave it vague? I've had the vibe that something was going happen, mostly based on all the weird limited time anniversary stuff.
